OUR PROGRAM Children are encouraged to express self-reliance, make choices, initiate their own activities, and solve problems Recent brain research indicates that a stimulating preschool environment greatly contributes to brain development and a child s chance of success in life. A high quality preschool program creates a framework for adult success and makes a permanent contribution to the participant s life. The Los Angeles Unified School District, Early Childhood Education Division has implemented an Early Literacy Program for more than 12,000 infants to five year-old children based on this research. Our staff reflects high standards for educational excellence. We believe that children move through stages of development based on their knowledge and experiences. Based on this premise, we provide children with cognitive, linguistic, physical and social-emotional learning experiences through positive interaction with adults and peers and through the use of challenging materials. The instructional program is based on a child-centered curriculum. Children are encouraged to express self-reliance, make choices, initiate their own activities, and solve problems. We recognize and believe that each child is unique and special. We actively support diversity through an antibias and multicultural environment for all children. The Los Angeles Unified School District operates the largest subsidized early childhood program in the State of California. Most of the programs are operated at or near elementary schools. Some programs are also housed at middle schools, high schools, and adult skill centers. Early Childhood Education Division administers 300 programs at 229 sites serving approximately 15,000 children. All centers are open year around. Early Childhood Education Division also offers non traditional hours of service at several sites providing service at night and on Saturday. Children are encouraged to express self-reliance, make choices, initiate their own activities, and solve problems. We recognize and believe that each child is unique and special.
