LIVING IN AUSTRALIA Miguel Cordero Residence, Sydney Photo: Semester in Australia ACU English Language Centres are situated across three cities. There are various housing options available to suit different lifestyles and budgets. Housing options include: HOMESTAY Homestay accommodation gives you the opportunity to live with a local family while studying in Australia. It is available from a few weeks to many months. By living with an Australian family, you will get a better understanding of Australian life. www.homestaynetwork.org/public STUDENT ACCOMMODATION Specialised student apartment accommodation is available near most ACU campuses. With this kind of accommodation, the fees you pay usually cover utility bills and, in many cases, Wi-Fi access. Semester in Australia Semester in Australia is a provider of student accommodation. For more information please visit: www.semesterinaustralia.com RENTAL ACCOMMODATION (SHARED AND PRIVATE) Temporary housing You may like to book short-term accommodation for your arrival in Australia, particularly for the first one or two weeks. This option provides you with housing on arrival and gives you the opportunity to search for permanent accommodation once you have settled in. www.acu.edu.au/int_accom Private/shared housing You should budget approximately A$150-$300 per week to rent a property shared with others. Utilities and food are not included in this estimate. Rental prices vary depending on location. You may choose to live in private rental accommodation near your campus or in the city, depending on your budget. We do not recommend securing private or shared housing before arriving in Australia as it is best to view each property in person. www.acu.edu.au/int_accom ACU STUDENT ACCOMMODATION ACU student accommodation is available in Sydney for students who wish to stay for 6 or 12 months. The Miguel Cordero Residence is located in the student hub of Camperdown, which is very close to Sydney s city centre. It offers an enriching university experience and the chance to make lifelong friendships. This residence features furnished apartments in a secure building, communal lounges, study spaces and an atrium meeting place, public transport access to North Sydney campus, onsite management team and high-speed internet. www.acu.edu.au/490012 Please note: reference to any specific company or services is for the information and convenience of students/visitors and does not constitute endorsement, recommendation or favouring by ACU. LIVING COSTS COST PER WEEK Accommodation $150-300+ Food $60-100+ Transport $15-40+ Extras $50-80+ Total $275-520/week All costs are in Australian dollars and can vary greatly depending on location. They are a guide only. One of the biggest challenges when moving to study in a new country is managing a budget. You can reduce your living costs by: sharing accommodation and meals with other students avoiding suburbs that are close to the CBD or the beach shopping carefully. Rent is based on sharing a privately rented house. Initial expenses for the first few weeks for temporary accommodation will be higher than those listed in the table, until students find suitable permanent accommodation. www.acu.edu.au/int_living_costs OVERSEAS STUDENT HEALTH COVER The Australian government requires all international student visa holders and their dependants to obtain health insurance for the duration of their visas. If you are not a student visa holder, you do not need Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC). www.acu.edu.au/453135 Please note: OSHC will not cover any preexisting conditions (i.e. those which existed within 18 months before the student began study). The university s preferred OSHC provider is Allianz Global Assistance: www.oshcallianzassistance.com.au VISAS You must have a valid visa to enter and study in Australia. You may use a Visitor s Visa to undertake up to 12 weeks of study. A Working Holiday Visa or Work and Holiday Visa will allow you to study up to 16 weeks. If you intend to study for a longer period, you will need a student visa. For more information on how to apply and what visa types might be suitable for you, please contact your nearest Consulate, Australian Embassy or High Commission which you can find at www.immi.gov.au EMPLOYMENT Under Australian immigration regulations, international students with a student visa may work up to 40 hours per fortnight during the term time and full-time during holiday breaks. If you are not a student visa holder you should check the conditions of your visa to see whether you are permitted to work.
