Welcome to National University of Ireland Galway Congratulations on your achievements to date and we are pleased that you have chosen to study Science at NUI Galway. The College of Science has a long-established tradition but is also pursuing an active policy of innovative course development in response to the changing needs of graduate employment. The College now offers 11 different undergraduate degree programmes to approximately 600 first-year students. All students are most welcome and, in particular, we welcome mature students who have chosen to study science. We wish each and every one of you success and hope that you fully partake of the opportunities presented to you both academically and socially during your time at the University. To help you adjust to University life, we have assigned an Adviser to each first year student (see details on your relevant programme page). You are asked to complete the Advisory Scheme Record Form that is enclosed with this Guide and bring it with you on the day of your Advisory Session. Keep the form for presentation to your Adviser whom you must meet personally during the first two to three weeks of term. Should circumstances arise during the year that adversely affect your performance at University, you should arrange to make an appointment to see your dedicated adviser or a member of the College Office team. 1.2 ID Card Collection and Module Registration 1 st September, between 9.30 am and 1.00 pm and 2 nd September between 1.00 pm and 5.00 pm, Registration Office, 1st Floor, Áras Ui Chathail. Please ensure you bring one of the following documents as proof of identity Birth Certificate, Passport or Driver s Licence. Please refer to your Registration Guide for details. You can also receive assistance in completing your module selection at this time if you have not already registered via on-line self-service registration. 1.3 Laboratory Registration Laboratory Registration will take place for the following modules as outlined below. You need to attend one session per module that you are taking. Module Date: Time: Venue: Lab Registration Fee Chemistry Earth and Ocean Sciences Physics 3 rd September (Group 1: CH101) 4 th September (Group 2: CH130) (Group 3: CP102) Group 2: CH120 registration in Semester 2. 3rd or 4 th September 12 noon 1 pm 7 th, 8 th or 9 th September There is no lab registration for Biology. 2 4 pm 1st Year Chemistry Lab 1 3 pm 1st Year Chemistry Lab 10 am 1 pm and 2 5 pm MRI Annex Lab (Ground Floor) 1st Year Physics Lab, Room 224, School of Physics Approximately 50 for two semester practical course (includes manual and on-line teaching software); 15 for one semester practical course (includes manual). 20 Approximately 30 to cover the cost of the manual plus access to the WileyPLUS on-line support system. 1.4 College Advisory Scheme To enable each new student to settle in as soon as possible and to ensure that each new student has access to at least one member of the academic staff throughout his or her first and second years at University, the College has organised an Advisory Scheme. Following the completion of on-line registration, you will be assigned an adviser. You must meet your Adviser personally during the first two to three weeks of term. At this meeting, you must give your Adviser your completed Advisory Scheme Record Form (on page 69). The principal role of your Adviser is to arrange that you receive the help that you may need during your initial years in University. If you find, for example, that you are running into academic or personal problems, or that you are unsure of what is required of you, or if you have queries about the facilities available, you are strongly recommended to make contact with your Adviser at the earliest possible opportunity. He or she will make every effort to either help you directly or will ensure that you are put in contact with the staff members who can best provide the necessary advice. For further convenience, the list of Advisers is also included under your programme information. 1.5 Laboratory Numbers Following the completion of your on-line registration, you will be emailed a laboratory number. This number is used when drawing up timetables for practical classes. 1.6 Clickers The College of Science requires all students to use individual electronic polling devices ( clickers ) during lectures in order to facilitate discussion and engagement. Clickers will be issued to each student at the College Desk during the Advisory Session. Misplaced or lost clickers can be replaced at a cost of 30.00 during the academic year. All clickers must be returned to the College of Science before the end of the academic year. Failure to do so will incur a cost of 30.00. 1.7 Selection of Modules Some of the B.Sc. programmes allow for a choice of modules in First Year. However, the key modules required for the main academic thrust of each programme are defined and are not a matter of choice. At the Advisory Session (1 st September 2015), academic staff will be available to advise you with your selection of modules. Following the Advisory Session, you should officially register for your chosen modules using the on-line self-service Registration Service no later than Friday, 4 th September 2015. It is important that you register correctly for the modules you have chosen. Later in the year, examination papers will only be issued to the students who are correctly registered for the module in question. You should note the time and venue for the first lecture in each of your modules and you should attend for Laboratory Registration at the times indicated in Section 1.3 above. 6 College of Science

