2 Why a Math Program? Math Shifts- Focus, Coherence, Rigor, Deep Understanding, Application, Dual Intensity Will provide consistency and common teaching methods within and across grade levels Supervision and evaluation of a program will be more efficient A math program will be a tool in which staff is able to teach our current curriculum Researched: Math Expressions Investigations envisions Math in Focus
3 Timeline Summer : Joined ACES Consortium School Year: Visit to Trumbull to see Math Investigations, Meetings with BOWA Districts to discuss programs, then began research. September-October: Visits to Montowese Elementary School in North Haven to see Math in Focus and Peck Place School in Orange to see Math Expressions October: 3 rd and 4 th Grade Teachers begin to use Math Expressions materials October 9, 2013: BOE Curriculum Committee Meeting to discuss Math Programs (Math Expressions, envisions, Math in Focus, Investigations). January 10, 2014: BOE Curriculum Committee Meeting to discussion top two math programs (Math in Focus and Math Expressions) Ongoing: Phone calls with school districts using Math Expressions and Math in Focus to get feedback- Strengths/Challenges Ongoing: meeting with Houghton Mifflin Representatives regarding Math Expressions and Math in Focus
