3 The jurisdiction area of Antalya Metropolitan Municipality covers 19 districts and 903 quarters (21,109 square kilometers and 2,222,562 people). Antalya has a coastline of 640 km long. Antalya Metropolitan Municipality in accordance with the participatory democracy principles, informs the citizen concerned before undertaking any big project and applies the project only after obtaining their approvals. The foreign residents of Antalya, who have chosen to live and work in our city, will have the right to participate and express their opinions in the Metropolitan Municipality Assembly. Antalya Metropolitan Municipality contributes to the tourism, economy, industry, culture and infrastructure of the city with strategic investments. Antalya city s existing industry is environmentally friendly and sensitive to our natural and cultural heritages. 3

4 Antalya Metropolitan Municipality implements its projects on the basis of solidarity and dialogue with all of the communities of the city, together with them. Antalya, with an average of 300 sunny days per year and fertile soils, located in a temperate climate, is also the market leader in the fresh vegetables-fruits production and export. City of Antalya where green meets with blue, also known as the paradise on earth, the pearl of Mediterranean, and the Turkish Riviera, is among the world s most famous tourism destinations and one of the world s most visited cities with a yearly average of 13 million visitors. Within the wide boundaries of Antalya there is history, natural beauty and a rich variety of local life style to be discovered. Antalya city offers a secure and democratic environment for all its residents and foreign or domestic visitors. 4

5 The Old City of Antalya, also known as Kaleiçi, is an essential place to visit for those who would like to get a better understanding of Antalya s recent history and wish to get lost in its tangled streets. It is almost like an open air museum. The characteristic features of its buildings not only give an idea of Antalya s architectural heritage, but also reflect the lifestyles and traditions of the region. 5

7 ANTALYA CELEBRATES EUROPEAN LOCAL DEMOCRACY WEEK Antalya Metropolitan Municipality celebrated European Local Democracy Week to spread awareness about the experience of integrating local government with the community and local democracy. 7

8 Various guests from Germany, Hungary, Ukraine, Poland, and many local people participated in the event, which was held in front of the Metropolitan Municipality building. The Municipal Band performed the European Union International Anthem and other joyful songs. 8

9 MAYOR TÜREL ASKED CITIZENS OPINION ABOUT BIG MUNICIPAL PROJECTS In August 31, 2014; Antalya Metropolitan Municipality conducted a referandum for the EXPO Rail Line System Project as a participatory democracy practice. 8,777 people from 20 neighbourhoods participated in this referandum % of participants answered yes. 9

10 ŞARAMPOL STREET RENEWAL PROJECT At the referandum on October 18, 2015; Mayor Menderes Türel asked the public s opinion about the Şarampol Street Project (one of the oldest and most famous street in Antalya). Antalya s people tradesmen approved this project with 90.19% affirmative votes in the referandum from the 9 neighbourhoods. 10

11 KEPEZALTI URBAN RENEWAL PROJECT With the Kepezaltı Urban Renewal Project, Antalya Metropolitan Municipality puts once again an example of participatory democracy into practice. Our Municipality has adopted the principal to take the consent of the citizens in the Urban Renewal Projects through meetings with neighbourhoods. In order to solve the so far accumulated settlements, planning and property issues in Kepez and Santral neighborhoods in Kepezaltı, a new settlement of high quality life and spaces is being created with the participation of the neighbourhood residents. 11

12 ANTALYA PARTICIPATED IN THE COMMUNITIES IN BLOOM COMPETITION Antalya is the first city from Turkey that participated in the competition of Communities in Bloom. This competition was initiated and organized by a Canadian non-profit organization called Communities in Bloom Foundation. Antalya Metropolitan Municipality conducted this project under the name of Kaleiçi Hıdırlık Street Urban Design Project, where many streets in Kaleiçi were decorated with flowers. 12

13 MAYOR MENDERES TÜREL DEDICATED THE FIVE BLOOMS GOLD COMMUNITY S AWARD WITH THE PEOPLE OF ANTALYA Antalya won the Five Blooms Gold Community s award in the Communities in Bloom competition. Mayor of Antalya Metropolitan Municipality, Menderes Türel, stated his happiness over winning an international award, and has expressed his feelings as follows: We dedicate this award to the citizens of Antalya who are the real owner of it. 13