Allocation of 2nd Year Pathway/Elective Places In 2 nd Year, there is a capacity limit on the places available in each pathway/elective. Students are allocated their pathways/electives based on their overall 1 st Year results and submitted pathways/ electives preferences for 2 nd Year. Therefore it is a student s overall performance that determines his/her place in the allocation of modules. Students must complete a Module Selection Form on Blackboard in Semester II listing their preferred list of pathways and electives. This Form must be submitted by a given deadline. Students who pass in the Summer Examinations are ranked in order of merit and allocated places within the capacity limits based on their choice combinations and prerequisites. Confirmation on the pathways and electives offered to each student will be emailed individually to students at their NUI Galway email address (usually during the month of July). Students who fail one or more examinations at the Summer Examinations are dealt with after the Autumn repeats and are allocated the remaining places within the capacity limits once their overall mark can be calculated at this stage. Confirmation on the pathways and electives offered to each student will be emailed individually to students at their NUI Galway email address (usually at the beginning of September). Students who submit their Module Selection Form on Blackboard after the submission deadline are dealt with after the on-time students, regardless of their rank in the order of merit. You must complete the module registration in accordance with this instruction. Modules to a total of 60 ECTS Credits must be taken. 4.3 Lecture Timetables A general timetable is outlined on pages 60-63. Detailed timetables for each module containing venue, etc., will be available from discipline offices. 4.4 Examination Timetable The Semester 1 and Semester 2 examination timetable will be made available by the Examinations Office via your CASS account. 4.5 Module and Course Changes Changes for exceptional reasons must be approved by the College of Science Office. 4.6 Examination Entry Module registration also includes Examination Entry. You will not be required to complete another form. The importance of correct registration and module selection is therefore emphasised. 4.7 Examinations 4.7.1 Date The main examination periods are at the end of Semester 1 and Semester 2. 36 College of Science

4.7.2 Autumn Examinations There are Autumn (repeat) examinations in First Science usually held in August. 4.7.3 Time-limit Students must complete the First Science Examination within two academic years of entering their Science programme. 4.7.4 Deferral The College of Science considers applications for the deferral of examinations, where grounds of ill health, bereavement or other circumstances can be established to the satisfaction of the College. If in doubt, please consult with a member of the College of Science Office. Application can be made by contacting the College of Science Office to arrange an appointment and completing a Deferral Form, which is available via the Examinations Office website: http://www.nuigalway.ie/exams/ deferral.html. Deferred examinations are held in the Autumn examination session (August) only. 4.8 Information and Support Services As a student of the College of Science, if you are confused by any aspect of your programme, by the registration requirements or if you are experiencing personal difficulties or any difficulties in your academic programme, you are strongly recommended to seek advice and support from the academic staff, the Dean, the University Offices and the Student Support Services of the University. Timely support may be the key to your success in the programme and to a level of achievement which does you justice. 4.9 Code of Practice for Dealing with Plagiarism When students begin to provide essays or write answers in examinations, they need to be aware of this issue. Definition Plagiarism means presenting the words of another writer as if they were your own. It refers to stealing, without acknowledgement, from any other writer, including fellow students. Copying another student s work is as reprehensible as plagiarising a literary critic. This is a serious matter, and if it is detected in your work it may result in an automatic failure mark. The way to avoid plagiarism is very simple: always put quotation marks around someone else s words, credit them to their source, and discuss in your view their merits. Some examples of plagiarism: Maire and Sean are participating in a study group. The group share ideas, notes and information about their subject. Maire is organising the Science Ball and falling behind in her work. Assignment deadline approaching fast, she asks Sean for his notes. In order to get the assignment in on time, she adopts Sean s notes verbatim (providing two additional sentences of her own) and submits it as her own work. When both students are called in to explain, Maire confesses, and a severe penalty is applied to the work. Paddy consults internet sources as part of his research for his assignment. Not realising that internet plagiarism detection services exist, and are known to his lecturer, Paddy decides to submit an internet essay under his own name. Paddy receives a fail. Siobhan is consulting a secondary source as part of her research for an essay. She forgets to indicate, as she takes her notes, which sections are taken word-for-word from the book she s consulting. When writing her essay, Siobhan realises her mistake. Luckily, she still has time to return to the library to check the source. She checks her source and acknowledges it in her essay, thus avoiding plagiarism. Best Practice to Avoid Plagiarism When making notes, always use quotation marks to distinguish between your own notes and the words of the writer you are reading. Additionally, always keep a record of the page number, publication details, etc. Inform yourself about the submission dates for your written work, and leave yourself time to do the work yourself. When correctly acknowledging the words of another writer, engage with what that writer is saying or arguing, rather than using them as a substitute for your own argument. 