6 General characteristics of Fortum Otso bio-oil Fortum Otso (Otso) is bioliquid produced in fast pyrolysis process Raw material for Otso is sustainably produced forest wood chips and saw dust Fortum Otso characteristics: Completely outside food chain Sulphur free (<0,05%) LHV 15 MJ/kg Acidic (ph 2-3) Density; 1,2 tn/m3 Viscosity between heavy and light fuel oil CO 2 decrease even up to 90% compared with Heavy Fuel Oil 6

10 Fortum Otso production Fast pyrolysis bio-oil (Bio-oil) is produced by quickly gasifying and condensing raw material Fast pyrolysis technology is considered to be one of the most cost efficient ways of liquefying biomass Relatively simple process The needed heat in the process is produced with the process by-products High yield Fast pyrolysis oil production process can use several feedstock as raw material Production of bio-oil has been studied since 1970 s and plants in different sizes are located in the US and EU Fortum Joensuu is the first of its kind in the world to be integrated into CHP-plant 10
11 Heat production with Bio-oil Bio-oil is replacing fossil fuel oils in heat and steam production It can be used the same way as liquid fossil fuels Operating is simple and e.g. remote use is possible Maintenance needed is low compered e.g. to wood chips fired heat only boilers Customer investment that is needed to replace fossil heating oil with Bio-oil is relatively small Combustion of Otso causes signifantly lower sulphur emissions than HFO Also lower CO 2 emissions 11

14 The future of pyrolysis oil Fortum, UPM and Valmet are jointly developing technology to produce advanced biomass based fuels Target: To produce advanced high value lignocellulosic fuels, such as transportation fuels or higher value bio liquids. Idea: To develop catalytic pyrolysis technology for upgrading bio-oil and commercialize the solution. Name: The project is called LignoCat i.e. lignocellulosic fuels by catalytic pyrolysis Time scale: Duration is 5 years. The project is a natural continuation of the consortium s earlier bio-oil project together with the VTT Commercialising integrated pyrolysis technology
