Sir Bill Taylor Futures Centre Our new Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths building is due to open September 2013. The new building will provide 3500 square metres of state-of-the-art laboratory facilities and workshops focusing on Mechanical and Electrical Engineering and specialisms, Maths, Science, Renewable Energies and Nuclear power. Over half of new jobs in the North West are going to require STEM skills - it s a necessity we train our young people in these areas. The Sir Bill Taylor Futures Centre building is the fourth phase of the college s Master Plan to create a world-class campus. Phase one was completed in 2007 with the 8.8 million St Paul s Centre, which houses the two areas of the Sixth Form and Computing. In September 2009, phase two, saw the 14 million University Centre opened and phase three involved the building of the 18.3 million Beacon Centre in December 2011, which houses Creative Arts, Fashion and Textiles, Photography, Childhood Studies, Health and Social Care and Public Services over five floors.

Courses available 17th Edition incorporating Amendment One (3 Days) City & Guilds 2382-12 This three day 17th Edition training course is primarily aimed at practising electricians with relevant experience, domestic electrical installers and other allied professionals e.g. electrical engineers, contracts managers, designers, consultants, surveyors, and other relevant traders needing to update and enhance their understanding of IEE Wiring Regulations. The course is aimed at all electricians who have not achieved the 17th Edition B.S.7671. The course will involve scope of the 17th Edition, object and fundamental principles, definitions, assessment of general characteristics, protection for safety, special installations or locations selection and erection of equipment, inspection and testing and the new Amendment One regulations. 390 per person Award in the Initial Verification and Certification of Electrical Installations City and Guilds 2394 (4 Days) This qualification helps you to develop the knowledge and practical skills needed to professionally design and install or inspect and test electrical installations. You will be able to demonstrate specialist knowledge and skills such as: appropriate legislation, testing installations and issuing safety certificates. Combined 2394/2395 Inspection & Testing course now available (5 days) These qualifications consists of the Award in the Initial Verification & Certification of Electrical Installations City & Guilds 2394 and the Award in the Periodic Inspection, Testing & Certification of Electrical Installations City & Guilds 2395 as stated above. 725 per person Introductory Courses If you want to start out in a specific field of interest then our introduction courses can provide the basic training and knowledge needed to help you develop. Introduction to Plumbing (6 Evenings) Fibre Optic/Communications Cabling City & Guilds 3667 (5 Days) This five day, industry standard qualification is ideal for electricians and wiremen who want to learn how to terminate, joint, test and inspect fibre and copper systems. The qualification offered is the nationally recognised qualification needed for working in the communications industry. The course includes four units which are principles of communications cabling, internal fibre optic cabling, external fibre optic cabling and internal copper cabling. This course has flexible delivery options and delegates can opt for any combination of the four units. The principles of communications cabling is mandatory. 850 per person Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) City & Guilds 2377 (2 Days) This two day course is aimed at operatives who are undertaking and recording the inspection and testing of electrical equipment. Every item of electrical equipment in a commercial environment is required to be PAT tested, to mark that the equipment is safe to be used. This six evenings course is delivered over three hours and is for people who wish to gain an awareness into basic plumbing installation and maintenance tasks. You will acquire a good understanding of hot and cold water supply systems and how a central heating system works, together with practical skills from repairing a leaking tap to draining off radiators etc. On our plumbing course you will be working on a live system real water and real drainage, this way you get to detect and remedy leaks in a real situation. Safety footwear is required. 195 per person
Introduction to Brickwork (6 Evenings) Introduction to Joinery and Carpentry (6 Evenings) This six evenings course is delivered over three hours and will include the theory of brickwork to explain small building regulations, general work place safety, correct PPE that should be worn in construction, setting out of Masonry structures and equipment needed for a tool box. Workshop sessions will familiarise the candidate on using the correct tools for each job, spreading mortar and laying bricks, setting out a brick model and building the model to the correct standards. The model will then be assessed and once confident, candidates will move onto a more difficult model. Candidates can then either continue with brick models or learn other building techniques (i.e. BBQ/Garden wall builds/repairs). Alternatively if a candidate s property requires some remedial work (i.e. pointing or jointing of brickwork or stonework) then the qualified assessor is there to give advice on future projects. Safety footwear required. This six evenings course is delivered over three hours and is for anyone who has good carpentry skills but is lacking that required bit of finesse when it comes to creating and assembling joints then this 6 week hands on evening course will be perfect if you do not require a joinery qualification. All of the training is as per City & Guilds requirements but the assessment aspect is left out. This is a good, solid training course without the need to undergo any formal assessments. Safety footwear is required. Health & Safety Woodworking for Schools This two day course is aimed at employees of Schools who work with woodworking machinery. This course is demand only. Introduction to Portable Appliance Testing (1 Day) e-learning is now available! All courses are completed online in the comfort of your own home or in the workplace! (Please note some courses require attendance at exams or assessment). e-learning courses include: On completion of this course you will know the stages involved in PAT testing, recognise the difference between Class 1 and Class 2 appliances, know what standards are required in order for an appliance to pass each stage of PAT testing, know where to find more information about re-test frequencies and understand the hazards involved in PAT testing and the precautions that should be taken. This course can be used as a stepping stone to give you confidence in achieving the full PAT testing qualification (City and Guilds 2377). Advanced Introduction to Electrical (1 day) This one day course will provide you with the knowledge and practical skills required to undertake domestic wiring. The course will cover Health & Safety, electric shock protection, identifying hazards, fitting plug tops and fitting correct fuses.
