Best Practices for Helping All Students Get Ready for the SAT Prepared for Idaho SDE January 2014
SAT Readiness Program Agenda: SAT Introduction SAT Preparation The Official SAT Online Course PSAT Participation
Mission The College Board s mission is to ensure that every student has the opportunity to prepare for, enroll in and graduate from college.
Introduction The SAT is the nation s most widely used college entrance examination. Colleges use SAT scores: As one of several factors to make admission decisions As a check against grade inflation and variation in high school programs For class placement and scholarship opportunities
What the SAT Measures The SAT measures what you know and how well you apply that knowledge. It tests the same things taught every day in high school classrooms: reading, writing and math. SAT questions represent high school curricula, testing skills in geometry, algebra, grammar and critical reading. Teachers and educators review every SAT question for relevance and coherence. The critical thinking skills that the SAT tests are 21st-century skills that will help you succeed in college.
Test Details Three sections: critical reading, mathematics and writing Length: 3 hours, 45 minutes (including three breaks) Score range: per section, overall Question types: Critical Reading Sentence Completions, Reading Passages Mathematics Number and Operations, Algebra, Geometry, Statistics and Probability Writing Essay, Identifying Errors, Improving Grammar and Usage
Getting Ready for the SAT Select challenging high school courses. Read widely and write extensively, both in and out of school. Take the PSAT/NMSQT as a sophomore or junior. 24 Classroom Integration Implementation There are three different ways to teachers can integrate the SAT Online Course into their classrooms: homework, quizzes, and classroom activities. SAT Online Course includes content areas and/ or skills that are taught in school math, reading, and writing Deliver lessons, quizzes, and/ or work through questions related to content areas and/ or skills being focused on in the classroom All tests and quizzes including essays are automatically scored and teachers have access to the right answers and explanations for all questions in the SAT Online Course 8
Independent Study Implementation While the SAT Online Course can used by students for independent study without any teacher support or structure, we recommend that schools establish some structure for independent study but allow students to opt in voluntarily. The SAT Online Course Lunch Program Staff a computer lab during the lunch hour with one ELA and one Math teacher Monday Friday that are trained on how to use the SAT Online Course (College Board/ GA DOE will provide training we recommend having 2 4 teachers in total half ELA and half Math) Allow interested students to spend their lunch hour using the SAT Online Course, receiving support and assignments to complete on their own time Class sizes should be limited to no more than 25 students It helps if the students are allowed to bring their lunch The Official SAT Question of the Day Contest Post a link to the Official SAT Question of the Day on the school website daily Encourage students to go on the site, review and answer the question, write down their answer, and turn it in at a centrally located suggestion box The criteria for winning is participation. Students can win whether they got the question right or wrong Weekly pull one female and one male winner from the box and present them with a prize Every student that signs-up should be required to complete one full SAT practice test before coming to their first session 9
