The District supprts a healthy envirnment where children learn and participate in psitive dietary and lifestyle practices. Schls cntribute t the basic health status f children by facilitating learning thrugh the supprt and prmtin f gd nutritin and physical activity. Imprved health ptimizes student perfrmance ptential. The gals f the District's wellness plicy are as fllws: 1. Prvide a cmprehensive learning envirnment fr develping and practicing,lifelng wellness behavirs. The schl envirnment shall prmte healthy schl gals t psitively influence a student's understanding, beliefs, and habits as they relate t gd nutritin and regular physical activity. A healthy schl envirnment shuld nt be sacrificed because f a dependence n revenue frm high added fat, high added sugar, and lw nutrient fds t supprt schl prgrams. 2. Supprt and prmte prper dietary habits cntributing t student's health status and academic perfrmance. All fds available n schl grunds and at schl-spnsred activities during the instructinal day shuld meet r exceed the district nutritin standards. Emphasis shuld be placed n fds that are nutrient dense per calrie. T ensure high quality, nutritius meals, fds shuld be served with cnsideratin tward variety, appeal, taste, safety, and packaging. 3. Prvide pprtunities fr students t engage in physical activity. A quality physical educatin prgram is an essential cmpnent fr all students t learn abut and participate in physical activity. Physical activity shuld be included in a schl's daily educatin prgram frm grades K thrugh 12. Physical activity shuld include regular instructinal physical educatin, c-curricular activities, and recess. 4. The District is cmmitted t imprve academic perfrmance. Advisry Cmmittee A district-wide Nutritin & Physical Activity Advisry Cmmittee, in cnjunctin with the Title fv Advisry Cmmittee, will be established. Student Nutritin Educatin : The District has a K-12 Cmprehensive Health Curriculum. All K-l2 instructinal staff will be encuraged t integrate nutritinal themes int daily lessns when apprpriate. The health benefits f gd nutritin shuld be emphasized. The district nutritin plicy reinfrces nutritin educatin t help students practice these themes in a supprtive schl envirnment. Parent Nutritin Educatin : Nutritin educatin may be prvided in the frms f handuts, pstings n the district website, articles and infrmatin prvided in district r schl newsletters, presentatins that fcus n nutritinal value and healthy lifestyles, and thrugh any ther apprpriate means available fr reaching parents. Staff Nutritin & Phvsical ActivitlEducatin: Nutritin and physical activity educatin pprtunities will be prvided t all staff as needed. These educatinal pprtunities may include, but nt be limited t, the distributin f educatinal and infrmatinal materials and the arangement f presentatins and wrkshps that fcus n nutritinal and healthy lifestyles, health assessments, fitness activities, and ther apprpriate nutritin and physical activityrelated tpics. 4. District Nutritin Guidelines The District encurages the sale r distributin f nutrient dense fds dunng and prir t the instructinal schl day. Nutrient dense fds are thse fds that prvide students with calries rich in the nutrient cntent needed t be healthy. In an effrt t supprt the cnsumptin f nutrient dense fds in the schl setting, the district has adpted the fllwing nutritin standards gverning the sale f fd and beverage items n schl grunds prir t and during the instructinal schl day. Any given fd item fr sale prir t the start f the schl day and thrughut the instructinal day, will have n mre than 30% f its ttal calries derived frm fat.. Any given fd item fr sale prir t the start f the schl day and thrughut the instructinal day, will generally have n mre than 10% f its ttal calries derived frm saturated fat. Nuts and seeds with minimal added fat in prcessing (n mre than 3 grams f, added fat per 1.75 unce r less package size) are exempt frm these standards because they are nutrient dense and cntain high levels f mnunsaturated fat. 5. Student Physical Activity District Phvsical Activity Gal: The District shall prvide physical activity and physical educatin pprtunities that prvide students with the knwledge and skills t lead a physically active lifestyle.
