Digital 5 Each student will receive their own personal Think Pad laptop for the year that will have all their academic textbooks and digital lessons. Homework, assessments, projects, parent teacher communication, and peer to peer communication will be through the use of the laptops. We will be using a program similar to Facebook called Schoology. Schoology will allow students and parents to see updates and announcements from the teacher. This is going to be our primary source of daily communication. The amount of papers coming home in red folders will decrease as the year progresses. Laptops will not be going home until student have master the use of of these Think Pad laptops.

LAFS & Words Their Way LAFS is a workbook that is used daily in a teacher center. The workbook is focused on Florida State Standards. The workbook is rigorous and includes multiple ways of answering questions. Such as multiple response, short response, extended response, graphic organizers, multiple selection answer, and across curriculum text. It also includes excerpts from informational text and literature pieces including poetry. Words Their Way is a phonics, spelling, and vocabulary instruction through daily word study. One focus of word study is to teach children how to spell and decode new words and to improve their word recognition in general. This center is differentiated based on the inventory test they have already taken.

Social Studies/Science We are con9nuing to use the Science and Social Studies textbooks from County Adop9on. Both of the textbooks are interac9ve and challenge your children with interac9ve reading ac9vi9es on every page. We are infusing Science and Social Studies in the Integrated Reading Block.

Science Curriculum Fusion Series with New Generation Standards Enhanced and Supported with Hands-on experimental kits Science lab materials Digital Science Labs Interactive textbook pages Science journals Interactive Vocabulary Glossaries and Videos We do not go page-to-page in the text. Junior Achievement We will be going to JA Biztown which is a place where students can experience the adult working world. Students will have the opportunity to run or work in a business. They will be given job titles such as CEO, CFO, Town Mayor, Bank Teller, Sales Associate, Newscaster, and Radio Host just to name a few. Students will learn the basics of our countries financial structure as well as how to open and maintain a bank account. Students will master how to write a check, fill out a register, deposit funds, and use of a ATM bank card. During the day students will work a real business day. They will have two breaks. One will be for lunch and the other can be for shopping in the other stores. There are over 25 businesses to keep the students engaged. We will be asking for parent volunteers for this trip. The date is Wednesday, May 11th.

School-to-Home Connection Make essential reading practice more effective for every student. Personalize reading practice to each student s current level. Manage all reading activities including read to, read with, and independent reading. Assess students reading with four types of quizzes: Reading Practice, Vocabulary Practice, Literacy Skills, and Textbook Quizzes. Build a lifelong love of reading and learning. With the new Home Connect, we can link the school and home to make reading practice even more effective. By logging on from your home computer students and parents can: See progress toward reading goals. Conduct book searches. Review quiz results. View number of books read, words read, and quizzes passed. And much, much more. Your student s school number to login to Home Connect is located in their student planner. The password is 0491.

Reading Programs The Sunshine State Young Reader s Award (SSYRA) program is a statewide reading motivation program for intermediate students, which encourages students to read independently for personal satisfaction, based on interest rather than reading level. BOOK IT! is a reading incentive program which runs from October to March each year. The students and teacher will set monthly goals. As soon as the goals are met, students are presented with a pizza award certificate.

Sunshine State Young Reader Award Books Found in our Media Center (The books change year to year so check in the Media Center for a current list)

Home & School Correlation Research provides convincing evidence that parents are an important influence in helping their children achieve high academic standards. Red folder review class assignments Check your child s daily planner. Keyboarding homework skills should be worked on nightly! Students should write from stories that they have read citing evidence from the text. This could also be done as a family with newspapers and magazines citing from articles. Hands-on Activities - cooking for math and science - grocery shopping

Homework Policy Homework is important to each student s educational experience: Reinforce skills taught in the classroom Provide the student with an opportunity for independent practice Study classroom materials Explore and master skills more thoroughly than class time allows Homework encourages the development of responsibility, self-discipline, and personal study skills. Textbooks are available on line and through Beep through Schoology Homework will be given Monday through Thursday. Approximately 50 minutes each evening School board policy 10 minutes per grade level Generally in Reading, Math, and Science Make-up Work - For every absence the student is allowed 2 school days

Your assistance is always appreciated. You will need to complete the volunteer registration online, unless you volunteered 4 or more hours last year. Then the approval carried over! This can be done at home or in the media center. You will need your driver s license. It takes about a week to be processed. Please check with Mrs. Georgion or Ms. Stephanie in the office for your clearance. www.getinvolvedineducation.com/parents HSA has a wonderful, user friendly website for parents to volunteer and help with Harbordale activities: http://www.harbordalehsa.com/

More information is available on the Harbordale website. Thanks for coming!
