The District s dress code and grooming standards have been established to teach grooming and hygiene, to prevent disruption, and to minimize safety hazards at school and school-related functions. All students shall wear clothing that is neat, appropriate, and modest to the gender of the student. Each campus, not unlike a work place, promotes a productive, business-like atmosphere conducive to learning. The FBISD full dress code policy can be found at: http://www.fortbendisd.com/page/947 Fort Bend ISD Police Department All secondary schools in the Fort Bend ISD have one or more police officers assigned to the campus. These officers are not security officers. Each officer is a certified police officer in the State of Texas and holds the same power as city, county and state police officers. Fort Bend ISD police officers have the authority to investigate complaints, question students and issue citations. The FBISD Police number is 281-634-5500. Gum Students are not allowed to chew gum on campus at anytime. Repeated gum offenses will result in disciplinary consequences. Hallways Students are allowed five minutes between each period for changing classrooms, going to their locker, using the restrooms and water fountain, etc. Students must be in the classroom prior to the tardy bell in order to avoid being late. In the hallways, students should refrain from shouting or talking loudly. Students should not be running or pushing in the hallways for safety reasons. Students are not to block the flow of traffic by standing in the hallway in groups or walking the halls in group fashion. Library Use Students are permitted access to the library during the course of the full school day. Students may also use the library beginning at 8:10 a.m. prior to the school day and after school hours until 4:30 p.m. Students are admitted to the library with a written pass from a teacher during the school day. Books may be checked out for two weeks at a time. Computers are available for student use. Students are not to remove any materials or publications, without authorization, from the library. Page 6
Lifesaver Program Life Saver Program The Lifesaver program serves as a means for students to confidentially and anonymously inform school staff of any dangerous/concerning behaviors or safety concerns. It is preventative program. We know that in many cases, especially in the case of suicide, that the person almost always reaches and tells someone (a peer) about the event prior to it occurring. The students are to complete one of the forms and then put it anonymously in one of lifesaver buckets, which are checked several times a day and are located in the front office, library, counseling office, nurse s office, and Mrs. Benevides office). When students complete the form action is taken immediately, but the student who put the form in may not know of the outcome because they submitted it confidentially and it may not concern them. Lockers Each student is assigned a building locker for books and clothing. Students are not to trade lockers or allow unauthorized sharing of lockers. You are not to use any other locker than the one assigned to you. Any item affixed to the interior of the locker must not result in any damage to the locker. If locker damage does occur, the student is responsible for repair costs. The exteriors of lockers are not to be written upon or decorated. The rigging or pegging of lockers so that they can be opened without a combination is against school policy and will be subject to disciplinary action. Even when assigned to an individual student, lockers remain under the jurisdiction of the school. The school reserves the right, whenever the administration deems appropriate, to inspect any and all lockers. The school is not responsible for items lost or stolen from student lockers. These restrictions and limitations apply to gym lockers also. Lost and Found Items of value such as jewelry and electronic devices are turned in to the front office. Clothing, shoes, books, and backpacks are turned in to the lost and found basket located in the cafeteria. Glasses are turned into the nurse s office. Unclaimed articles will be donated to a charitable organization at the end of each semester. The school is not responsible for items lost or stolen at school. Student Illnesses Students who feel ill at school MUST be evaluated in the nurse s office. Students should not call or text their parents to come pick them up if they feel sick. All ill students will be released through the nurse s office. Students not released through the nurse s office will be charged an unexcused absence. Page 7
Student Planners Students need to report to each class on a daily basis prepared with necessary supplies. Student planners will be provided and the student must bring their planner to each class daily. Planners are considered school property throughout the school year and must be replaced if lost or stolen. The purpose of the planner is to record classroom assignments, report disciplinary conduct violations, and provide hall passes when the student leaves the classroom. Parents are encouraged to ask for and view planners daily. Students who lose their planner may purchase a new one for $5.00. Tardies Students are considered late for class if they are not inside the classroom when the tardy bell rings. Students will receive a discipline consequence when they have 4 tardies in a class period in a semester. Each additional tardy after 4 will result in additional discipline consequences. Tardies will be counted every nine weeks. Textbooks Once the textbook has been checked out to a student, the student is responsible for the book. Book covers must be used by the student, and books treated with care. A student who is issued a damaged book should note the damages on the Textbook Conditions Check Form and report the damage to the teacher immediately upon receipt of the textbook. Any student failing to return a book issued by the school forfeits the right to free textbooks until the book is returned or paid for by the student and/or parent. However, a student will be provided textbooks for use at school during the school day only until the lost book is returned or paid for by the