LABO BELGIUM Laboratory 1 Identity examines the own unique cutura identity, shares this and through diaogue questions, understands what one can earn about it and from each other. Marijke Seresia, Secretary Genera of the European Counci for Student Affairs (ECSTA). IDENTITY Whether nationa, reigious, ethnica, territoria, economica or other, identity has been the prominent eement and more than often the instigator of serious upheavas in the word. Certain modes of identity can indeed be dangerous. Every time identity is determined on the basis of a singe form of affiiation, danger arises, and peope are ed into fanaticism. There exists an unnecessary paranoid attempt of its preservation which has nothing to do with its constant exporation. It is often presumed that identity is something fixed that you get at birth and anything past that woud be treated as treason. In fact, it is the actua opposite of that: identity is a constant state of evoution. Identity is not a static essence or reaity. It is a substance, a dynamic reaity and therefore constitutes a repertoire. Since it is not a homogenous, continuous, univoca eement, it can ony exist in a dynamic, diaectic ogic of ever-changing difference. As the phiosopher Chares Tayor once stated: What we are can never sove the probem of our condition, because we are aways changing and becoming different. Neither consoidating (in terms of ony one group/ nationaity), nor dropping your identity (in exchange for more consumption) seems a heathy affair. Identity is a constant quest. Every identity impies a diaogue, or: giving up who one is. Confrontation makes identity possibe. Identity gains recognition in the pubic space through forms of cutura mediation and (artistic) expression. This is how we approached and structured this workshop. This is how we understood our engagement towards the other and Europe. LABO Luxembourg 16 LABOuxEmbourg diaogue The artistic fieds of music and dance have been used to express the idea of diaogue. Music and dance have aways been cosey reated with each other and been in a constant diaogue. The pianist Cathy Krier and the dancer and choreographer Gianfranco Ceestino, eaders of the workshop, were confronted with the different eves of diaogues they iked to approach and express with the students of the participating European universities, discovering & exporing the mutipe faces of their personaity. Their aim was to expore the reationship between music and dance, composer and performer, performer and audience. The music of European composers from different periods served as a starting point. Students experienced the musica interpretation of these masterpieces, the deveopment of the choreographic response to the seected music and the effect that the choices made exercise on the pubic. European Citizens are not fairy tae figures. In fact, the sooner we reaize that our European commitments hep our personaity to get rid of its imitations or to move to a higher eve of inteectua and cutura diaogue with other European Citizens, the better for ourseves. I strongy beieve that cutura diversity and diversified cutura expressions are among the most wonderfu and precious treasures of mankind buit up in the Curricuum Vitae of human deveopment and that cutura diversity creates visionary identities, which distinguish one nation or ethnic group from another and makes our word and each individua human being so unique. Cayworks Initiay I thought that the artistic method was very simiar to the scientific one, more than we imagine. I ended the week seeing this thought confirmed. During the workshop I saw as the aternation of a structured process and freedom of movement are the key ingredients for the success of a work, whatever it is. Roberta Travagiati (IT) Cayworks Cayworks Once they asked the participants to produce a scupture of cay under the topic confict. The participants put much effort into it and photographs show that they created wonderfu pieces. However, after the unch break, the artists asked the participants to destroy their pieces of art. Thus the participants got into an inner confict. 64 LABOITALIE LABOfrance 65
