Elective Courses for Graduation-may be grade 10,11,12 electives but must include 3 grade 12 subjects (some students will have more than 28) 10B Major 11A Major 11 B major 12 A Major 12B Major Grade 12 course And/or Other Elective Total Electives must be TOTAL CREDITS 52+28= 80 6
Academics Grade 11 English 11/Communications 11 Math 11-Principles/Math Essentials 11 Bio11, Bio 12*, Chem. 11, Chem. 12*, Physics 11,(Science and Tech 11 may be offered) Socials 11* No Physics 12* until next year 2010 so plan ahead if you want to keep your options open. (* means provincial exam) 7
Academics-Grade 11 continued choose two of the following: Beginners Italian 11 Bio 11 Bio 12 Chemistry 11 Chemistry 12 Comparative Civilization 12 Computer Animation 11 Digital Media 11 English 12 English Literature (needs English 12) French 11 French 12 Geography 12 History 12 Italian11 Pe 11 Pe 12 Physics 11 Psychology 12 Principles of Math 12 8
Note that if Biology 12 is taken in lieu of a science 11 it cannot count as one of the four grade 12 required courses for graduation. At LFAS the four grade 12 courses at a minimum are: two grade 12 major semesters (Major A and Major B), English 12 and one other grade 12 course. 9
Grade 11 Provincial Exams* You have to take Socials 11 provincial exam either on the computer ( E exam) or on paper. 10
Academics Grade 12 Beginners Italian 11 Bio 11 Bio 12 Chemistry 11 Chemistry 12 Comparative Civilization 12 Computer Animation 11 Digital Media 11 English 12 English Literature (needs English 12) French 11 French 12 Geography 12 History 12 Italian 11 Pe 11 Pe 12 Physics 11 Psychology 12 Principles of Math 12 11
Provincially Examinable courses Here at LFAS we offer a number of Provincially Examinable Courses at the grade 12 level. e.g. History 12, Bio 12, Literature 12 etc In grade 12 the provincial examinations are not compulsory except for English 12/Communications 12. So a student can take four Provincially Examinable Courses, only take the English 12 exam and still go to University if they have a high enough average mark. 12
Four Grade 12 Courses to Graduate At minimum it could look like this: English 12 Grade 12 Major first semester Grade 12 Major second semester Psychology 12 (or substitute Choir 12, Tech 12, Computer Animation 12, etc) 13
BUT for University: It must be four provincially examinable courses even if you choose not to take the exam: English 12* Biology 12 Literature 12 History 12 (or substitute Math 12, Physics 12 Chem.12, Geography 12 etc, ) * Must take English 12 provincial exam 1
General Science and Engineering Chem. 11 Physics 11 requirements for University Math 12 (Calculus 12 required at UBC in the Science One program) UBC - one grade 12 science min. (Bi., Chem. or Physics) SFU and UVic - two grade 12 sciences (Bi., Chem., Physics.) 15
Grade 12 provincial exams The English 12 or Communications 12 exam has to be taken. The major Universities (except TWU) do not require the Grade 12 exams and if you do take them, then they will take the higher of the two marks. I.e. course mark or exam mark. However for Sciences at the University level we strongly recommend taking the Grade 12 exams. 16
Math 12 Business, Engineering, Health Science, Integrative Arts and Communication, Computer Science 17
Elective time D1 One elective all year for credits Boot camp 11/12 Film Production and Acting for Film11/12 Fabric and Fibre 11/12 Photography 11/12 18

D2 is added on to your E block major. On Fridays you are in your Graduation Transitions block. This rotates every few weeks. This ends in May with a presentation of all your work to members of the community. 20
Timetable Changes This is a very complicated time consuming and students must think carefully about their course selection as soon as they receive their timetables. Changes will be done: First Semester until September 11 th 2009 Second semester up until February 5 th
General Post Secondary Entrance requirements-depending on the course Kwantlen Polytechnic University- Graduation requirements and C+ or B in English 12 University of the Fraser Valley- Graduation requirements and C+ or B in English 12 Emily Carr- Graduation requirements including 3 provincially examinable courses including English 12 and Grade 12 Art with Art Portfolio and language 11 SFU,UBC, University of Victoria- Four provincially examinable courses including English 12 and a Language 11 22
Apprenticeships and Trades This is a very exciting area to move into and Langley School District has opportunities to start an apprenticeship while you are in school. Kwantlen has a Trades college in Cloverdale Vancouver Community College in Vancouver has an excellent baking apprenticeship amongst many others. 23
Don t know what to do when you leave school 2
If you have less than 80% in English and wish to attend University you must sit the Language Proficiency Exam (LPI) You must also take it if you have English 12 in your second semester. 25
Start at the end of Grade 11 looking at scholarships for post secondary institutions. LFAS website-parent Scholarship Handbook If you have high marks and are very involved in a community /leadership activities then you may wish to apply for the following scholarships. TD Bank Scholarship Loram Award Violet Richardson award Wendy's Achievement Scholarship 26
University Scholarships Generally if you have 95% in your academics the University will offer $000/$5000 for the first year.90% is $2000, 85% $
There are Major Entrance Scholarships for Universities if you have very high marks and you are a leader in the community. You have to keep up your marks each year to continue to receive the award. You must ask the counsellor to put forward your name to the scholarship committee. 28
Qualifying for a Grade 12 Graduation Program Examinations Scholarship A student will receive a $1000 Examinations Scholarship if he or she: meets the basic eligibility requirements achieves at least a B in English 12, achieves 86% or higher on each of his or her three best Grade 12 provincial exams (can include the English 12 provincial exam) Fulfills Graduation requirements 29
Dogwood District/Authority Awards (District Scholarship Program) The Dogwood District/Authority Awards Program rewards graduating students for excellence in their chosen non-academic field(s). These scholarships are intended to assist tuition for furthering students post-secondary education. The Ministry will allocate 3000 awards pro-rated to school districts based on each district s September 30th Grade 12 enrolment. The $1000 award amount will consist of a $500 cheque and a $500 voucher that can be used towards a student s post-secondary education tuition. 30
Passport to Education Passport to Education money is awarded every year to the top students in grades 10 through 12. The Ministry of education allocates a set number of awards to each school. LFAS has to calculate the amounts based on a formula. We per grade per year given in the October after graduation. Grade 10/11 stamp The criteria are based on 2/3 course grades and 1/3 on effort, work habits. A student does not need to be a graduate to receive grade 10 or an 11 stamp. Grade 12 Stamp The criteria are based on 2/3 course grades and 1/3 on Graduation Transition Standards as well as effort work habits etc. Must be a graduate to receive grade 12 stamp. Passport money may be used at a recognized post-secondary institution (BC and elsewhere), which has been approved by the Ministry of Education. Awards have the following value: Grade 10 - $250Grade 11 - $250 Grade 12 - $500 31
Langley and LFAS Awards There are a number of Scholarships that are given to students and are selected on marks and citizenship by the school District. 32
More on Scholarships Go to the LFAS web site and check out the Scholarship Handbook under Graduation 33
Outside of School Courses (Distributed Learning or D.L.) Students are able to take courses through Langley Distance Education, Online or Correspondence. These are free to you. One concern is that your marks may not be included in the scholarship calculations as we do not receive them. Be sure to have confirmation of your mark having completed 75% of the course by April 15th 2009 to the counsellor if you wish it to be calculated as part of the local scholarship mark. 3
