EMPYRO - introduction OBJECTIVE Design, built and operate a 25 MWth fast pyrolysis plant to produce simultaneously electricity, process steam and fuel oil from woody biomass. Demonstrate the use of pyrolysis oil in natural gas fuelled boiler for the production of process steam. Reference plant for BTG-BTL s Fast Pyrolysis Process. 7

EMPYRO key figures Biomass Clean, woody biomass; Operating permit also valid contaminated wood; Supply contracts covering period of 10 years. Particle size ~ 3 mm; Fast Pyrolysis Plant Capacity = 5 t biomass/hr (at moisture ~ 5 wt%) Production pyrolysis liquid = 3,2 t/hr Oil storage capacity = 250 m3 Steam production = 7,4 MWth internal use (1.6 MW) Steam export to AkzoNobel (5.8 MW) Electricity production (steam turbine) = 650 kwe Internal use (~ 40%) Excess to grid (~ 60%) 17
EMPYRO status Functional testing & hot commissioning of the plant completed in Q1-2015; First litres of oil produced in March Training of the new operators (6); Delivery of process steam to AkzoNobel started; Milestone > 1 million litres production achieved; Oil yield above design value of 65 wt%; Water content 22-24 wt%; Lower Heating Value ~ 16 GJ/ton; Night shift with just one operator; 18
Pyrolysis Oil Application 19
Pyrolysis Oil Application Pyrolysis oil will be co-fired with natural gas producing process steam. New natural gas fired steam boiler has been designed suitable to co-fire pyrolysis oil (Stork Industrial Services & Kaisec); Is global dairy company; Will be major launching customer for pyrolysis oil; Process steam used in milk powder process; Pyrolysis oil off-take agreement concluded for a period of 12 years (equivalent to ~ 200 million litres); Annual saving of 10 million m³ of natural gas. 100% back-up of natural gas (= guaranteed steam supply) Pyrolysis oil is transported by tank truck from Hengelo to Borculo (~ 30 km). 20

Summary Construction of a 25 MWth fast pyrolysis plant has been completed; Long-term contracts have been established for Biomass delivery (10 years); process steam off-take (12 years); pyrolysis oil off-take (12 years); Pyrolysis oil yield above design value of 65% and good quality one phase oil is obtained; Recently, co-firing of the pyrolysis oil with natural gas has started at FrieslandCampina in Borculo to provide process steam; Both the production and application of the fast pyrolysis oil complies with sustainability criteria as set in NTA8080. 28
