ITEF 2013 İstanbul Tanpinar Literature Festival October 31st November 10th 2013 October 31st November 3rd / İstanbul November 1st 2nd / Erzurum, 04 10 November / Konya, Ankara, Bursa ITEF 2013 City and Game Activity Report Between October 30th and November 3rd, readers met their favorite authors in Istanbul, Ankara, Bursa, Erzurum and Konya at the 2013 ITEF İstanbul Tanpinar Literature Festival. This year s City and Game themed festival was hold with the main sponsorship of Vehbi Koç Foundation, and with the travel sponsorship of Turkish Airlines. Once again, the festival hosted readings and panel discussions, as well as meetings for professionals in the publishing sector, activities for children, and events aiming to introduce Turkish literature to the global literary scene. All the events were bilingual, in Turkish and English. In cooperation with Istanbul Provincial Directorate of National Education Writers in Schools programme events with foreign authors in schools have been conducted. Furthermore, there were Café Amsterdam events, nights of literary performances, a special board game tournament, thematic discussions that have been created with the cooperation of Fabisad, networking events for professionals within the framework of the ITEF Fellowship Programme, a series of literary activities organized by Dergah Publishing House in Ahmet Hamdi Tanpinar Literature Museum and Library. 1

ITEF 2013 Facts and Figures City and Game themed ITEF 2013- İstanbul Tanpinar Literature Festival was hold in 5 cities, 9 venues consisted of 79 events with 9 moderators and 61 writers from 15 countries who met with almost 11.000 readers. Attendance of the events in festival s branches (İstanbul, Erzurum, Konya, Ankara and Bursa) was open to public and free of charge together with the events in schools for children and young adults. The total number of guest writers has reached to 344 since the launch of the festival in 2009. The organizational team was comprised of 5 coordinators, 6 assistants, 24 volunteers and two photographers. ITEF cooperated with Istanbul Provincial Directorate of National Education to bring the festival s six foreign guests in the Writers in Schools programme together with the students in 10 boroughs of Istanbul with the contribution of Istanbul Provincial Directorate of National Education. According to the independent Press Agency Report, in 2013, ITEF has generated more than 1.000.000 worth of publicity equivalence. ITEF 2013 On the Focus: Austrian Literature On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the foundation of the Austrian Culture Office in Istanbul celebrations, in order to promote Austrian Literature, the opening event of ITEF started with readings of three important names of Austrian literature: Andrea Winkler, Thomas Stangl, and Teresa Präauer. Also, as the two important authors in Turkish Literature, Oya Baydar and Mario Levi read parts from their novels to the guests. 4

Professional Meetings Fellowship Programme In 2011, ITEF İstanbul Tanpinar Literature Festival, established the ITEF Professional Meetings Fellowship Programme as a place where writers, publishers, agents, translators, journalists, literary fund managers, literature festival coordinators, and everybody who has a passion for publishing can meet. In 2013 ITEF Professional Meetings Fellowship Programme added 10 Turkish Public Houses and accommodated 17 literary professionals from 15 countries, giving them the chance to meet with their colleagues in Turkey. Open calls determined the participants from various countries such as Germany, Armenia, Egypt and Canada to show a wide panorama of the Turkish literary scene, and brought the participants together with group meetings, office visits and literature parties. Meet the Authors: Writers Meeting Writers event is a platform which is closed to the public, aimed to bring foreign and Turkish authors together and give them an opportunity to exchange ideas, experiences on certain topic, and the writing profession in general. These discussions were accompanied by Müge İpliçki as the moderator with the contribution of five writers. Previously, many other writers such as Ece Temelkuran, Gündüz Vassaf, Ton van de Langkruis and Karin Karakaşlı were the moderators for the past years events. Additionally, ITEF s 2014 theme City and Journey put on the table at this Writers Meeting Writers event. 5

