Academic Academies Informational Packet and Application Mission Statement To provide the best learning opportunities for students to develop school to real world work skills necessary for successful performance in a globally competitive workplace. Academies are part of both Poinciana High School s Smaller Learning Communities and the School District of Osceola County s Choice and Charter Schools program.

Poinciana Curriculum Fair February 9th, 2012 Poinciana High School 2300 S. Poinciana Blvd. Kissimmee, FL 34758 The program will begin at 6:00 pm with an overview of the Academy programs and the events of the evening. High School Academy Programs Acceptance Nights Each program will hold an individual acceptance night for prospective students and their parents/guardians at the school location. At these events, staff will provide detailed information on the program and opportunities available at the school. A question and answer period will follow the presentation. High School Academies Application Process Students interested in enrolling in one of the academy programs are required to submit an application following their ninth grade year. Each component of the student application, including signed student forms, parent forms, and teacher recommendations, must be turned in to the academy teacher before 2:30 pm on March 15th, 2012. Each program has specific application requirements. Please feel free to call the respective coordinators with any questions you may have regarding the application process. A brief summary of requirements for each program is listed below: Academy Programs Academy of Finance Submit an electronic portfolio Academy of Health Science Submit an entrance essay Academy of STEM Submit an electronic portfolio or essay 1 Academy of Culinary Arts Submit an entrance essay Academy of Communication and Technology Submit an electronic portfolio Students not enrolled in Poinciana High School at the time of application must mail or fax the application before 2:30 pm on March 15th, 2012 using the following contact information: Mail: Poinciana High School Academy Admissions 2300 S. Poinciana Blvd. Kissimmee, FL 34758 Fax: 407-870-0382 Attention: Academy Admissions The standard application and recommendation forms may be copied if a student applies to more than one program. 1 Based on their chosen program, students who apply to the Academy of STEM will be required to either write an entrance essay or complete an electronic portfolio. Please refer any questions regarding specific application requirements to the coordinator for your chosen program within the academy.

Academy Programs STEM/New Technology/Finance Electronic Portfolio Requirements Save work to a recordable CD (CD-R) using the following guidelines: All work must be the applicant s original work, created specifically for this application. Create a folder with your first and last name. Within this folder, save each completed activity in a separate folder. Complete two of the three activities specific to the academy to which you are applying. Do not save essay responses on the CD. Print a hard copy to include with your application. Include the CD with your application. Select 2 projects from the list below: 1. Create a newsletter on school related issues. Integration of proper grammar and formal diction are expected to be evident in the product. 2. Create a website for your school or business that can be viewed from either Firefox or Internet Explorer. There should be a homepage with at least four additional links. The current school website will not be accepted. 3. Create a self-running multimedia presentation that markets Poinciana High School s athletic programs. 4. Create a brochure to introduce yourself to the admissions committee. The purpose of this brochure should be to convince us to accept you into the academy. Let us get to know you by including interests, hobbies, and career goals. 5. Create a floor design of a business office that will accommodate a staff of 12-15 people. 6. Create a logo for the Academy of Finance. 7. Create an original professional resume that reflects your accomplishments or the accomplishments of a fictional client. 8. Create a working database for a business in which five employees can enter sales records for each of the four products they sell. Employees should be able to track sales by product type or by employee.

Application Timeline Admission for 2011-2012 School Year February 9th, 2011 Academy Programs Family Night/Curriculum Fair Informational session on all academy programs that will be offered at Poinciana High School for the 2011-2012 school year 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm Poinciana Cafeteria March 15th, 2011 April 8th, 2011 April 15th, 2011 Application Deadline: Completed application packets must be turned in to the guidance office before 3:00 pm to be considered for admission to an academy. Make sure to include the application and all requirements of the academies. Ensure that all information is correct in the application packet. By this date, the admissions committee will mail notification letters to all students who completed the application procedure. Appeal Deadline: Any student denied acceptance into their chosen academy will have the opportunity to appeal the school s decision. Should a student wish to appeal, he or she must submit a formal letter of appeal before 3:00 pm on this date. Appeals must be turned in to the guidance department. April 24th, 2011 April 26th, 2011 May 16th, 2011 Acceptance Night: Accepted students from both the Academies of Finance, Health Science, and Technology will meet at the school for a pre-orientation session @ 6:00pm Acceptance Night: Accepted students from the Academy of STEM and Academy of Culinary Arts will meet at the school for a pre-orientation session @ 6:00pm Freshman Night: Incoming 9 th graders will meet at the school for a preorientation @ 6:00pm

Dear Student and Parent(s), POINCIANA HIGH SCHOOL Academy Application Letter of Intent to Attend The Academies at Poinciana High School provide a broad variety of specialized curricula for highly motivated students. To ensure success in these programs, Poinciana High School requires that students and parents make the following commitments: Students will: 1. Follow the rules of the Poinciana High School as outlined in the student code of conduct, including on the bus and while participating in field trips. Students with three or more discipline referrals may be dismissed from their academy. 2. Actively participate in each class by being prepared, listening attentively, offering relative input, posing insightful questions, taking Cornell notes, and completing other activities necessary to meet the expectations set forth in each class. 3. Submit quality work in a timely manner, maintain the highest degree of academic integrity, and be responsible for maintaining a 2.5 GPA throughout the selected course of study. 4. Schedule appointments or vacations at times that do not conflict with classes so as to maintain an excellent attendance record; students who have more than 5 unexcused absences per semester may be dismissed from their academy. 5. Actively contribute to a positive, safe, and cooperative school and academy environment. 6. Actively contribute to activities sponsored by the specific academy. 7. Have a valid social security number. 8. Complete a minimum of 20 documented internship hours during the 2012-2013 academic year. 9. Maintain all other requirements set forth by the academy in which they are enrolled. I understand that if I do not meet the standards of an academy program either because of the quality of my work or because of my performance and commitment to the program there will be consequences, including the possibility of revocation of the school choice seat and/or the privilege of bus transportation.