5.1 University Scholar Scheme 1. Údarás na hollscoile will confer the title University Scholar on students who obtain the minimum requirement at the relevant examination as specified at 5 below. 5.3 Irish Language Prizes 1. The Examinations for these Prizes will be oral and written. The Examinations will be held in October; due notice of the Examinations will be given. 5.4 Helen M. Moran Scholarship 1. This Scholarship was made possible by a generous donation to the University in 1999 by Mary T. Moran of Boston, MA in memory of her sister, Helen M. Moran, B.S.E., M.Ed., a graduate of Boston State College and Simmons College, Prince School of Retailing. Helen M. Moran had a distinguished 40- year career in education with the Boston Public Schools as an educator and administrator. The Moran parents were from Waterford. 2. There will be one annual scholarship funded by the income from the donation of $40,000. The Scholarship will be awarded to one applicant from one of the following categories: (i) (ii) (iii) A first-year student registered for any of the primary degree courses at National University of Ireland, Galway and who has demonstrated a high level of achievement in Gaelic Football with the potential to become a University representative player A postgraduate student registered for any Master-level postgraduate course at National University of Ireland, Galway and who has demonstrated a high level of achievement in Gaelic Football at University representative level An outstanding graduate registered for the M.Ed. degree course or M.A. degree, by research, in education at National University of Ireland, Galway. 5.5 The Dr James Massey Keegan Scholarship 1. This Scholarship has been founded by James Massey Keegan, M.A., M.B., M.Ch., B.A.O., a graduate of Queen s College and of National University of Ireland, Galway. 2. The value of the Scholarship, originally the interest for one year on 1,143 invested by the Graaff Reinet Board of Executors Limited, in first class mortgage bonds on landed property, is now 1,900. 3. It is offered for competition among Mayo students. 4. The Leaving Certificate Examination of the Department of Education and Science, on the results of which the Scholarship is awarded must be passed as a whole, and must be the Leaving Certificate Examination of the year in which the candidate competes for the Scholarship. The Scholarship will be awarded to the Mayo student whom the Academic Council, having considered the results of these examinations, regards as having obtained first place among the Mayo students whose names appear on the pass list and who have notified the Admissions Office that they are candidates for this Scholarship. 5. The holder of this Scholarship must take out a full course of lectures in National University of Ireland, Galway, leading to a First University Examination in the year in which he/she is awarded the Scholarship. 6. This Scholarship may be held with any other Scholarship. 7. One-half of the Scholarship will be paid in October, one-fourth in January, and one-fourth in April. 8. Intending candidates must give notice to the Admissions Office, National University of Ireland, Galway, on or before 1 st June. 5.6 The Peel Prizes 1. Two Prizes, originally founded by Sir Robert Peel, and now valued at 1,000 each, are offered each year for competition among candidates who are Matriculated students of the National University of Ireland, and who have not obtained in any preceding year credit for a course or a part of a course leading to an Examination in the National University or in any other University. One Prize is offered in English Composition and the other in Geometry. 2. The course for the Examination in Geometry is the Honours Course for the Leaving Certificate Examination. 3. The Examinations will be held in the Michaelmas term. Due notice of the arrangements for these Examinations will be posted on one of the University notice boards. 4. A Peel Prize in Geometry will not be paid unless the successful candidate thereof has taken out a Course in Mathematics. 5.7 The Eli Lilly Chemistry Prize The Prize, valued at 1,000, will be awarded annually to the student who obtains the highest mark in Chemistry in the First Science Examination (including the First Science Examination for the degree of B.Sc. in Biopharmaceutical Chemistry) and who subsequently registers for the Second Science Course in Chemistry in the University. 5.8 Sports Scholarships The University offers a number of sports scholarships to student-athletes of outstanding calibre who register as students of the University. Marks & Standards for all Fulltime Undergraduate Degree Examinations All modules on Level 8 Programmes, whether Yr, 1, 2, 3, 4 are level 8 modules. Exit awards may be made at level 7. 6.1 Introduction These general regulations apply to all fulltime undergraduate degree programmes in the University. Every fulltime undergraduate programme must comply with these regulations unless otherwise provided as per section 6.9 below. Students must also refer to the specific College degree programme regulations and requirements. These regulations are approved by the University s Academic Council and are regulated and reviewed by the Academic Council s Standing Committee, following prior consideration by the Academic Regulations Committee. The Academic Regulations Committee will be comprised of the Registrar and Deputy-President (Chair), Deans of College, another representative from each College and the Director of Adult Education. Relevant administrative staff will be in attendance at the Committee s meetings. The Committee will report to Standing Committee of Academic Council. 