Certificate III in Health Service Assistance (HLT32507) Nurture your career opportunities in the caring industry by enrolling in a Certificate III in Health Service Assistance Client Patient Services from Sunshine Coast TAFE. This six-month full time program provides training for assistants in nursing in both the acute and long term care settings. You ll acquire knowledge and skills to provide a range of core tasks to clients and patients in a variety of health settings including movement and personal care of patients, food distribution, cleaning and handling of linen and waste. The course also includes a vocational placement, so you can get hands on experience in a real life setting. This qualification covers workers in a range of roles who provide assistance to health professional staff. Health Services Assistance involves the worker indirect client contact under supervision. Program Information: Orientation - students MUST bring the following: Federal Police Clearance, Immunisation status both Hepatitus B and Chickenpox, completed Blue card application, photocopies of your Drivers licence and Medicare card for blue card I.D and current first aid certificate for credit transfer. This program is offered in a combination of face to face (classroom) sessions and flexible learning materials (Students will be required to complete flexible learning materials in their own time according to a set delivery plan). Class room study is 2-3 days per week with students completing basic medical terminology, communication skills, Acute Care skills and tutorials. Teacher and tutor assistance is available during the tutorial sessions. Students must be able to participate in completing the physical nursing tasks of this program. This program includes 40 hours of vocational placement. The vocational placement is unpaid work and maybe within any health care agency within the South East Queensland corner and may include weekend, school holiday or evening placement. Students are expected to have in place strategies to manage family and work commitments in order to meet vocational placement shifts. Mandatory Requirements: Police Check It is mandatory to commence your Australian Federal police Check (AFT check) and Immunisation status prior to orientation. All students are required to undergo a full and comprehensive Australian Federal Police

Check. This must be initiated prior to commencing in the program. Participants will be required to bring the Blue Police Clearance form to Orientation or be able to provide evidence that the process has commenced. www.afp.gov.au/business/national_police_checks. If you have a current AFP check or have commenced your application for one, please bring a copy with you to orientation and hand it to the teacher. Immunisation It is a requirement for students working in the health care industry to provide evidence of their immunisation status. A copy can be obtained from your General Practioner. 'It is mandatory in Qld Health agencies for students to be immunised against Hepatitis B. It is strongly recommended that students are also immunised against Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR Vaccine), Tuberculosis, Varicella Zoster Virus (chickenpox) and Pertussis (Whooping Cough). Queensland Health may restrict or deny access to their facilities to a student who does not meet Queensland Health's Immunisation and infection control requirements.' (Queensland Health Professionals Clinical Placement or Field Work Orientation Package 2006) Please commence Hepatitis B injections (if required) prior to commencing the program. Students who cannot produce evidence of their immunisation status may not be eligible to attend vocational placement. Please bring a copy of your immunisation status with you to Orientation. Blue Card It is now a mandatory requirement for all nursing students to undergo a working with children check to obtain a Blue Card before attending any clinical placement. This requirement will take effect from February 1 2009. For more information visit www.bluecard.qld.gov.au. Please note: Students are unable to attend vocational placement without an AFP check and a Blue Card. Career Prospects: Career options include: Assistant in Nursing, Wardsperson, Patient Services Assistant, Medical Orderly and Allied Health Assistant.

Entry Requirement: You must have successfully completed year 10 (or equivalent), turned 16 or have relevant experience and/or qualifications that indicate likely success in completing the course. You will also need to be able to perform the physical tasks associated with nursing practice and client based activities. Please note that you will need to purchase a white collared shirt and black/navy long pants for the course. Assessment Information: Assessment is undertaken throughout the course both in practical and theory exercises. Assessment is competency based and requires the completion of all projects and assignments written and/or practical as set out within the Unit Study Guides and Workbooks. Written verbal and practical assessments make up the majority of assessments but grooming, hygiene, attendance, general attitude and your application to your studies are also taken into account after.
