2 Site-Based Committee Paul D. Schreiber High School COMMUNITY SUPPORT GUIDE A variety of outside agencies are available to supplement school services in handling personal issues. The following is a list of outside resources on Long Island that may be helpful. This list is representative of the wide range of community support services, but is by no means exhaustive. The presence of multi-lingual staff and the existence of a website are noted when applicable. General Organization: The Community Resource Database of Long Island (CRD) Website: Description: A free, online directory of health, human service, and education agencies and programs. Website provides detailed information on nearly 12,000 community resources, updated daily. Services are for children, teens, adults, families, and seniors, including health services, counseling & substance abuse services, support groups, child care and elder care, education and training programs, food and emergency services, parenting education, housing assistance, disability services, literacy and GED classes, family violence services, financial management assistance, hotlines, volunteer opportunities, houses of worship, schools, camps and youth services, libraries, chambers of commerce, civic and other community organizations. Organization: Long Island Crisis Center Telephone: Hotline: ; Business: Website: Multi-Lingual: Spanish-speaking staff available. Description: Nassau County's only generic 24 hour/7 day crisis intervention hotline service addressing issues of depression, eating disorders, suicide prevention, domestic violence, child abuse, substance abuse, sexually transmitted infections/aids, runaway youth and sexual identity. Additional services include a new Internet counseling service (2pm-11pm), a suicide outreach program, a countywide runaway hotline, community based educational programs, and a supportive program and coffeehouse for lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, transgender and questioning youth. Programs address teen suicide, depression, substance abuse, pregnancy, rape, sexual assault, child abuse, runaway and homeless youth, sexual identity, and AIDS/HIV prevention. All services are free and confidential. Organization: Hispanic Counseling Center Telephone: Website: Multi-Lingual: All staff is bi-lingual Spanish/English. Description: Established to serve the bi-lingual, bi-cultural population. Offers assistance in handling substance abuse, drug and alcohol abuse and mental health issues; offers ESL classes, computer classes; provides outpatient referrals to other services for treatment. Organization: North Shore Child & Family Guidance Center Telephone: Website: Multi-Lingual: There are services provided in Spanish. Description: Provides a variety of mental health services & referrals on a sliding scale to address issues including depression, anxiety, alcohol/substance abuse, teenage pregnancy, physical and sexual abuse, learning disabilities, ADHD, separation and divorce, suicide threats/attempts. Staff includes social workers, psychologists, psychiatrists, and alcohol and drug counselors who provide diagnosis and treatment, offering individual, group and family therapy; substance abuse treatment; as well as advocacy and case management services.

Will call translator for any language. Description: Can anonymously report known or suspected abuse of children under 18. Organization: Coalition Against Domestic Violence Telephone: , Domestic Violence Hotline (24 hours, 7 days/week) , Rape and Sexual Assault Hotline (24 hours, 7 days/week) , Information, education training for professionals; consultation on establishing protocols and/or procedures (9am-5pm) Website: Multi-Lingual: Spanish, French Creole Description: Can anonymously report known or suspected abuse in the household. The organization offers information and services related to domestic violence, violence in dating relationships, abuse of the elderly, children who witness family violence and sexual assault; and provides legal assistance, referral to additional services, and assistance in keeping you safe. Alcohol Abuse Organization: Al-Anon/Alateen Telephone: Website: then click on Southern New York Description: Al-Anon s primary purpose is to help family and friends of alcoholics. Alateen, which is part of the Al-Anon fellowship, is for younger members. Currently there are meetings in Port Washington at the Lutheran Church and St. Stephens Church. Organization: Alcoholics Anonymous Telephone: Website: Multi-Lingual: English-speaking staff only, but can refer to Spanish speaking meetings in Hempstead. Description: A self-help, 12-step program for alcoholics who wish to stop drinking. The goal is accomplished through group meetings and group support. The website offers a 20-question self-test. Organization: North Shore Child & Family Guidance Center (see General section above) Cancer Organization: Adelphi Breast Cancer Hotline and Support Program Telephone: Sandi Kafenbaum, ACSW New York State Breast Cancer Hotline: Website: Multi-Lingual: Angela Palma, provides Spanish language services. Description: Provides support groups for teens as well as adults. Program serves as the only comprehensive, university-based, breast cancer counseling program in New York State that is staffed by certified social workers and has diversified support groups, individual counseling, and family counseling. Clearinghouse for breast cancer resources and organizations throughout New York State.
4 Organization: American Cancer Society Telephone: 800-ACS-2345 Website: Multi-Lingual: Information is available on the website in Spanish and Asian languages. Description: Provides information for patients, family and friends, on cancer, treatment options, treatment decision tools, clinical trials and coping; and information for survivors on support programs. Organization: Cancer Care Telephone: Website: Multi-Lingual: Bi-lingual Spanish/English social workers on staff. Description: Provides professional support services to anyone affected by cancer: people with cancer, caregivers, children, loved ones, and the bereaved. 40 social workers provide professional counseling individually or through professionally facilitated support groups in three different ways: online, through the telephone and on-site at a CancerCare location. Drug Abuse Organization: Nassau County Department of Drug and Alcohol Addiction Telephone: Methadone Maintenance Program; TIPS Unit Website: N/A Description: The Substance Alternative Clinic (Methadone Maintenance) helps people trying to stop using opiates. Treatment Intake and Placement Services unit (TIPS) meets with people, makes appropriate referrals for outpatient treatment, provides information, and advocates. Organization: Narcotics Anonymous Telephone: Website: Description: Self-help, 12-step program for those wishing to stop using narcotics. The goal is accomplished through group meetings and group support. Eating Disorders Organization: National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders Telephone: (9am-5pm, Monday-Friday CST) Website: Description: Provides help for those with anorexia, bulimia, and compulsive overeating. Offers a counseling hotline, a national network of free support groups, referrals to health care professionals, and education and prevention programs to promote self-acceptance and healthy lifestyles. Organization: National Eating Disorders Association-Long Island (NEDA-LI) (formerly known as the Eating Disorder Council of Long Island) Telephone: Website: Description: The organization is comprised of professionals who specialize in eating disorders, including psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, counselors and nutritionists. They lead free support groups, provide referral sources for treatment, educate the public, and run a toll-free information and referral helpline.

