Speaker Biographies 1:00 1:20 PM Welcome Remarks John H. Graham IV, FASAE, CAE President & CEO, ASAE: The Center for Association Leadership JOHN H. GRAHAM IV, FASAE, CAE became the President and Chief Executive Officer of ASAE August 1, 2003. During the first year of his tenure, ASAE and GWSAE completed an historic merger resulting in a new, unified organization. ASAE helps associations and association professionals achieve previously unimaginable levels of performance. ASAE is more than 22,000 association executives and industry partners representing nearly 11,000 organizations, with a budget of $35 million and a staff of 135. Our members manage leading trade associations, individual membership societies, and voluntary organizations across the United States and in 50 countries around the globe, as well as provide products and services to the association community. Before ASAE, he served the American Diabetes Association (ADA) in Alexandria, Virginia for 24 years, the last thirteen as Chief Executive Officer. Prior to becoming CEO, John served the ADA in numerous capacities including Executive Director of the Greater Philadelphia Affiliate, National Director of Affiliate Development, Associate Executive Vice President for Operations and Deputy Executive Vice President. In his tenure as CEO, ADA quadrupled in size, from $50 million to $200 million in annual revenues and successfully moved from 53 independent, separately incorporated affiliate organizations to one nationwide organization with one staff, one budget and one plan. Before joining the American Diabetes Association, John served the Boy Scouts of America for nine years. He has a bachelor s degree from Franklin & Marshall College and serves on the Association Committee of 100, US Chamber of Commerce; Chairman of the Better Business Bureau Wise Giving Alliance Board of Directors; and America s Promise Board of Trustee s. Norman R. Morris, CAE RCE Norman Morris is a native of Shreveport, Louisiana. He received his undergraduate degree from Louisiana Tech University and his MBA from Southeastern Louisiana University. Norman has been active in the political arena and has conducted fundraising campaigns and political support for candidates and non-profit companies such as the Republican Party of Louisiana and the Muscular Dystrophy Association. 1

Norman has over twenty - five years of experience in the trade association arena. Norman also holds the Certified Association Executive Designation from the American Society of Association Executives and recently earned the REALTOR Certified Executive (RCE) designation which is the only professional designation awarded by the National Association of REALTORS designed specifically for REALTOR association executives. Norman presently serves as Senior Vice President of Governmental Affairs for the Louisiana REALTORS. In this capacity, Norman coordinates and staffs the Legislative Divisions of the Louisiana REALTORS. Norman is also responsible for the overall operation and management of the Louisiana REALTORS Political Action Committee and Friends of Louisiana Real Estate Political Action Committee. In 2011, Norman spearheaded the successful Louisiana REALTOR statewide Stay Tax Free Transfer Tax Campaign. In 2012, Norman was awarded the Executive of the Year by the Louisiana Society of Association Executives and he currently serves as Secretary/Treasurer of the Louisiana Society of Association Executives. Norman is married to Sheri Marcus Morris of Metairie and has a twelve year old daughter. 1:20 2:30 PM Advocacy 101: Briefing Michael Graham Mike Graham has fought on Capitol Hill for issues important to organized dentistry for over 18 years serving in various positions in the American Dental Association s (ADA) Washington Office. Currently, he is the ADA s Senior Vice President of Government and Public Affairs, representing over 157,000 ADA dentist members. In total he has over 33 years of government affairs experience in the Federal and state legislative arenas. He has represented two other Associations; served as a gubernatorial appointee for two Maryland governors; worked for a U.S. Senator from Maryland; a Maryland Congressman; and a Maryland state representative. Mike has a Masters Degree in Public Policy from the University of Maryland Baltimore County, and a B.A. from The Catholic University of America. Mike retired as a Commander in the United States Navy, following his service in Iraq. 2:45 3:45 PM Hill Meetings: Using the Power of A Message Matthew R. D va, CAE (Moderator) President and CEO, SOCAP International Since July 2006, Matthew R. D Uva has served as President and Chief Executive Officer of SOCAP International, a professional society representing customer care professionals from leading Fortune 1000 companies from diverse industries such as consumer packaged goods, automotive, retail and direct sales and travel/hospitality, healthcare and financial services. In addition to working closely 2

