About the Coalition Against Child Abuse & Neglect (CCAN) Since its founding in 1979, CCAN has been a center for child abuse prevention and child victim advocacy. As a voice for all children on Long Island, CCAN advocates for enhanced prevention, intervention and treatment services and policies for abused and neglected children. In an effort to fill in service gaps, CCAN provides direct services to assist child victims and their families recover from their traumatic experiences. CCAN is a leading provider of professional and community training on child abuse recognition, response and prevention. Among its programs and services are: Child Advocacy Center of Nassau County: The Coalition works with other agencies to reduce the trauma of child abuse victims through a single interview process, to enhance timely treatment and service delivery to children, and to ensure more effective case investigation and increased offender prosecution. Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) Case Coordination: Through the Child Abuse Coordination and Treatment Team, MDT enhances communication among professionals involved in cases of suspected child abuse. Child Victim Advocate Program: An advocate helps the child or non-offending parent negotiate the court system, health system and in accessing other support services. Project Kidz Talk : a peer support and mutual aid group for child victims of sexual abuse and their siblings. Education/Training: This educational service provides technical support and training for professionals and the community, advancing the cause of child abuse prevention, victim rights and services. Advocacy & Education: Working with elected officials, government agency heads and the public, the CCAN advances laws, programs and preventative education that benefits children and families. Therapeutic Services: CCAN offers on site therapeutic services for the victims of child abuse and their non-offending persons in the child s life. Project Families Together: A support and education program to assist parents transition from substance abuse treatment to a sober lifestyle that is equipped to embrace family responsibility and protect children. **CCAN is a member of the National Children s Alliance, the Network of Children s Advocacy Centers, Prevent Child Abuse-New York State, and Long Island s United Way.
