March 2015 In this issue March Birthdays Resident Spotlight: Ruth S. Extraordinary Impressions National Nutrition Month MM Times MERIDIAN MANOR STAFF...at your service COMMUNITY HAPPENINGS I am fortunate to have a very close circle of friends that have essentially become my family over the years. We enjoy each other s company so much and so often we have joked about living in a commune together! During these discussions, I usually am in the background with a big grin on my face because I know the benefits of communal living as we age I see those benefits in our residents lives every single day. Good Friends make Great Neighbors! The feeling of family is what makes Meridian Manor such a wonderful choice for senior assisted living. Having good friends next door and feeling at home makes every day brighter. You can help Meridian Manor continue to be an outstanding community of good friends and great neighbors. All you have to do is simply spread the news to your friends, former neighbors, school alumni, church members, everyone you know! We have a great referral program that rewards our residents for helping keep Meridian Manor full of great friends and neighbors. Did you know if you share contact information of those you know that may be interested in a move to Meridian Manor we will either give you or the charity of your choice $1000 once they move in and have lived here for 30 days? It s a win-win your good friends become your great neighbors and you or your charity have a little extra in the pocketbook! I would be happy to host a lunch and tour date with you and your friends and share why Meridian Manor is the best choice in senior assisted living in the Wayzata area and beyond! I look forward to meeting your friends and welcoming them into our family! MARCH BIRTHDAYS Sophie K. March 18th Kathrine V. March 30th EXTRAORDINARY IMPRESSIONS Promise #3 We strive to anticipate your needs and act accordingly. Congratulations to our Employee of the Month! Jennifer Fitting, LPN National Nutrition Month Kari Stolz RD, LD Dietitian Consultant The month of March celebrates National Nutrition Month with this year s slogan ~ Bite into a Healthy Lifestyle. National Nutrition Month is an educational campaign, sponsored by The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, which educates and encourages the importance of making wise food choices and developing healthy eating and physical activity habits. Good nutrition and physical activity are key components of good health. Healthy eating is all about variety, moderation, and balance. Maintaining a healthy weight through choosing nutrient-rich foods and engaging in physical activity can help reduce the risk of chronic disease. Whole grains, low-fat dairy, and fruits & vegetables are tasty examples of nutrientrich foods as they are packed with nutrients and low in calories and fat. Choose a variety of foods by choosing a new vegetable to taste each month. Enjoy your favorite indulgences in moderation by reading the recommended serving sizes, and balance your caloric intake with your energy expenditure. Keep in mind that healthy eating is measured over time; what you do in a week is more important than what you do in one day. Combining healthy eating and regular physical activity may improve your quality of life. Information sourced from National Nutrition Month www.eatright.org. 2 MM TIMES

RESIDENT SPOTLIGHT Ruth Shannon Birthdate: October 26 Birthplace: Rochester, NY Spouse: James Number of Children: 1 Son Number of Grandchildren: 2 Great Grandchildren: 3 Ruth grew up in Rochester, New York. Some of her favorite early memories are of family birthday parties, which included cousins and many extended family members. Ruth was working for the Eastman Kodak Company in Rochester when she enlisted with the Navy as a WAVE (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service). Ruth was stationed in New York City. Ruth spent many years as a legal secretary, working for a judge and eventually a senator in Washington, DC. Ruth s son, Peter van Wieren, was born in 1944 and was a famous broadcaster for the Atlanta Braves. From 1976 to 2008, he called the team's television and/or radio broadcasts. Ruth married James P Shannon in 1968. Ruth and James moved to New Mexico, James attended law school and practiced law for a time, then returned to the Twin Cities to serve successively as director of two different philanthropic foundations. RESIDENT COUNCIL The next meeting of the Resident s Council will be held on Wednesday March 11, at 6:30 in the Whistle Stop. Start thinking about activities that you might like to do in the spring! Believe it or not spring will be here before we know it. Are there restaurants you would like to try? Talks you would like to hear, places you would like to go? By the next meeting I hope to have word on the progress of the timing of the Decorating of the common areas at Meridian. Bring your ideas and concerns that you would like me to take to Annie. There are some new staff members so please introduce yourself to them. The meeting is always open to family members. I look forward to seeing you on March 11th. Sincerely, Beverly B. President of the Resident s Council EMERGENCY PENDANTS As a reminder, every resident has an emergency pendant. These pendants allow you to call for help in case you need it. When you press the pendant it sends a message to the nursing department. It is very important to wear your pendant at all times. You may tuck it in your shirt, but it should be on you. You should never leave your pendant on your walker or nightstand. If you happen to fall and your pendant is not on you, you would have no way to alert nursing. Your safety is our number one priority, and we encourage every resident to wear their pendant at all times. MM TIMES 7

A LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR In November of 2014 Meridian Manor s license changed from a Class F Home Care license to a Comprehensive Home Care license. This change resulted from changes the State of MN made to the licensing structure for Assisted Living communities. Per the requirements of the new license, you received notices and documents some of which required your signature. We encourage anyone who has not returned their forms to submit them as quickly as possible so that you are in compliance with the license requirements. As we move through this process you will see additional document changes or disclosures which may require a response or signature on your part, and we thank you in advance for your attentiveness to these communications.
