Liminka Bay is one of Finland s finest wetlands. THE LIMINKA BAY WETLANDS Valuable on a European scale, the Liminka Bay wetlands offer a compelling experience for the entire family. The number of bird species at Liminka Bay is particularly remarkable. In all, two hundred species of bird can be encountered in the area. The wetlands are at their busiest during the spring and autumn migrations, and the area s bird towers offer great opportunities for observing birds in their natural habitat. From the tower, you can admire eagles, swans, geese, and many types of shore bird and duck. Black-tailed godwit One of Liminka Bay s rarest attractions is the black-tailed godwit. This very rare species can be encountered regularly in Finland only in the Liminka Bay environment. Whooper Swan Borrow binoculars and you can spot birds in the Virkkula bird tower, only six hundred metres from the Liminka Bay Visitor Centre. A path accessible to wheel chairs and small children leads to the tower, making it a favourite among families. Ruff In Liminka Bay you can see white-tailed eagles soaring above the sea. The Liminka Bay wetland area was born as a result of uplift in the local land. By following an uplift trail, which starts at the visitor centre and is around seven kilometres in length, you can investigate the rising of the sea bed in the area.

Aabraham Ojanperä (1856-1916) was a Liminka-born opera singer and vocal pedagogue. Ojanperä, an orphan, was recognised for his singing gifts in Liminka; the elders of the district paid for his studies at the Jyväskylä seminary. From Jyväskylä, the talented singer s road took him first to Helsinki and from there to the royal conservatory of Dresden. During his studies, he performed very successfully in the city of Dresden. In 1882, Aabraham Ojanperä was enticed to return to his home country as the first singing teacher of the recently founded Helsinki Music School, nowadays the Sibelius Academy. Ojanperä worked as the Music School s singing teacher for thirty years, then left his position due to serious illness, returning to Liminka. Aabraham Ojanperä died of a heart attack in Liminka on February 2 1916 Aabraham Ojanperä The numerous mills in the Liminka bay area remind visitors of its agricultural history The history of the settlement of Liminka and Lumijoki, the two largest regions in the Liminka Bay area, stretches as far back as the 1300s. Records details the legacy of the Viking and Saami people, who used to live and cast their influence in the area. The old parish district of Liminka was at its furthest-reaching in the early 1600s, when its jurisdiction reached from Oulu to Kainuu. You can investigate the rich history of the area by visiting among other spots old Liminka, Kankaanpää street in Lumijoki, or Varjakka harbour. An exhibition showing the work of Vilho Lampi has been established at the oldest folk school building in Northern Finland, located in Rantatie in Old Liminka and built in 1868. Vilho Lampi was a versatile artistic talent. In addition to fine art, he also wrote texts, poems, speeches, and aphorisms, and practiced oration and acting. Lampi also received international recognition and his works have also been displayed in exhibitions abroad. The life of the Liminka-born painter ended in 1936 in the river Oulujoki.