In its 5th year: Five Cities with Alberto Manguel Seventy years later, Alberto Manguel followed in Tanpinar s footsteps, and is going to write a new "Five Cities" essay, trying to find traces of the East in the West. In the course of the Five Cities in the Footsteps of Tanpinar event, world renowned author Alberto Manguel visited five Turkish cities for two days where each featured in Tanpinar s work (Istanbul, Ankara, Bursa, Erzurum and Konya) in order to retrace Tanpinar s steps. Manguel participated in discussions and talked in each of the five aforementioned cities. Yapi Kredi Publishing House will publish his impressions of this truly literary tour. This project, supported by Yapı Kredi Publishing House, Hotel Samm in Ankara, Nilüfer Municipality in Bursa and Konya Muncipality, constituting an international homage to Ahmed Hamdi Tanpinar began in Istanbul and returned to this city where the result of this attempt at a cultural reading started up during ITEF 2013. The scope of the project included visits of important libraries, universities, book shops and cultural centers in the featured cities. 6

The project was filmed by an independent team and ended in Nazım Hikmet Culture House in Bursa with a discussion and signing. Alberto Manguel Mentioned that during the writing process of Five Cities in the Footsteps of Tanpinar, he will come back to those five cities and as in his own terms want to get lost in the streets. Festival Book After the festival is over ITEF Festival Book was published with the contribution of the attending authors. This anthology, composed of selected writings, was designed as a long lasting symbol of the festival which is freely distributed in the international book fairs, sponsored by UPM- Kymmene Kağıt Ürünleri San. ve Tic. Ltd. Şti. since 2010. 4,000 copies of ITEF 2013 City and Game book were distributed to the event places and book stores. The visual art of the book was designed by the famous illustrator Kutlukhan Peker, and will be available in English in December 2013 7

Ahmet Hamdi Tanpinar Literature Museum and Library Special Events - Series Since 2012, ITEF is arranging different events focus on the different dimensions of Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar s works. This year s programme contained a series of special events focusing on his works, such as panel talks, with the aid of Dergâh Publishing s valuable writers; Tomris Giritlioğlu, Kenan Işık, Ekrem Işın and Abdullah Uçman. With the participation of Turkish writers, publishers and academics, panels discussing exclusively Turkish literatures will be brought together in the Ahmet Hamdi Tanpinar Literature Museum and Library Foreign Writers in Schools: In 2013, ITEF cooperated with Istanbul Provincial Directorate of National Education to include the festival s foreign guests in the latter s Writers in Schools programme. ITEF authors met with students in the 10 boroughs of Istanbul such as Çatalca, Güngören, Arnavutköy, Zeytinburnu, Çekmeköy and Şişli. The authors were assigned to schools according to the students age group and over the course of the festival, they had the chance to meet thousands of primary and secondary students in over 100 events. The former chairperson of Irish Writers Union, Conor Kostick was one of the important figures amog the attendance to the Foreign Writers in Schools dinner hosting by the Istanbul Provincial Directorate of National Education. 8

The Fabisad Talks Series Fabisad (Fantasy and Science Fiction Arts Association) together with ITEF, organized a series of talks, in Cezayir Restaurant, Aziz Kedi, İnsan Kitap and KargArt Four evenings of the festival space has been given to the artists of fantasy and science fiction, such as writers, illustrators, and playwrights including Bülent Somay, Sevin Okyay, Barış Müstecaplıoğlu, Murathan Mungan, Kutlukhan Kutlu, Doğu Yücel, Hasan Çolakoğlu, Can Evrenol, Galip Dursun, Emre Soyak, Kayra Küpçü, Erbuğ Kaya, Gülşah Elikbank, Hakan Bıçakçı and Sabri Gürses. Special attention has been given to the Turkish fantasy and SF scene in order to introduce it to the world s literary market. Murathan Mungan who is book Şairin Romanı won the Best Novel Prize in GIO Awards, reviewed his own book with the jury. Film Screening This year one of the events in the scope of ITEF also included a parallel event organized in collaboration with the Cervantes Institute. A selected section of Spanish movies, El secreto de sus ojos" and "Don Qujote de la Mancha I" were screened in this year s festival with free of charge. ITEF 2013 s Official Bookshops Bookstores such as Kirmizi Kedi Kitabevi, Aziz Kedi Kitabevi, and Insan Kitap, offered a 10% discount on books of the ITEF authors. The followers of the festival who went to these independent bookstores found ITEF s favourite authors from 25th October to the last day of the festival on the ITEF corner of these bookstores and had their books signed after the festival events. 9

About ITEF ITEF- İstanbul Tanpınar Edebiyat Festivali was developed by non-profit organization Kalem Kültür and it was held with the strategic partnership of Literature Across Frontiers the European Platform since 2009.
