3 The Transition Into Fourth Grade Amazing energy and enthusiasm, increased anxiety, and tougher academic demands-all these make fourth grade a pivotal year. Industrious and curious, fourth graders are ready and eager for new knowledge. Yet, they are still concrete thinkers. Fourth graders are expected to have made the shift from "learning to read" to "reading to learn." However, we have a variety of abilities in our classroom and it is my job as a teacher to differentiate to help each child reach his or her full potential. Fourth graders face an increased homework load and more traditional instruction practices, such as letter grades, larger class size, and a longer school day.

4 How I Ease the Transition & Develop Scholars Have clear expectations and make no assumptions Establish consistent, clear routines so students can navigate their environment Marvelous Mistakes: Allow lots of time for practice and accept mistakes as opportunities to learn Alternate quiet times with time for more active participation Promote conversation Practice persistence and real-life problem solving

5 Classroom Management Champs Incentives: Pride tickets, Class points, Reward Recess Classroom Rules: We created them together, posted up front. I expect that they cooperate fully with the class and school rules and I appreciate your support at home. Behavior Chart: Green, Yellow, Orange, Red (loss of a recess, reflections) parent contact

6 Classroom Organization Keeping desks organized The homework folder and communicator Wednesday Work Envelope ( needs to be signed and returned by Friday) may include tests that need a to be signed and returned. Our classroom library Classroom website

7 Homework Daily Homework Assignments: Written in Agenda each morning, minutes per night plus reading. Information is posted on website. If they do not have homework completed and ready to turn in they will lose recess to complete it. There will also be a 10% deduction for late homework.

13 Curriculum Language Arts: Comprehension and Vocabulary of Fiction and Non-fiction. Daily Five and CAFE methods. Close reading strategies Writing Workshop: Narrative, Informative/ Expository, Opinion. They will learn to support with facts and details
