7 Summary of VTT Fast Pyrolysis of Biomass VTT participates into three consequtive IEA Bioenergy feasibility assessments on liquid biofuels VTT laboratory work on fast pyrolysis started 1985 in collaboration with University of Waterloo Several Tekes and EU-projects since VTT innovation - Integrated fast pyrolysis of biomass 1996 A RDD project with VTT, Ensyn, Vapo, Wärtsilä, and Canadian and Finnish authorities during the 1990 s. Technology development with UPM, Metso, and Fortum (2008->) supporting pilot-scale operation at Metso/Tampere R&D Center and commercial demonstration at Fortum/Joensuu CHP-plant (Tekes BioRefine). 16 KiOR has established purchase agreements for the site s entire fuel output with Hunt Refining, Catchlight Energy (a joint venture between Chevron Corp and Weyerhaeuser Co), and FedEx Corp. Startup is scheduled for end of KiOR is construction its first commercial scale facility (500 dry tons of per day, about 100 MW feed), in Columbus, Mississippi. The facility will produce gasoline and diesel blendstocks from woody biomass employing catalytic pyrolysis & hydrotreatment. The investment cost of the facility is $220 million.

17 The tide turns for US energy flows Energy developments in the United States are profound and their effect will be felt well beyond North America and the energy sector. By around 2020, the United States is projected to become the largest global oil producer (overtaking Saudi Arabia until the mid-2020s) and starts to see the impact of new fuel-efficiency measures in transport. The result is a continued fall in US oil imports, to the extent that North America becomes a net oil exporter around 2030.