student or parent. If books are lost or damaged, the parent/legal guardian of the student will be held financially responsible. Valuables Students are responsible for the safekeeping of all personal items brought on campus. Recovery of lost or stolen items is rare. The best prevention is not to bring them on campus. SMS and FBISD are not responsible for lost or stolen items. Verbal/Written Abuse There is no place at school for any behavior that hurts another person s feelings. Name-calling, hazing (teasing), derogatory remarks, slam books, sexual harassment, bullying, cyber-bullying, inappropriate physical contact, humiliation, etc. will not be tolerated. Any negative comments regarding race, ethnic background or sexual orientations will not be tolerated. Students engaging in this type of behavior will be disciplined. Visitors All persons visiting the campus must sign in at the Front Office reception area by using the Raptor Security System. All visitors must present a valid driver s license or acceptable form of identification upon entering the building for each visit. Visits are limited to 30 minutes a day in order to minimize distractions to the learning environment. Classroom visits must be arranged 24 hours in advance with teacher and administrator approval. It is at the discretion of the classroom teacher and administration to allow or deny parent visitation based on events determined for the day. Specifically, no classroom visits will be allowed during tests and state assessments. A minor must be accompanied by their parent or legal school guardian. Page 8
ZAP Program-Parent Information The Zeros Aren't Permitted (ZAP) is a program that emphasizes the belief that all assignments are important and must be completed. The ZAP is a system to provide support for students, promote responsibility, teach good study habits, reinforce the value of hard work and effort, and foster good communication between home and school. The ZAP program is an extension of the late work policy. Students who do not complete and turn in daily work during their class period on the day it is due will be issued a ZAP. All parent notification will be sent via email. Parents need to enable notifications through Skyward Family Access to receive emails for missing work. See the how-to handout on page 12 for directions. It is important for parents to keep email addresses current and updated in Skyward. Failure to update email addresses does not exclude students from participation in the ZAP program. Parents are encouraged to check Family Access regularly to keep track of missing work. Major grade projects and essays are not subject to the ZAP program. Students must clear the ZAP with their teacher by 9:00 AM the next day. Students who do not clear their work will be assigned a PM detention for the same day to get the work done. Failure to do so will result in a second detention. Failure to turn the work in after it is 3 days late will result in a Saturday detention assignment. Even if the student turns the work in after the Saturday detention, the student will still be expected to serve the Saturday detention for failing to comply despite multiple opportunities to get the work turned in. Incomplete work will be graded as is with the additional late point penalty subtracted. All work not completed within the allowed time frame will be entered as a zero. Students will receive an 11 point deduction on the first day an assignment is late. Students will continue to get a late work deduction for each day it is late. After four days, the highest grade a student can earn is a 60. In accordance with the late work policy the following grade reductions will be made to daily work: 1 st day- 11 points off of earned grade 2 nd day- 20 points off earned grade 3 rd day- 30 points off earned grade 4 th day and after- the highest grade a student can earn is a 60 Any missing assignments not completed within the window of the FBISD late work policy will result in a zero. Sartartia Middle School Grading System SECONDARY GRADES 6-8 CRITERIA (EIA-R) The grading scale for Sartartia Middle School is as stated below: A = 90 100 B = 80 89 C = 75 79 D = 70 74 F = below 70 All graded items are to be based on the Fort Bend ISD curriculum guide that is aligned with the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills and standardized assessments for the course. Each grading period should consist of a minimum of fourteen (14) numerically graded items. A minimum of three (3) grades recorded should be major grades. Due to differences in subject area needs, specific guidelines for the inclusion of unit tests and/or exams and definitions of major and daily grades will be determined district-wide by subject area committees. Examples are provided under Weighting of Grades in this section. All grades will be weighted as follows: 1. Major Grades will count as 50 percent of the student s grading period average. 2. Daily Grades will count as 50 percent of the student s grading period average. MAJOR GRADES: Assessments of complex assignments typically requiring more than one (1) day to complete are called major grades. A minimum of three (3) grades recorded should be major grades. Advance notice must be given to students of any activity or test that constitutes a major grade. Major grades are not subject to the SMS ZAP program. The following are examples of major grades: Chapter or unit tests (only major grade subject to re- test policy) Projects Research paper Skill assessments, i.e., essays, performance, oral presentations Major Grades must be distributed equally through each grading period. DAILY GRADES: Assessments of assignments typically requiring only one (1) day to complete are called daily grades. A minimum of eleven (11) grades recorded should be daily grades. Daily grades must be taken from a variety of different assessments of the curriculum. Daily grades are subject to the SMS ZAP program. Examples of the student s mastery of the curriculum can include: Guided or independent practice Quizzes Activities Participation Teacher observation, i.e., small group participation, labs, oral presentations Homework Daily Grades must be distributed equally through each grading period. Page 11
