Bachelor of Nursing About this course University of South Australia's state-of-the artteaching facilities that replicate hospital and health service settings, provide a great environment for students undertaking practical, experiential learning activities in order to become best standards carers. Level Qualification Number of units Provider Snapshot Undergraduate Bachelor Degree 19 units University of South Australia Overview Open Universities Australia in partnership with the University of South Australia is offering Commonwealth Grant Scheme (CGS) funded places for the Bachelor of Nursing degree. Therefore students admitted to the degree will be eligible for HECS-HELP rather than FEE-HELP. This results in some changes to the application and enrolment process. Successful applicants should note that the Bachelor of Nursing is offered according to the UniSA Academic Calendar and not in OUA s study periods. For further information, please refer to the Application process. The Bachelor of Nursing program provides students with extensive clinical practice and assists them in engaging with contemporary nursing theory, research and evidence for practice. The curriculum is based on identified needs and competencies defined by industry, the University and the nursing profession and students progressively build on knowledge and skills integral to developing the range of Graduate Qualities and professional skills required for competent contemporary nursing practice. UNDERGRADUATE 2
The program is designed to prepare nurses to meet healthcare delivery requirements for the 21st century and respond to Australian and international healthcare priorities and trends. Four integrating themes (safety and quality; population health; cultural competency; evidence based practice) are intertwined throughout the curriculum and represent core approaches that inform contemporary nursing practice. Courses (subjects) provide students with an understanding of the bio-psychosocial determinants of health and illness and integrate the concept of client centred care. Students will develop an understanding of client centred care as applied to the Registered Nurse role while undertaking courses in the areas of child, adult and health of older adults. In addition to the inclusion of a range of theory content, students undertake experiential learning activities within the University and health care delivery settings. These experiential learning activities are designed to assist students to progressively develop the requisite nursing skills for professional practice and include a range of work integrated placements in metropolitan, regional and rural settings. An international placement may be available to high achieving students in the final professional placement course. All courses are supported by a range of experiential learning activities engaging students in problem solving and project activities, including professional placements. The professional placements in this program are designed to enhance students' work integrated learning practices and prepare them for both the immediate and long term demands of Registered Nurse practice. Career Outcomes Nurses make vital contributions to society through a variety of ways including health promotion, education, administration and research. Nurses work in a variety of healthcare settings, including hospitals, aged and rehabilitative care facilities, community services, industrial sites, schools and the homes of individuals. Nurses may also find employment in drug and alcohol treatment centres, prisons and community health and welfare organisations such as the Royal District Nursing Service (RDNS)/Silver chain. Currently there is employment demand for Registered Nurses in Australia. This is happening against a backdrop of Australia`s changing demography and health profile: the ageing population and increased burden of chronic illness creates an even greater need for nurses. These changes in the environment explain the number and variety of opportunities available to graduates. A future in nursing opens the door to many career paths and the possibility to work all over the world. The Bachelor of Nursing also contains pathways for Registered and Enrolled Nurses who have completed pre-registration/enrolment nursing qualifications at the certificate and diploma levels and wish to upgrade to a Bachelors degree. Similarly, a pathway for Bachelor of Midwifery graduates is also included. Professional Recognition Graduates must satisfy the academic requirements for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). The requirements for registration are determined by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia. UNDERGRADUATE 3

Special Requirements Student Registration Student registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia is required in order to study this course. Students who do not meet registration criteria and are refused registration by the Board, or who have their registration rescinded during the course, will be unable to continue in the course. Applicants please note that the registration process will commence following initial enrolment and information will be provided by the University in your offer letter. Police Check To comply with the requirements of the University and placement venues, all students in the Division of Health Sciences who, as part of their program, undertake activities where interaction with patients/the public is required, such as in field or clinical placements/visits and in University clinics and gyms, must demonstrate that they have an Australian police check which will be UNDERGRADUATE 7
