1 File Transfer Protocol (FTP) Instructions How to upload your website to the AUI server The FTP client most used for PCs is WS_FTP. It is already downloaded onto your Lab computer desktop, and looks like this: If it s not on your desktop, try looking in All Programs from the start menu for WS_FTP95 OR If you want to download the FTP client to your own computer, in the address bar of your browser type in ftp://its/tools/wsfftp/ Download the FTP utility to your computer.

2 What to do BEFORE you launch the FTP utility Before you start, you need to contact ITS and tell them you need an account on the AUI server. ITS will create an account for you (don t wait till the last minute!) and will you your login and your password. For account creation and login information contact (via ) Mr. Jamal Guendouz at ITS. Ensure that you have developed your website properly. All your site files need to be in one root directory on your N drive ( if you want access to your web site in the lab). Portable flash drives don t seem to work well. Within Dreamweaver (or any other web development software), files are developed with the extension.htm EXCEPT for the index page which must be developedd as home.html When you re all set, launch The FTP utility: You will see this screen: The Session Profile Window will is displayed requesting your credentials in other words, your login information. At this point, you need to do three things: The server IP address is: IP: This addresss accesses a dedicated Web server which allows faculty, students and staff to publish their personal websites. Enter this number into the Host Name/Address field. Leavee the Host Type field as Automatic Detect In the User ID field, enter your login (always your first initial in caps, dot, and your surname e.g.: F.Yourlastname) In the Password field, Enter the password issued to you to you by ITS. 2

3 Once you have entered the requested information, click OK. If you ve done everything properly, you re in. You will now see this screen: Notice, there is a right side and a left side: on the right you can access your local computer and your stored files; on the left is the remote server (the AUI server). In between there are little arrows you use to transfer files from your local computer to the server and back if necessary. ON THE RIGHT Click on MkDir (Make Directory) A dialogue box will appear. Type in www. Now enter. You will have created a subdirectory (folder) on your personal space on the AUI server. Double click to open it. There is nothing in the directory yet, as you have not transferred your files, but the name of the directory (/www) is displayed in the Remote Server address bar. ON THE LEFT On the left, ignore the files and navigate to the drive where you have stored your root directory for your website (N drive). Navigate to your root directory, and double click to open it. You now have access to all its contents. The name of the drive and the path to the directory are displayed in the Local System address bar. ON THE BOTTOM There are 3 radio buttons: ASCII, Binary and Auto. Make sure Binary is selected. 3

4 You will see this screen: Now you are ready to upload your files: From the left side of the FTP client, select all (and only) the files and folders you want to upload to the server. You can make multiple selections by keeping the shift key depressed as you select. With your files and folders selected, click on the bottom arrow in the divide between your Local Computer and the Remote Server to transfer your selection. You can also copy and paste. That s it: your web page is now accessible at (example) 4

5 TROUBLE SHOOTING Before you transfer the files, make SURE you access the correct files in the correct drive on your computer (check the Local System address bar); make SURE you are have created the www subdirectory and have access to it (check the Remote System address bar). If you copy outside the www subdirectory, you WILL NOT find your website online. File names are case sensitive. Get used to naming all your files in lowercase with no spaces between letters and words and no symbols other than the dash or the under _dash like so. If a file will not upload, check to see if you have used caps. The FTP client times out when it remains idle for a minute or so. You can give yourself a bit more time from the advanced tab in the initial Session Properties window. If you are having problems uploading, you may have turned on the Passive Transfer. Go to the bottom tabs in the FTP client, click on Options, from there, select the Session table and disable Passive Transfer. For your home page to load automatically when someone types in your domain name, or for your website to automatically update whenever you make changes, you must name the document home.html (NOT index.html, index.htm OR home.htm). If you ever want to publish another website on your personal account and want to archive the current site, create a www directory on your Local Server, open it as well as the www directory on the Remote Server side. Reverse Transfer. To delete your website, you must delete all your files first, then your folders. Folders with files inside won t delete successfully. You can t access both sites as you only have one account, but you can toggle between the sites by renaming the www subdirectory aaa and creating another www subdirectory for your new website. Whenever you want to re publish your first website, simply invert the subdirectory names. Any questions or problems contact ITS. 5