The goal is accomplished through group meetings and group support. Organization: Solutions Program for Eating Disorders (in Roslyn Heights) Telephone: Website: Description: The program is run by psychotherapist Virginia Porcello, who helps families assess eating and weight history, obstacles and challenges that have kept individuals from losing weight. Families meet with psychologists, social workers, nutritionists and exercise trainers. Gay and Lesbian Services Organization: Pride For Youth Telephone: Hotline (24/7) Website: Description: Counseling and referrals to additional services that can help lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered youth in crisis. Operates a Coffeehouse where LGBT youth and non-gay allies can socialize, on Friday evenings. Under the auspices of the Long Island Crisis Center (see above). Organization: Gay and Lesbian Switchboard of Long Island Telephone: (Monday-Friday, 7-10pm) Website: Description: Provides peer counseling and information services for the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered communities of Long Island. Legal Services Organization: Nassau County Bar Association Telephone: Website: Description: Referrals for low cost or pro-bono (free) assistance. Mental Health Services Organization: North Shore Child & Family Guidance Center (see General section above) Organization: Port Counseling Center Telephone: [email protected] Multi-Lingual: Bilingual counselors on staff. Description: Comprehensive counseling services. Especially geared toward drug and alcohol abuse. Fees on a sliding scale.

Description: Reproductive services including counseling, exams, contraception, referral and abortion services provided at a sliding scale fee. Includes a comprehensive, medically-accurate sexuality education program. Organization: Children of Hope Safe Haven Telephone: (HOPE) Website: Description: Free, anonymous & confidential counseling, information and referrals are available 24 hours/7 days a week to pregnant women, and those who have just given birth, who wish to relinquish their newborns under the Safe Haven Law of New York State. Founded by the Ambulance Medical Technicians of the Nassau County Police Department. Runaway Services Organization: Girls & Boys Town National Hotline Telephone: (800) Website: Multi-Lingual: Assistance in Spanish is available. Description: Provides services & referrals for troubled and runaway youth. Organization: The Runaway Hotline Telephone: (24/7, part of the LI Crisis Center) Website: Multi-Lingual: Spanish-speaking staff available. Description: For runaways, homeless, abused and maltreated youth and their families. Crisis counseling & emergency housing assistance to Long Island youth. Weight Management Programs Organization: North Shore-LIJ Health System's Center for Weight Management in Great Neck Telephone: , 8:30am-9pm Mon-Thurs (voice mail after 5pm) Website: Multi-Lingual Staff: N/A Description: The center offers a program for children and adults who have problems with overeating and unsuccessful diets. It's overseen by a medical team including physicians, nutritionists, exercise physiologists and health psychologists. The center provides group and individual behavioral therapy, nutrition and fitness evaluations.