current for the duration of that activity. While the University's requirement is for a check once every three years, some venues may require a more recent check. Police checks can take several weeks or up to 3 months to finalise. Students must ensure that they provide the police check to the Clinical Placement Unit (CPU) by the time requested in the CPU notice to students about the placement. Students will not be permitted to attend placement if the police check has not been provided to the CPU in the required time frame and there are no exceptions to this rule. In order to make you eligible for placement, the University will accept the National Criminal History Record Check (NCHRC) conducted by the Department of Communities and Social Inclusion (DCSI, previously known as the Department for Families and Communities). Commencing students and students renewing their police check are encouraged to do so through the NCHRC conducted by DCSI. Interstate Students and Interstate Placements Students completing a placement in a state other than South Australia will require a National Police Certificate. As well as providing the CPU with the NPC, students also need to provide a Consent and Authority to Release form. Interstate students may send a certified copy of the NPC with the completed consent form - CPU address is on the consent form. Additional requirements of aged care organisations as a result of Department of Health and Ageing compliance standards People who have lived in a country other than Australia for any period of time after the age of 16 must provide a statutory declaration stating they were not convicted of murder or sexual assault, and not convicted of and imprisoned for any other form of assault during their time living overseas. Any such criminal record would exclude the person from working within, or being placed within, an aged care service if they have unsupervised access to care recipients. In addition to the statutory declaration (which a Justice of the Peace can assist with) the person must also have a police check to cover the time (after age 16) that they have lived in Australia. Senior First Aid Certificate and Annual CPR Update A Senior First Aid Certificate and an Annual CPR Update are prerequisites for the program. Students will be expected to have successfully completed a recognised Senior First Aid program before they will be permitted to commence these courses. The Senior First Aid certificate is current for 3 years. The CPR update is required every 12 months. Medication Calculation Test 100% competency in an online medication calculation test is required for each clinical placement course. Students do not submit this test to the CPU. Immunisation Record Visit the CPU website for SA Health guidelines or guidelines for home state. UNDERGRADUATE 8
*Part time students will need to update these requirements during their program. Practicum Placements As well as contemporary theory content, students undertake a range of practical learning experiences. They are involved in simulation-based learning in the School's Practice Based Laboratories (PBLs) on campus as well as placements in metropolitan, rural and potentially international healthcare delivery settings. These activities equip students with the necessary nursing skills for professional practice. Clinical placements are undertaken as four full-time blocks and require shift work. Experiential Learning Activity Older Adults Practicum 2 and Experiential Learning Activity Acute Care Practicum 3 are four-week placements and occur in second year. Experiential Learning Activity Extension to Practice Practicum 4 and Experiential Learning Activity Transition to Practice Practicum 5 are eight-week placements and occur in third year. Clinical placements must be completed on a full-time basis. In addition to the placement component, all ELA courses require students to participate in a pre-clinical and post-clinical workshop, some of which will be conducted on campus and others online. The duration of the workshops vary from course to course. For more information please see Due to limited placement availability, it is highly likely that interstate students will be required to attend professional placements in South Australia. It is also highly likely that students will have at least one regional or rural placement in South Australia during their program. Some clinical placements require a current driver s licence and special vaccinations. As nursing places physical and psychological demands on the individual, applicants may need to meet the health requirements of the agencies in which they undertake clinical placements. It is strongly recommended that students meet the vaccination requirements for health professionals prior to commencing the course. Failure to meet vaccination requirements may limit placement opportunities. Students are required to satisfy the standard of dress, behaviour and fitness for practice as prescribed by institutions in which Experiential Learning Activities/field placements are undertaken. UNDERGRADUATE 9

How to Enrol You've done your research, you know what you want to study and you're ready to roll and enrol. Before you take a look at our step-by-step guide to enrolling, there's something we need to remind you about. Whether you have a course in mind or you're still deciding, when you study through OUA you'll always be enrolling in one or more individual units at a time. 1. Add the unit to your Study Cart It all starts on the unit page. Once you've read the information you need to about the unit you're keen on studying, press the ADD TO STUDY CART button on the unit page. If you want to add other units, do that before you move on to Step Go to your Study Cart and register or log in Once you're done with Step 1, you'll have one or more units in your Study Cart. You'll notice that the number next to the little trolley at the very top of the page has changed. Click on that trolley. If you've never studied with OUA before, this is the time to register. If you already have an account, just sign in. 3. Tell us when you want to study On the Study Cart page you'll see a list of units you've selected. Next to each one you'll see some options of when you can study the unit. The next available Study Period or Session will be selected by default. If you want to study it in a different Study Period or Session (and your unit lets you do that) now's the time to choose that option. We'll also ask you to confirm your citizenship status and to check any alerts (things like prerequisite requirements for the unit you've selected). 4. Press the ENROL NOW button Once you're done with Step 3 and all the alerts have disappeared, press the ENROL NOW button at the bottom of the Study Cart page. 5. Fill out the Enrol page information You're almost done. Next we'll get you to fill in your personal details, enter the information the government needs from all higher education students and choose the payment option that suits you best. If you're eligible and would like to apply for FEE-HELP, you can do that at this point. What about CSP units? The enrolment process for CSP units is a little bit different. If you'd like to find out more about applying for a CSP course or enrolling in CSP units, visit our Commonwealth supported place page. UNDERGRADUATE 11
