Research Center at the Universidad del Pacifico / CIUP 2 / 3 The mission of the Research Center at the Universidad del Pacifico (CIUP) is to contribute to the country s development and democratization, in an increasingly diverse and interconnected world. We fulfill this mission by generating knowledge about the national and international context; producing viable proposals for change; and participating in public debate and policy formation. We contribute to forming new generations of professionals and leaders who have a vocation for excellence and social responsibility.

Research in Peru is often lost in the whirlwind of the information era. In this context, we believe that generating knowledge through research is extremely important. CIUP s work proposes concrete solutions to the problems that affect the common good. a new generation of researchers, is the driving force behind our work. Our consultancies also contribute to Peru s progress given that CIUP s services are often required by public institutions, private companies and international cooperation agencies. It is important to understand that this spirit has no meaning without the aforementioned p. 42 Area of Regulation, Infrastructure and Competition p. 40 {CONSULTANCY} Our prestigious research team s commitment to society, along with our dedication to forming concepts, which ensure that our work contributes to the country s development. p. 45 Other Researchers

Interview with Cynthia Sanborn Director CIUP Research Center at the at the Universidad del del Pacifico / CIUP / CIUP 6 / 76 / 7 The progress behind the research CIUP s fundamental objectives include achieving a diversity of perspectives, training new generations of researchers and generating new ideas. The Universidad del Pacifico not only trains competent and ethical professionals: it also generates knowledge through its Research Center (CIUP), which strives to provide solutions to the country s problems. Its director, Cynthia Sanborn, provides some insight on the importance of CIUP in our society and what it means to conduct research in the 21st century. CIUP s research touches on a number of subjects. How is the institution structured? CIUP currently has six research areas. This structure allows us to cover different fields: ranging from macroeconomics to natural resources, international business and public service regulation. We conduct research from a variety of angles, including the social sciences, administration and other disciplines that are directly related with the University s purpose. What advantages are derived from the fact that the researchers are also UP professors? This ensures that our faculty are in permanent contact with reality. This reality is later complemented with classroom experience. Our research faculty work full time for UP and dedicate approximately half their time to CIUP. Each is expected to conduct research on one primary topic 1972 throughout the year. We also have associate researchers, research assistants and student interns. How do you choose research topics? Research topics are suggested by individual professors or teams. Work is directly related to each of their interests in specific issues. We belong to the University but are autonomous when it comes to defining our agenda. In the majority of our projects, the objective is to focus on understanding and analyzing a concrete problem. Is the current juncture important to CIUP s work? It s fundamental. CIUP has a very clear objective: contribute to the development of the region and the country. Our researchers are directed by reality rather than theory alone. Although some may be in the process of generating new theories, the majority are concerned with concre- te issues: poverty, budgets, international trade, etc. We are permanently concerned with what is going on in the country. A good example is Agenda 2011. What does this initiative consist of? Agenda 2011 was born of the recent electoral context. We developed a list of proposals to address eleven issues that we believe are very important to Peru. To The Research Center of the Universidad del Pacifico was created in summarize, the proposals describe real problems and how much it will cost to solve them. The profile of CIUP s researchers is highly varied. How is this reflected in their work? This is a very interesting point given that CIUP is sometimes associated solely with, for lack of a better term, neo-liberal professionals. Nevertheless, some of our professors believe that the State s role requires further development. There are a myriad of opinions on how to fight poverty or achieve greater equality. This pluralism contributes to generating a dialogue between different research efforts. Are there generational differences between researchers? Yes and this enriches our work. The main difference between us and other research centers is that we aim to generate knowled- ge while teaching new generations of researchers to take a reality-based approach to analyzing specific junctures. Some of our areas have changed over time to reflect changes in reality. When has this occurred? The Regulation Area changed some time ago and is now called Regulation, Infrastructure and Competition because our researchers began to study more and more topics related to highways, airports and how to make the country more competitive through infrastructure. Innovation is very important in research. How is this evident in CIUP s work? Innovation takes a number of forms, beginning with the perspective from which an issue is approached. We currently have a Literature professor who is analyzing problems in education through language and reading-writing skills. This angle is complemented by other research on education and economic policies. In another case, a sociologist who specializes in gender issues is working with a professor of business administration. Both are currently studying discrimination in the workplace. Another way to innovate is by varying the format. One of our researchers is working on a video. All of this gives our work a multi-disciplinary touch. What goals has CIUP set for the future? One of our goals in the future is to incorporate professionals associated with the new degree programs UP offers, including law and engineering. We would also like to have more associated researchers from abroad who can contribute new ideas. In this context, we will continue to form upcoming generations and conduct research on new topics that contribute to the country s progress.

8 / 9 Solutions that transcend _ CIUP conducts research that proposes solutions to different problems in the country. Its researchers generate knowledge through critical analysis and precise conclusions, which are later published in books, academic journals and news articles and disseminated to universities and other institutions throughout the world. Our works deals with Economics as well as Management and Development and uses tools from Sociology, Political Science, Law and the Humanities, which makes CIUP s approach truly inter-disciplinary.