with the SOCAP Board of Directors to set the strategic direction for the association, Matthew is responsible for the management of the national headquarters operations and staff located in Alexandria, VA. Under Matthew s leadership, SOCAP has been successful in growing its membership, expanding its educational programs, increasing member engagement and raising the association s overall visibility among key industry sectors. Matthew has nearly 20 years of association management experience and was named a Fellow of the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) in 2012. As an active member of ASAE, Matthew currently serves on the ASAE Board of Directors and ASAE Foundation Board of Directors. Matthew holds an MBA from the University of Maryland (College Park) and received his BA degree in International Relations from Tufts University. A native of Waterbury, CT, Matthew and his wife, Amy Neugebauer, currently reside in Bethesda, Maryland with their children. Michelle Mason, FASAE, CAE, CQIA Managing Director, American Society for Quality Michelle Mason is managing director of the American Society for Quality (ASQ). In this role, she concentrates on business development, membership initiatives, innovation, advocacy and enterprise wide process improvement initiatives. Mason serves as a member of the four-person management committee, which leads the organization in the execution of the Society's vision, strategic objectives, business plan and day-to-day operations. Prior to ASQ, Mason served as vice president of strategic and future focused research programs for the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) in Washington, D.C. There she was mentored by global business guru Jim Collins on a groundbreaking research study, 7 Measures of Success: What Remarkable Associations Do that Others Don t. Prior to ASAE, Mason worked for the formerly Chemical Manufacturers Association, now the American Chemistry Council, a global trade association. Mason is a Certified Association Executive (CAE) and a Certified Quality Improvement Associate (CQIA). She is a Fellow of the American Society for Association Executives (ASAE) and an Aspen Institute Ideas Fellow. Mason is a Wisconsin Forward Award examiner with the Wisconsin Center for Performance Excellence. She has an undergraduate degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in Marketing, a MBA and a second master's degree in management with a not-for-profit concentration. She is a trained Six Sigma champion. Mason serves on local and national boards, including, American Society for Association Executives (ASAE) Board of Directors. She was appointed by the Mayor of the City of Milwaukee to serve on the Green Team (Sustainability), where she is vice chair. Mason chairs the ASAE Foundation Innovation Grants Program responsible for awarding $40,000 to support innovation in associations. She recently served as chair of the Wisconsin Society of Association Executives (WSAE) 3

Innovation Summit held in Milwaukee. In her spare time, she is an adjunct professor at Mt. Mary University. Mason has received numerous awards and recognition for her service in associations. She received the 2012 WSAE Association Leadership Award. Paul Pomerantz, FASAE, CAE Chief Executive Officer, American Society of Anesthesiologists Paul Pomerantz is the Chief Executive Officer for the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA). The Society is an educational, research and scientific association with more than 52,000 members organized to raise and maintain the standards of the medical practice of anesthesiology, and improve the care of the patient. In this role, Mr. Pomerantz is charged with helping the Society increase its impact on the anesthesiology specialty for members, their patients and the broader health care community. Mr. Pomerantz has more than two decades of executive experience in the health care association sector. Prior to joining ASA in March 2013, Mr. Pomerantz served as the Executive Director of the Drug Information Association (DIA), an 18,000-member international nonprofit organization for the medical products industry. In this role, Mr. Pomerantz s leadership helped the organization expand globally, establish new content areas and build critical relationships with worldwide health organizations, patients and students. Previously, Mr. Pomerantz has held senior roles at the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, Society of Interventional Radiology, and Clinical Laboratory Management Association, among other health care related industry organizations and higher education institutions. Mr. Pomerantz has served as Chair of the Center for Association Leadership (ASAE) and currently serves as Treasurer of the National Health Council (NHC). Paul Pomerantz received an M.B.A. specializing in Health Administration and a B.A. in Liberal Arts from Temple University in Philadelphia. He is a Certified Association Executive. 3:45 4:45 PM Public Policy: Issues that Affect Associations Jim Clarke, CAE Senior Vice President, Public Policy at ASAE Jim Clarke is Senior Vice President of Public Policy at the ASAE. In this role, Clarke oversees ASAE s Congressional and executive branch policy strategies; ASAE s public policy committee; the grassroots network of association executives supporting the association community in the legislative process; the Power of A public awareness program; as well as the continued development of APAC, the political action committee of ASAE, and the Power of A Fund. Clarke arrived at ASAE after a distinguished career that won him recognition as one of Capitol Hill s top staffers for former U.S. Representative William F. Clinger Jr. (R-PA). As the head of ASAE s 4

public policy department, Clarke strives to educate policy officials about the valuable role associations play in society and how they are improving the economy and society every day. George Constantine Partner, Venable George E. Constantine represents numerous trade and professional associations as a partner in the District of Columbia headquarters office of Venable LLP. Venable, comprised of 500-plus lawyers, is widely regarded as the country s premier law firm in tax-exempt organization representation, particularly in the trade and professional associations arena. George works extensively on tax, governance, and transactional matters for association clients, providing counseling to hundreds of associations and other tax-exempt organizations. George is the 2013-2014 Chair of ASAE s Legal Section Council and he is also ASAE s former staff counsel. George is a frequent author and speaker on legal topics of relevance to the association community. Christie A. Tarantino, FASAE, CAE President and CEO, Association Forum of Chicagoland Christie Tarantino, CAE, president & CEO of Association Forum of Chicagoland works with Association Forum s over 3,700 members, leadership, staff team and business partners to advance the professional practice of association management. Her association background includes leading the 35,000-member Academy of General Dentistry as Executive Director and, prior to joining AGD in 2004, Tarantino was associate vice president, member relations of the Professional Convention Management Association. She began her association career as membership services director at the Alabama State Bar Association in 1993. She has a master's of public administration degree and a bachelor's degree in political science from Auburn University at Montgomery. She earned her Certified Association Executive designation in 2002 and was named an ASAE Fellow in 2013. Tarantino had been an involved member of the Association Forum since October 2000, including stints as a Holiday Showcase Working Group member, CAE Working Group member, Annual Meeting Working Group co-chair and chair of the Membership Development & Services Shared Interest Group. She currently serves as past-chair of the Association Societies Alliance, is Chair of the ASAE Power of A Awards Selection committee, has served on the ASAE CEO Advisory Board and Public Policy Committees in addition to being a DELP Mentor. Tarantino is a Chicago resident and board member of the Partnership to Educate & Advance Kids (PEAK), a charitable organization providing opportunities for at-risk youth. 5