6.2 Degree Programme Curricula The University s awards and degree programmes are organized in accordance with the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). Programmes of study are organized into specific units of study called Modules. Each Module is a unit of teaching and learning formally offered within the University, and carrying credit expressed as a number of credit points in accordance with the ECTS. A programme will have a prescribed aggregate credit value in accordance with the Level of Study as set-out in Ireland s National Framework for Qualifications, FETAC. Fulltime undergraduate degree programmes are aligned with Level 8 of the Framework and consist of 3, 4 or more academic years of study. An Academic Year for a fulltime undergraduate degree will have a module load to an aggregate credit value of 60 ECTS. Undergraduate degree programmes at the University are normally organized into Stages delimited by an Academic Year of study. Each Stage (or Programme Year) will have prescribed Learning Outcomes for that Stage or Year and will have an associated aggregate credit value, 60 ECTS. For completion of a Stage (or Programme Year), fulltime students will be required to successfully complete the relevant aggregate credit standard, 60 ECTS. Full-time students will be expected to complete a stage within an academic year. Part-time students may complete a stage over several 50 College of Science

years, accumulating the credits required for each stage in a more flexible credit accumulation structure. For part-time students the University may set a minimum number of credits that must be taken during any given academic year. Students must successfully complete each stage before progressing to a subsequent one. 6.3 Module Descriptions and Weightings Each programme offered by the University will comprise a set of Modules where each module represents a unit of teaching and learning with prescribed Learning Outcomes, and carrying credit expressed as a number of credit points in accordance with the European Credit Transfer System. Module Descriptions will be specified in the University s central Module Repository (or Module Manager System) and will be set-out in the Programme Descriptions and Regulations for each College s programmes. Individual modules will have an ECTS credit weighting of 5 ECTS, or may be expressed in whole multiples of 5 ECTS where good academic practice requires larger units of study. Credit is awarded to students who obtain 40% on a module (see also provisions on compensation at 6.5 below). 6.4 Arrangements for Assessment and Formal Examination The University s standard examination periods are End of semester 1 End of Semester 2 Repeat (of Semester 1 and 2) Examinations (August). The holding of examinations outside of these periods requires the prior approval of the Academic Regulations Committee. Repeat examinations will be held for all programmes and modules unless the prior approval of the Academic Regulations Committee is given. Modules may be assessed in any combination of formal examinations, assignments, projects, essays, papers, reports, presentations & debates, locally-set exercises, laboratory or field-work, or other experiential learning. Where modules are examined by means of a formal examination paper administered by the University s Examinations Office and time-tabled centrally, the examination will be of a standard National University of Ireland Galway 51

two hours duration. Where a module weighting is greater than 5 ECTS, the formal examination may be broken into a number of 2 hour papers or one 2 hour paper and alternate assessment methods (e.g. a 10 credit year-long module might attract two 2 hour examinations). In exceptional circumstances, where robust academic assessment reasons require longer examinations, 3-hour (or longer) examinations may be facilitated. Approval for such arrangements will require the prior approval of the Academic Regulations Committee. 6.5 Passing and Progression The Examination Board is the formal examination authority for each College and examination session. Chaired by the Dean, the Board is made-up of academic staff members of the College and extern examiners from the relevant disciplines, or from the Colleges responsible for multi- College programmes. Only those decisions approved by the Examinations Board will be formally recognized as official University examination results relating to Passing, Progression, Determination of Honours, and Granting of Deferrals. Examination Boards will be held at the end of a Stage, normally Semester 2, and after the repeat examinations in August. The Examination Board will determine the overall result and will apply compensation provisions. Progression Undergraduate degree programmes at the University are normally organized into Stages. Students must successfully complete each stage before progressing to a subsequent one. Full-time Undergraduate Degree Programmes will be organised on an academic year basis, where each year represents a defined Stage. Full-time undergraduate students will be required to register for and present for examination in a set of modules to a total credit weighting of 60 ECTS, in accordance with the programme structures and regulations set-out in the College s Programme Descriptions and Regulations for their chosen programme of study. Provision may be made for Part-time students to complete a stage over several years, accumulating the credits required for each stage in a more flexible credit accumulation structure. Passing The pass mark on all modules is 40%. Where different components of assessment (course work, laboratory work, continuous assessment, final assessment, etc.) within a module contribute to the final grade it shall not normally be a requirement that any one of these components be separately passed. Only an overall mark for the module will be returned. Marks will not be returned for components of a module. 52 College of Science