HIGH SCHOOL COURSES TAKEN IN MIDDLE SCHOOL: Both semesters of a full year high school course taken in middle school must be successfully completed prior to entering ninth grade for course credit to appear on the student s high school transcript. Students who earn a passing grade of D in a course may apply to repeat the course and receive grade points but no additional credit. Each time a course is taken, it will be factored into the total number of courses attempted for GPA. This option is not open to students who earn a grade of C or above in a course. Students who wish to repeat a course that they have passed with a D must complete an application signed by the parent and student and receive approval from the principal to ensure that both parents and students understand that no credit will be awarded for the repeated course and to provide a tracking system for the registrar and counselors. II. Late Work: A. Daily Grade Assignments: 1 day late= 11 points off 2 days late= 20 points off 3 days late= 30 points off Assignments turned in after three days will receive a grade no higher than a 60. All daily graded work is subject to the ZAP program. B. Major Grade Assignments: Major assignments/projects will be accepted 1 day late. If the assignment/project would have received a grade ranging from 100 70, then the grade of the assignment/project is a 70. If the assignment/project would have received a grade less than 70 had it been turned in on time, the student will receive the grade the assignment/project earned on its merit. Major grades are not subject to the ZAP program. III. Make Up Work Board Policy (EIAR) It is the student s responsibility to ask the teacher for make-up work immediately upon returning to school. If a test was scheduled before the student was absent, then the student may be required to take the test the day he/she returns. If a student has missed work, the teacher will give the student the opportunity to make up the work for a grade. The teacher must have a system in place to notify a student of an assignment which occurred during his/her absence. Generally, one (1) day for each day of excused absence will be provided for the make-up work. IV. Retest/Reteach Policy Reteaching is a necessary component in the mastery of essential knowledge and skills. Reteaching must occur whenever the teacher determines that a student has not mastered the objective(s) at the independent practice or assessment level. There must be documentation of reteaching when the teacher has determined that the student has not mastered curriculum objectives. Documentation that reteaching has occurred may consist of entries in the teacher s lesson plans or grade book. The decision as to how to reassess objectives that are retaught is the option of the classroom teacher. However, there must be evidence that reassessment has occurred. Reassessment methods include, but are not limited to: additional assignments cumulative tests (unit, semester) Page 12
demonstration/performance discussion/review observation oral questioning problem-solving teacher made check list reteaching in another unit correcting the original assignment retesting Retesting guidelines apply to major assessments only. Daily grades, quizzes, projects, and semester exams are not included in the retesting guidelines. The following guidelines apply to retesting: Students who received a failing grade on a major assessment must retest; the retest may include items from all objectives covered on the original assessment or only those objectives not mastered by the student. Students scoring less than 75 have the option to retest; the retest may include items from all objectives covered on the original assessment or only those objectives not mastered by the student. In order to retest, a student must attend a reteaching session for remediation of non-mastered objectives. Reteaching must be completed prior to the administration of the next major assessment in the course. The highest grade that may be earned on a retest is 75. Reassessment and retesting procedures should be consistent across grade levels/individual departments/or the campus as determined by each campus. V. Parent Access to Student Grades Parents may monitor their child s grades through Family Access. Parents may sign up for Family Access through the FBISD website. http://www.fortbendisd.com/family-access Page 13
Sartartia Middle School Classroom Behavior Expectations For All Students SMS students are expected to conduct themselves in a manner which is responsible and respectful. Students who do not conduct themselves in such a manner are subject to disciplinary consequences under the Fort Bend ISD Student Code of Conduct. Each infraction will be recorded on the SMS school-wide behavior record sheet. This sheet is located in your SMS planner and must remain in your planner at all times. You are not allowed to tear the behavior sheet out of the planner. Removing the behavior sheet and/or hall pass from the planner will be considered a damaged planner. Not having your planner with you at all times is an infraction and could result in a detention. If a student loses or damages their planner, a new one can be purchased for $5.00. Students must purchase their new planner before school. If a student is asked for their planner for a discipline issue and the student does not have their planner, a discipline referral will be issued. 1 st Signature: Verbal Warning - The teacher will sign the behavior sheet for verbal warning. When the student receives a verbal warning, the teacher will discuss how the infraction has impacted the learning environment with the student. The teacher and student will address how this action should be corrected and what the student should work on to meet the classroom expectations. 2 nd Signature: Verbal Warning - The teacher will sign the behavior sheet for verbal warning. 3 rd Signature: Parent Contact - The teacher signing the behavior sheet will make contact with a parent informing the parent of continuing infractions. 4 th Signature: Office Referral - A discipline referral is sent to the Assistant Principal s Office. 5 th Signature: Office Referral - A discipline referral is sent to the Assistant Principal s Office.