14 MAYOR MENDERES TÜREL MEETS THE STUDENTS Mayor Menderes Türel is regularly meeting the students by visiting high schools. He emphasized in his visits that they are trying to leave the youth a better Antalya. Mayor Türel gave the students many chess sets as a gift to deter students from social media and conribute to their mental development. On the other hand, Antalya Metropolitan Municipality organized a chess tournament between children and young adults. 14

15 THE LEGENDS OF FOOTBALL IN ANTALYA In cooperation with Antalya Metropolitan Municipality and Consulate of Germany in Antalya, Legends Cup Soccer Tournament was held. Antalya Metropolitan Municipality and Antalya Consulate of Germany teams consisting of Turkish and German veteran footballers, FC Adler Antalya, Antalyaspor, Alanyaspor, Hannover 96 and Antalya Museum participated in First Legends Cup in order to strengthen Turkish-German Friendship. Former famous footballers such as Fabian Ernst, Martin Groth, Savaş Koç and Deniz Barış participated in the tournament. The aim was to strengthen social relations with Germany and German nationals in Antalya. 15

16 EXPO 2016 ANTALYA The theme of the Expo 2016 in Antalya is "Children and Flowers". With Expo 2016, Antalya will become the capital of the world's children. Children from Antalya, Turkey, and all around the world will meet in pride in a much more beautiful Antalya, with its roads, intersections, parks, the most beautiful gardens in the world, and beautiful parks and playgrounds. 16

17 Within this context, EXPO 2016 Antalya Project will be a great organization, which encourages respect in multicultural societies, the development of dialogue, interaction and awareness. 17

18 TOYS OF ALL OVER THE WORLD ARE DISPLAYED IN THE TOY MUSEUM The Toy Museum belonging to Antalya Metropolitan Municipality displays more than three thousand toys. It appeals to its large collection, which features toys from many countries such as Germany, England, Japan, China, Russia, Peru and various regions of Anatolia, including the toys of Hollywood celebrities and world famous singers. The Toy Museum appeals to children of the world, as well as local and foreigner children from different cultures and countries. By organizing workshops, Toy Museum strengthens communication between children from every culture. 18

19 FOREIGN LANGUAGES COURSES IN ASMEK English, German, Russian and Arabic lectures are given free of charge in ASMEKs (Antalya Art and Vocational Training Courses) of Antalya Metropolitan Municipality in 14 centers and 39 different courses for 7,200 trainees in total. The foreign nationals living in Antalya can also attend the courses. These lectures contribute to intercultural dialogue and interaction in the context of coexistence in a multicultural society. 19

20 GUEST THEATRES, COMMON WORKSHOPS AND FOREIGN DIRECTORS Guest Theatres Project was launched by Antalya Metropolitan Municipality to strengthen the universal power of the theatre, to provide artistic and cultural exchanges among countries, and to share mutual experiences and ideas. By inviting theatre groups from abroad to our city, Antalya Metropolitan Municipality Theatre is bringing the people of the city together. On January 29-31, 2015, Das Papier Theatre from Germany displayed the theatrical play called Hans im Glück ; on February 27-28, 2015, S arza Teatro from Italy displayed the theatrical play called Tzia Birora ; on October 30-31, 2015 a pantomime show from Bulgaria of Alexander Illiev called Pierrot took to the stage. In addition, theatre activities from Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, Azerbaijan and Germany will be performed in the near future. 20

21 The requirement of democracy is multi-vocality. The function of local press in a democratic society is very important. By respecting others rights, everyone should be able to express their own views and various opinions, and these should be shared with the public. To provide this, one of the most important means of mass communication are newspapers. Antalya also supports local media and newspapers within its districts to provide multi-vocality and give place to the local elements. The existence of over 20 local newspapers in Antalya is an indication of multi-vocality. 21

22 INTERNATIONAL PIANO FESTIVAL AND INTERNATIONAL ANTALYA FILM FESTIVAL Antalya, gateway to the world of our country, is hosting very important international events in the field of art and culture, such as the International Piano Festival and the International Antalya Film Festival. Prominent musicians of the world performed at International Piano Festival. The 16 th International Piano Festival was held between November 17, 2015 and November 29,

23 International Antalya Film Festival brings the movies of the most important and respected names, especially from Asia and Europe, together with movie lovers. 52 nd International Antalya Film Festival was held between November 29, 2015 and December 6, These international festivals and events of Antalya Metropolitan Municipality bring together the communities from different languages, religions, nationals and cultures through art as a universal language. 23