Where we've come from From the very start, long before we were called Open Universities Australia (OUA), and even before the internet became a part of everyday life, our organisation has been all about making education easier to access. A pioneer from the beginning In 1990, the Australian Government established the Open Learning Initiative, a project aimed at extending access to and increasing participation in higher education, examining the potential of communication technologies for education and increasing public awareness of higher education. The initiative launched in 1991 with the Television Open Learning Pilot, investigating the possibility of creating an educational television channel, hosted by Monash University, and supported by a consortium of Australian universities, as well as Australia s public broadcaster, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (the ABC). Although study via television may sound outdated now, it was at the time a pioneering venture (the first time Australian universities had delivered educational content nationally via television) and established a philosophy of innovation that still exists today. Open Learning Australia The launch of the pilot program was followed by the formation of Open Learning Australia in 1993, a publicly funded company with Monash University as its single shareholder. Also under the auspices of the Open Learning Initiative, the Open Learning Electronic Support Service (OLESS) was established in 1994, and Open Net in The goal of Open Net was to provide access to online learning services to all students, regardless of their location. In 1997 the separate strands of the Open Learning Initiative were combined under the umbrella of Open Learning Australia (OLA). Expansion In 1997 seven new shareholder universities gave their backing to OLA: Australian National University, Curtin University of Technology, Griffith University, Macquarie University, RMIT University, the University of Queensland, and the University of South Australia. OLA s entry into the higher education landscape resulted in fewer bureaucratic procedures, more flexible study schedules for students and expansion into new study areas that hadn t previously been available via distance education such as science and art. By 2000, with web presentation and data compression techniques advancing rapidly, OLA had begun to turn many of their courses from paper-based to online. UNDERGRADUATE 12
Open Universities Australia Open Learning Australia became Open Universities Australia in 2004, reflecting the changing demands and expectations of its online students. Although our name changed, our role as pioneers in the online learning movement remained the same. OUA began to incorporate new technologies and interactive multimedia, streaming media, and social media into its higher education offerings. These technologies allowed OUA to further minimise the isolation of online students, as well as harness the learning potential presented by changing technology. Today OUA and its university providers continue to enjoy the benefits that come from the pioneering open learning legacy established more than two decades ago. Since our foundation, OUA has helped nearly half a million students with their education and career goals. Find out more about working with us at our LinkedIn Careers page. Open Access Our goal has always been to make education easier to access. One of the ways we do this is by making many of our undergraduate courses and units available without academic requirements - things like ATARs (Australian Tertiary Admission Ranks, the scores students receive after completing secondary school in Australia) and grade point averages. We refer to these courses and units as open access or open entry (which, by the way, is where our name comes from). How does open entry work? Say you ve got your eye on the Bachelor of Arts (Fine Art) with Curtin University. If you want to study it as an on-campus student there is at least one academic entry requirement standing in your way, even if you re applying as a mature-age student. If you study towards the same degree online through OUA there are no academic entry requirements to hurdle during enrolment. You don t need to worry about your previous study and whether your study schedule will suit your work or family obligations you can shape your timetable to fit your life. After initially missing out on the ATAR score to get her into the university course she had her eye on, Avalon Keft found a new way. That new way was Open Universities Australia, which let her pursue her passion for ancient history and work towards a degree with Macquarie University online. UNDERGRADUATE 13
Student support services OUA offers all our students access to online support, advice and guidance. Whether you need to speak with someone about swapping units, trouble with assignments, clarification on a result or need to talk over some personal issues, our support services team is here to help. Getting advice Just because you re studying online, doesn t mean you re alone. If you have any questions about your study or you re unsure about how it all works, an answer is very often only be a phonecall or away. Student card To help you identify yourself as an OUA student and take advantage of select student discounts, we ll supply you with an OUA student card. Disability support Special Circumstances We understand that students sometimes have to withdraw from a unit due to circumstances beyond their control. If this occurs, you may be able to reduce or avoid financial and academic penalties if you can demonstrate Special Circumstances. Student coaching and counselling service Being an online student can mean juggling family, work, friendships and of course study. Student coaching Student counselling We re committed to providing open and accessible education for all. Our academic providers offer access to a range of options for disability support. Complaints management We take the satisfaction of our students seriously and investigate all formally raised issues through our complaints management. Changing your personal details Most of your details, such as your contact information, can be changed by signing into My Study centre and updating your profile. There are some details that are used for admission, enrolment and government reporting purposes that cannot be changed online. I have definitely felt supported during my studies. Most of the tutors have been really engaging and easy to contact whenever you need advice or to ask a question. I fit in study when I can and work around my schedule. I would definitely recommend OUA to other people. Georgina Scrambler Bachelor of Communication, Griffith University. UNDERGRADUATE 14