A mark of Incomplete must be returned to the Examinations Office where there is a requirement that an element(s) of a module be passed and that element(s) is not passed. A student is required to retake all elements of an incomplete module unless the relevant College provides by regulation that students be exempt from retaking specific components. College level provisions should be the same across all programmes and modules in a College. 6.5.1 Carrying Forward Marks A student will be given credit for modules passed and will not have to re-present for examination in any module in which a minimum mark of 40% has been returned within the time-limit set out in regulations for the successful completion of the particular stage. The normal time-limit for carrying forward of marks to subsequent examination sessions is 2 academic years. A College may prescribe a time-limit provision other than the preceding one with the approval of the Academic Regulations Committee. 6.5.2 Material Assessed at Repeat Examinations Marks for components of a module (i.e. sub-module assessment elements) from previous attempt(s) do not carry forward from one assessment to the next unless the relevant College has made provision to exempt student from retaking specific components for academic reasons. Compensation Provision Compensation will only be applied in cases where its application enables the student to pass the Examination as a whole. The pass standard for a Module is 40%. However a student with marks of less than 40% in one or more modules will be deemed to have passed the Stage provided the aggregate mark for all modules of the Stage is at least 40% the mark in every module is 35% or more the module(s) with marks in the range 35-39% total 15 ECTS or less The carrying forward of marks into a particular examination session does not invalidate the potential for compensation provision to be applied in that session. Where a module has been passed by compensation the mark for the module will appear on transcripts with a grade of Pass by Compensation. National University of Ireland Galway 53

In some programmes, Compensation may not be allowed in core or mandatory prescribed modules or groups of modules, as to do so would undermine the achievement of the learning outcomes for the Stage or Programme. These specific regulations will be set-out in the College s Programme Descriptions and Regulations for the relevant degree programmes. 6.5.3 Capping of Examination Marks The marks at a repeat or deferred examination will not be capped unless a cap has been recommended by the University s Examination Security Group. 6.6 Award of Honours Honours are awarded according to the following scheme, for each complete stage of study; that is, for each completed academic year for full-time undergraduate students. Award of Honours for Degree Examinations At degree level, honours will be calculated on the basis of 30% of the aggregate mark obtained at the pre-final stage* Examination and 70% of the aggregate mark obtained at the final stage Examination. The standard will be based upon the following table: H1 70% on the aggregate H2.1 60% on the aggregate H2.2 50% on the aggregate H3 40% on the aggregate * Another year, other than the pre-final year, may be nominated for valid academic reasons with the approval of the Academic Regulations Committee. Pre- Final Stage Examinations Honours will be calculated based upon the following table: H1 70% on the aggregate H2.1 60% on the aggregate H2.2 50% on the aggregate Note (1): Where a module is offered at pass and honours level, a scale for translating marks obtained at the pass level will be used to translate the marks to the equivalent mark at the honours level for the purpose of computing honours. 54 College of Science

Note (2): Honours are awarded only on the aggregate performance at an Examination as a whole. Honours are not awarded on the basis of results obtained in individual modules. Note (3): Credit awarded on the basis of a prior award or on the basis of Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) will be grade neutral and will not be taken into account in the calculation of honours. 6.7 Deferral Provision Application for permission to defer taking a module or modules to a subsequent examination session must be made in accordance with the Deferral Application Procedures of the University. 6.8 Transcripts Student transcripts will include details of all modules for which a mark has been entered. The Degree Honours Standard reported will be based on the grade bands shown in 6 above. The only additional or alternative annotations will be: Exempt Pass by Compensation. Deferred Incomplete Audit 6.9 Dealing with Exceptions or Deviations Only in exceptional circumstances will deviations be permitted from these regulations. A structural deviation is a significant and permanent change to these regulations which might be authorized for one or more programmes. Where a structural deviation is required for sound academic purposes, application must be made to the Academic Regulations Committee of Academic Council s Standing Committee, which shall recommend to Academic Council Standing Committee in the matter of applications received. A concession is the granting of explicit permission by the Standing Committee, following consideration and recommendation by the Academic Regulations Committee, to permit the deviation of a programme of study from these prescribed regulations. The continuous assessment sub-module component has just one sitting (1st Sitting).
