SCHOOL DISTRICT OF MARION COUNTY JOB CLASSIFICATION DESCRIPTION LEVEL/POSITION: COMPUTER NETWORK SPECIALIST 4.78 AREA(S): DATA CENTER OPERATIONS POSITION SUMMARY: The Network Specialist s role is to install, administer, and optimize the network and server infrastructure and related components to achieve high performance of the various organizational applications supported by tuning the network and servers as necessary. This includes ensuring the availability of client/server applications, configuring all new implementations, and developing processes and procedures for ongoing management of the network/server environment. Where applicable, the Network Specialist will assist in overseeing the physical security, integrity, and safety of the data center/server farm and network infrastructure. This employee reports to and is supervised by the assigned administrator. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: NOTE: These examples are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed in a position allocated to this class. Strategy and Planning: Collaborate with team members to create optimal network design topologies and configurations. Work to meet service level agreements. Aid in development of business continuity and disaster recovery plans, and maintain current knowledge of plan executables. Respond to emergency network outages in accordance with business continuity and disaster recovery plans. Prepare and ensure accuracy of documentation, procedure manuals, and help sheets for network installations, including data, voice, and video systems. Develop strategies for client/server implementations. Lead, coordinate and participate in key process improvements as they relate to the client/server and network environment. Collaborate with network analysts, programmer analysts, programmers, and application specialists, and Regional Team Leaders to ensure availability, reliability, and scalability of servers to meet organizational demands. Establish and ensure server security. Page 1 of 5

Acquisition & Deployment Support development and implementation of networking projects and new technology installations. Conduct research on network products, services, protocols, and standards. Design and deploy enterprise-class wireless networks, including access points and related technology components. Conduct research on wireless products, services, protocols, and standards to remain abreast of developments in the industry. Operational Management Provide guidance to members of the team as required. Install, configure, test, maintain, monitor, and troubleshoot end user workstation hardware, software, networked peripheral devices, cabling, and networking hardware and software products. Maintain servers, including e-mail, print, virtual, and backup servers and their associated operating systems and software. Maintain security solutions, anti-virus, and intrusion detection systems. Maintain network hardware and equipment, including switches, hubs, and UPSs. Maintain and enhance remote application deployment. Monitor and test network/server performance and provide network performance statistics and reports. Receive and respond to incoming calls, and/or service requests regarding network/server connectivity problems. Perform on-site analysis, diagnosis, and resolution of complex network/server problems for a variety of end users, and recommend and implement corrective hardware and software solutions, including off-site repair. Recommend, schedule, and perform network/server improvements, upgrades, and repairs. Practice network asset management, including maintenance of network/server component inventory. Prepare, maintain, and adhere to procedures for logging, reporting, and statistically monitoring network data. Liaise with, and provide training and support to, help desk support staff on network issues. Perform server and security audits. Perform system backups and recovery. Monitor WLAN performance and troubleshoot problem areas as needed. Conduct site surveys to determine optimal locations for wireless access points, ensure access point signals overlap, with minimal interference. Page 2 of 5

Ensure WLAN connectivity to all application servers, databases, VoIP equipment, printers, and other network appliances. Check help desk database for entries on server and server resource issues, prioritize and respond to help desk tickets as appropriate. Serve as cornerstone for escalating server issues; provide timely response to escalations. Plan and implement server upgrades, maintenance fixes, and vendorsupplied patches. Monitor and test system performance and provide performance statistics and reports. Create shell scripts as required. Manage enterprise directory services and supporting server infrastructure. Recommend and execute modifications to server environment in order to improve efficiency, reliability, and performance. Administer user accounts, permissions, and access rights. Develop and maintain server documentation. POSITION QUALIFICATIONS Working technical knowledge of network and desktop operating systems. Working technical knowledge of current network hardware, protocols, and standards. Ability to operate network component analyzers, scanners, and testers. Hands-on hardware troubleshooting experience. Advanced knowledge of at least 2 of the following: Linux, Exchange, Systems Center Configuration Manager, Microsoft Server Operating Systems, Citrix, Apache. Knowledge of load balancing and clustering procedures and processes. Experience installing, configuring, and maintaining all manners of server hardware and associated network equipment, including SCSI, RAID, and I/O topology. Experience with server performance tuning and monitoring tools. Experience with TCP/IP and UDP network protocols and operating system configuration. General knowledge of storage technologies such as SAN or NAS, as well as Active Directory/Global Catalogue. Proven ability to configure hubs, switches, and access points. Demonstrated understanding of radio frequencies, TCP/IP, IEEE 802.11 protocols, and electromagnetic interference. Success with site surveys and site design for the purpose of creating efficient and effective WLAN signal overlap. Experience with various operating systems. Experience in WLAN packet analysis, signal optimization, Power over Ethernet, and general wireless connectivity. Solid understanding of wireless vulnerabilities, WLAN-specific security threats, and software weaknesses, as well as mitigation strategies. Page 3 of 5

Activities occur inside and outside. The worker is subject to noise. Utilize hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard, mouse, hand and power tools, and to handle other computer components. Availability for occasional weekend service, after hours support and 24/7 support during emergency and critical time periods. SKILLS & ABILITIES Graduation from a standard high school or the equivalent. Five (5) years experience as a computer technician, cabling technician, or network/server administrator/manager. Degree from an accredited College or University in the field of Information Systems, Computer Science or Information Technologies and/or additional training and/or industry certifications may be substituted in part for experience.
