About Vancouver School Board The Vancouver School Board provides public school education for children living in the city of Vancouver, Canada. It is one of the largest school districts in western Canada. There are 18 secondary schools, 90 elementary schools and 6 adult education centers enrolling approximately 55,000 students in the Vancouver school district. Program Levels: Secondary school: grade 8 to grade 12 (ages 13 to 18 years old) Elementary school: kindergarten to grade 7 (under age 13, must live with a parent) Diploma B.C. Secondary School Graduation School Size 400 to 2000 students Calendar Year September to June Class Size 20 to 30 students per class University Admission Link Credentials earned in the Vancouver school district are recognized worldwide. Students who successfully complete the requirements for Grade 12 graduation have the necessary qualifications to apply to most universities worldwide.

VANCOUVER PUBLIC SCHOOLS There are 18 secondary schools (grades 8 to 12), enrolling approximately 27,000 secondary students. In Vancouver schools, the academic year begins in early September and ends in late June. All schools in the Vancouver public education system are coeducational and no school uniforms are required. Each school has a library, a gymnasium, a cafeteria, a school nurse, and counselors to assist all students in course planning and study skills. There are many extra-curricular activities including photography, sports, drama, concerts, skiing and community service. ACADEMIC STUDY IN VANCOUVER Students may enroll in a wide variety of excellent academic, fine arts, language and computer studies programs. Required courses are: English, social studies, and mathematics; biology, chemistry or physics; and career planning. Some elective courses offered include: History, geography, calculus, law, accounting and business education; Band, strings orchestra, chorus, drama, theatre production, dance, multimedia art, graphic arts, film studies, TV/video production; French, Spanish, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese as a second language; Information technology, design and computer assisted design credit courses; Physical education Students with strong academic achievement may study Advanced Placement courses in calculus, computer studies, science, literature and history at several schools.

International Students Welcomed by Vancouver public schools! The International Education Program of the Vancouver School Board began in 1985. It gives overseas students the opportunity to study with Canadian students in Vancouver s public secondary schools. Local students and international students interact and learn from each other. Also, students may be matched with local host families, who welcome international students into their homes and introduce them to life in Vancouver. INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS The International Program welcomes international students who are 5 to 18 years old to study in the Vancouver public school system Students will be given English language support where necessary Currently there are about 1,300 international students in our 18 high schools, and they compose of approximately 2.4% of our student population. Many of the students successfully enter university and college in North America or abroad. Countries of origin: students come from over 16 countries and districts, including Brazil, China, Germany, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, Vietnam and the United States.

SUPPORT FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS English as a Second Language instruction in all secondary schools facilitates international students to acquire English language skills successfully. An international student counselor within each school provides ongoing support for the students well being and academic performance. Multilingual workers liaise with international students and parents throughout the school district. Peer tutoring is available at some schools. Local peer students (buddy students) receive proper training on their counseling skills and assist other students on their course work. District student excursions are arranged during the school year. International students enjoy the activities organized for them and meet with new friends in the school district. Access to multilingual doctors and dentists in Vancouver city is available. Medical Services Plan: Comprehensive health and accident insurance is mandatory in British Columbia province. Every international student must have this coverage while studying in Vancouver. International students are entitled to medical and hospital benefits through the government Medical Services Plan (M.S.P.). The Vancouver School Board will administer payment of provincial medical insurance premiums for all students enrolled in the International Education Program. Medical insurance privately arranged by parents or recruiters are not accepted.

ORIENTATION Orientation for new international students takes place in the week prior to the start of classes every year. This is compulsory for all students who are new to the program. Students commencing school in September should plan to arrive in Vancouver in mid- August. Students commencing a mid-year program should arrive several days prior to the start of the program. Please check the exact dates with program staff. PROGRAM OPTIONS Secondary school graduation: International students continue their studies at a Vancouver school until they have completed British Columbia high school graduation requirements. Short-term Study: Vancouver School Board offers short-term secondary school study program of 3 months to 1 year that introduce international students to Canadian school life. Students can apply for September, January, February or April intake, and the period of studies must include September or June. Although international students enrolled in the short-term study for 5 months or less normally will not achieve academic credits because a full academic school year cannot be completed, they are fully integrated with Vancouver students. Homestay: In co-operation with Langara College, the Vancouver School Board offers international students aged 13 and over the opportunity to live with a Canadian family while enrolled in a Vancouver public school. Students learn about Canadian culture, lifestyle, customs and expectations. Homestay students are provided with a private bedroom, which include study area, and three meals per day for a reasonable monthly fee. Host parents can also provide custodianship for students, upon request. International Baccalaureate Program: Qualified students entering grade 11 may enter the International Baccalaureate Program at Britannia Secondary School to earn extra graduation credits and obtain university credits while attending secondary school in Vancouver. The admission to the IB Program is made by the committee, on the basis of the student s academic and other achievements. Please inquire if you have a student interested in this program. Summer School: International students may also study with local Vancouver students at summer schools in July and August where a broad range of courses are offered that include English, recreational and cultural activities. Students will also learn about Canadian culture, lifestyle, customs and expectations through daily interactions with their Canadian host families.
