2 SMART Board Set Up Instructions: 1) Check out the SMART Board kit from the WITRC. 2) Install latest SMART Board client from http://smarttech.com/support/software/index.asp (free download) or install from CD and update to the latest version from website. 3) Connect laptop to VGA signal cable 4) To access the network, plug a network cable into the RED network jack under the table. Wireless access is also available from WH3004. 5) To connect laptop to the SMART Board, plug the USB-Extender (in the SMART Board kit) into the laptop and connect the included network cable to it. Then plug the network cable into the ORANGE network jack under the table. 6) Turn the laptop on. AC power is available next to the network jacks. 7) Put the SMART Board tools into the tray. 8) Orient the SMART Board (stand next to the SMART Board and follow these instructions). a. Log in to the laptop. b. Push the mouse/keyboard button at the same time (located on tray). At this point red cross hairs should appear in the upper left corner. c. Using a marker tool, start at the bottom of the cross and draw inwards towards the yellow dot d. When the marker head is directly on the yellow dot, pull marker off of the board. e. 3 SMART Board How-To for PC laptops Notebook Software (by SMART Board) Save notes written on your SMART Board or on your computer as a series of pages. You can open the Notebook software by pressing on the image of the notebook in the floating tool bar. There are three tabs on the right hand side of Notebook Software. o The Page Sorter tab allows you to see a thumbnail image of each page in the Notebook file. o The Gallery tab allows you to see the collections of custom pages, clip art, Macromedia Flash animations and video that you can add to your Notebook file. You can also download additional objects into the library. o The Attachments tab allows you to add hyperlinks to web pages or attachments from other software applications into your file. When you capture an image, it is automatically sent to the Notebook software and will be shown as a page in the file. You can save these files in SMART Board format, open them later, or email them. The files can be opened if the other person has the Notebook Client. (This can be downloaded free at http://smarttech.com/support/software/sb_win.asp ) Word When you open Microsoft Word, you will see the Smart Tool Bar. It has 3 buttons. The left button is the Insert Drawing as Image button. This button inserts any word or drawing created with digital ink into your file. The middle button is the Insert Drawing as Text button. Press this button to insert any letters or numbers as text wherever the cursor is currently located. Power Point Open your PowerPoint file Press Start Show to begin The Tool Bar will appear o Press the right arrow to move forward one slide o Press the left arrow to move backwards one slide o Press the middle button to open a menu. Pick up a pen from the tray to highlight a key point, make a note, or illustrate with a drawing. o Put the pen back to continue with the slideshow o Touch the screen to remove the writing or drawing Inserting notes and drawings o Circle, highlight, draw, write notes on the board. o Put the pen back in the pen tray o Press the middle button on the tool bar to open a menu. o Press Insert Drawing as Image o Image is now inserted into the slide and the presentation can be continued. Ending the presentation can be done at any time. o Press the middle button to open the menu o Press End Show
4 Remember to save the PowerPoint file if you want the notes and drawings you inserted to appear the next time you present. Basics Typing o You may return to your laptop at any time to type in file names or the address of websites. o You can access the onscreen keyboard by pressing the keyboard button on the toolbar or by pressing the keyboard button on the pen tray. Your Finger Is Your Mouse o A press on a SMART Board interactive whiteboard is the same as a click with your mouse. To open an application such as an Internet browser, simply press or double-press the application icon with your finger. You do NOT need to hit the board in order to make it work. All that is needed is a firm press of the finger. Recorder o Record all actions that take place on the SMART Board, such as training or brainstorming processes. o Press the record button on the floating toolbar. (This is the button with a strip of film and a red dot). o A recording tool bar will open that has a record button and a pause button. o When you are ready, press the record button. o When you are finished, press the stop button. Follow the instructions to save the file. o If you wish to view what you recorded, press the video player button. (This is the button with a strip of film and a green arrow). o Follow the instructions Highlighting o Press the Highlighter button in the floating tool bar. o Press and drag your finger over the text to highlight with yellow, semi-transparent digital ink, just as you would with a normal highlighter. o You can cover words or any area of the screen with this illuminating ink. Image Capturing Area Capture o Press the Area Capture button o Press on any corner of the area you wish to capture and, continuing to press, drag the selection box until it surrounds the entire area o Release your press and the selection is captured as a graphic into the Notebook software. Notebook will open automatically. o You must make captures before scrolling or opening a new program or else whatever was written on the board will be lost. Full Screen Capture o Press the Area Capture button o Tap once on the SMART Board o After a pause, a capture of the entire screen appears on a Notebook page. o You must make captures before scrolling or opening a new program or else whatever was written on the board will be lost.
