Happenings December Board Meeting Wednesday, December 5 Commodore s Holiday Party Wednesday December 19 december 2012 COMMODORE S CORNER As we head toward winter holiday parties, I realize my term as Commodore of the Lopez Island Yacht Club is coming to a close. It has been a wonderful year watching our club grow and seeing the members teamwork keep everything on course. Club members have planned events, decorated venues and made sure the place was clean as we left. This past year our club has gained 21 new members, numerous boats have been added to our fleet and long-time members are stepping up to larger vessels. HAPPY NEW YEAR!! Commodore Diana Hancock 468-3871 Vice Commodore Duane Bordvick 468-3152 Rear Commodore Jim Ghinazzi 468-4292 Secretary Julie Duncan 468-2161 Treasurer Judy Welker 468-4007 Trustees Jerry Hancock 468-3871 Dave Welker 468-4007 Membership Chair Gayl Beller 468-2977 July Fourth Float Chair Judy Welker 468-4007 Reciprocal Chair Dave Welker 468-4007 Newsline Editor Shanley Lett 468-3990 As we begin the new year, Duane Bordvick will step on to the bridge as our Commodore. He (and Audrey) will also be stepping up to a 30 foot Ocean Sport that will fly the Lopez Island Yacht Club burgee and Commodore s flag. Speaking of new boats, Dave and Judy Welker have acquired a 32 foot Bayliner, and Russ and Jonelle Johnson are purchasing a 47 foot Beneteau 473 sailboat. Mike and Barbara Morey have purchased a Backcove as a lake boat in Idaho, and Phil and Bonnie Henault will be docking their new 30 foot twin hulled Arrowcat on Lopez. With all these new boats, it sounds like a champagne celebration is in order. Meanwhile, we had what is becoming our normal almost standing room only crowd at the November potluck which was co-hosted by Sam and Gayl Beller and brand new members, Gary Nelson and Betty Drumheller. The food was fabulous, the decorations beautiful. Joe and Judy Thornton entertained the membership with their shared photos and stories of an Alaskan adventure. Thank to all who helped make the evening special. At that November meeting, we also elected our new Board for 2013. In addition to our new Commodore, Duane Bordvick, we will have Jim Ghinazzi as Vice Commodore, Doug Cram as Rear Commodore, Julie Duncan as Secretary, and Sam Beller as treasurer. I will serve as Staff Commodore and Jerry Hancock will be Trustee. Our team will also Continued on page 3

HURRICANE SANDY BREAKS RECORDS And not in a good way. BoatUS, the largest recreational boating organization in the world, estimates 65,000 recreational boats were lost or damaged in the late October super storm. With losses expected to total over $650 million (recreational boats alone), it is the largest single industry loss since recordkeeping began in 1966. Most of the damage was in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut, where the storm surge was so great, some boats tied to floating docks simply lifted off too-short pilings and floated away, still tied to the dock.

COMMODORE S CORNER, continued continue to include the indispensable Newsline editor, Shanley Lett; Web Wench, Judy Welker; Reciprocal Chair, Dave Welker; and Membership Chair, Gayl Beller. Thanks to all these folks for their willingness to take a leadership role and lend their talents to our club. The Commodore s Holiday Party is just around the corner, and the co-hosts, Jim and Shanley Lett and Russ and Jonelle Johnson, are busy planning another special evening to end our club year. The food sounds fabulous, and I hear they have surprises in store for the Commodore. Please join us as we pass the flags to the incoming officers. I have had a grand time as your Commodore, and I thank you all for your support, encouragement and participation. You have made this a fun and memorable year for me, and I hope you enjoyed the party as much as I did. Diana AND THE TIMES, THEY ARE A CHANGIN OR ARE THEY??? With almost 50 new members joining Lopez Island Yacht Club in the last two years alone, Newsline staffers (er, staffer) wanted to know how (or if) our club was evolving. Here s what we found: 2000* 2012 # of members 147 175 # of members from 2000 still in LIYC at 2012 40 # of founding/charter (1978) members still in club in 2012 4 % of power boaters 56% 42% % of sail boaters 17% 21% Some members have both power and sail 2% 1% % of members with no boat, kayaks or inflatables 2% % of those living just part time on Lopez 23% 35% % of those with boats OVER 30 23% 30% More history? Although the club has always been open to both sailboaters and motorboaters, LIYC s founding members (1978) made sailing a requirement for membership. (Within one year, members were asked to sail a figure-eight singlehanded and tell an unbelievable but true sea story.) Also in 1978, 24 countywide sailors entered LIYC s first sailboat race, the Rag Sailors Regatta. As more power boaters joined over the years, the sailing races were dropped. But this past year marked the revival of Lopez sailing prowess with the introduction of the 2012 Lopez Island Classic Yacht Race organized by Russ Johnson. What about speed? Although there were no formal power boat races, back in 2000, Leo and Betty Zaborsky in Speedy Lopez were recognized as the fastest in the fleet. Today? Just opinion, but maybe Doug Cram in Scram or Bill Pugerude in looking for elvis could probably beat the rest of the pack. One more historical tidbit: In 1980, Rod Duncan, then LIYC Vice Commodore, applied to the Army Corps of Engineers for a 150 dock to be located on the southeastern side of Fisherman Bay for use by yacht club members. (Still waiting on that one.) *2000 was the earliest year this data was available

NOVEMBER S GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING DREW ANOTHER BIG CROWD. Special Thanks to Joe and Judy Thornton for presenting an entertaining program and to Hosts Sam and Gayl Beller and Gary Nelson and Betty Drumheller for the beautiful fall decorations. Below left: Doug Cram, Judy Welker, Lori Taylor and Jim Ghinazzi.
