HARDWARE LICENSING (DONGLE) USERS GUIDE HydroGeo Analyst (HGA) incorporates Hardware Licensing (or Dongles ), allowing you to easily install, transfer, and manage your license(s). As long as the dongle is plugged in to your computer s (or a computer on your network in the case of a network dongle) USB or Parallel port (depending on the type of dongle you received) when you start HGA, your software will work seamlessly. The HGA software installation includes all the necessary files to enable the use of your dongle. When you open HGA on your computer, the program will automatically search your computer for a dongle that contains a valid license for your product. If a dongle is not found on your computer (for example, if you have a network installation of HGA, and the dongle is attached to another computer), HGA will search your network for a dongle with a valid license. Please note that this search can take up to 30 seconds, depending on the size and speed of your network. During the search, HGA will pause, and there will be no activity until the search is completed. If no valid license is found (for example, if all licenses are already in use, or if no dongle is present due to network connectivity issues), HGA will display the following message indicating that it is running in demonstration mode. When operating in Demonstration mode, you are able to open and view existing projects, but you will not be able to Add, Delete, or Modify any records (changes will NOT be posted/saved), or create new projects. If you have started HGA in Demo mode, and then connected your dongle (or a license has become available), we recommend that you close and re-open HGA to refresh the license manager. HGA will periodically check for the presence of a dongle during its operation, however manually restarting the software is the quickest way to recognize the presence of a dongle with a valid license. If a dongle is accidentally removed (from either a Stand Alone or Network installation), HGA will revert to Demonstration mode until a dongle is reconnected, and the application is restarted If you are having difficulty with your licensing, please verify that you have a dongle attached to your computer, or to a computer on your network. Please also verify that you have a valid license available (i.e. that other machines are not running HGA and using all the licenses owned by your company).
If you continue to experience difficulties with your dongle, please contact Waterloo Hydrogeologic s Technical Support department at techsupport@waterloohydrogeologic.com. USING YOUR DONGLE IN A LOCAL (STAND ALONE) CONFIGURATION If you have purchased a 1-user Stand Alone version of HGA, simply plug your dongle into your computer before opening HGA. USING YOUR DONGLE IN A NETWORK CONFIGURATION If you have purchased a multi-user Network version of HGA, you must, in addition to installing HGA on the appropriate computers, install one copy of the License Manager Utility. The License Manager Utility is provided on the HGA installation CD-Rom (as shown in the screenshot below), and is designed to communicate with the dongle to determine how many licenses are available, and how many licenses are in use. The License Manager Utility can be installed on any computer that is connected to your network, and is accessible (through your network) by all computers running HGA. While you can install the License Manager Utility on a domain server, we recommend that you install the License Manager Utility on a workstation. Rebooting a workstation to reset the License Manager (as in the case of a license becoming locked due to the crash of a client computer running HGA) will not affect your domain services. Clicking the link to install the License Manager Utility will start the HASP License Manager Installation. Click Next> to proceed through the Welcome screen, and Agree to the License Agreement, then click Next>. When installing the License Manager Utility, you will be prompted to select between Application and Service. You should ALWAYS select the License Manager Service (nhrsrvice.exe). Then click Next> to proceed, and click Next> to select the Program Manager Group.
Select Yes when you are asked if you want to start the License Manager now. Then click the Finish button to complete the installation. Once you have installed the License Manager Utility, you may be asked to reboot your computer for all changes to take effect. Once you have rebooted, connect your network dongle to the
License Management computer, and then proceed with installing HGA on all the required computers.
GENERAL DONGLE issues The following is a list of Frequently Asked Questions concerning dongles. If your question is not addressed here, please feel free to contact our Sales department at Sales@waterloohydrogeologic.com. Q. What happens if I lose my dongle? A. Your dongle is a very important piece of hardware. If the dongle is lost, you will be required to pay 50% of the replacement cost of the software. Due to licensing policy issues, there will unfortunately be no exceptions to this replacement cost Q. What is the cost to obtain additional dongles for my software (for example, if I want to break up a 5-user Network license into a 3-user Network, plus 2 Stand Alone licenses)? A. Your software purchase includes the cost of a Stand Alone dongle (one dongle per license). Additional Stand Alone dongles cost US$95 per dongle, and Network dongles cost US$150 per dongle. Please note that your original dongle(s) MUST be returned to Waterloo Hydrogeologic, Inc. (using insured and traceable shipping) to avoid being charged the replacement cost of the software. Please Note: When shipping a dongle back to WHI, please indicate Product Return NOT FOR RESALE on the packing slip. WHI is not responsible for shipping charges or duties imposed. EXAMPLE: Changing from a 5-user Network license to a 3-user Network plus 2 Stand Alone licenses -In this case, you would have originally purchased a 5-user Network dongle. There would be no charge to remotely reprogram your Network dongle, and you would be required to pay US$95 for each of the two Stand Alone dongles, plus shipping charges. Q. What happens if I break my dongle, or the dongle stops working? A. The dongle must be shipped back to WHI so it can be tested and examined. The hardware manufacturer, EAladdin, honors a limited warranty for 12 months. If it is determined that the dongle is defective due to a manufacturing issue, WHI will send you a replacement dongle free of charge (shipping costs to and from WHI will be at the discretion of WHI). Please note that your original dongle(s) MUST be returned to Waterloo Hydrogeologic, Inc. (using insured and traceable shipping) to avoid being charged the replacement cost of the dongle. EAladdin will determine if the dongle was defective, or damaged by abuse or misuse. Damage by abuse or misuse will result in a replacement charge based on the dongle cost (US$95 for Stand Alone dongles, and US$150 for Network dongles, plus all shipping costs to and from both WHI and EAladdin). Q. What if I lose my dongle, pay for the replacement, and then find my lost dongle?
A. You will have 30 days from purchase of the replacement dongle to return the dongle for a refund. Dongles must be shipped back to Waterloo Hydrogeologic, Inc. (at the user s expense) using insured and traceable shipping. Please Note: When shipping a dongle back to WHI, please indicate Product Return NOT FOR RESALE on the packing slip. WHI is not responsible for shipping charges or duties imposed. Q. What if I want to exchange my current dongle? E.G. When I purchased HGA, I had the Windows NT operating system (and therefore used a Parallel port dongle), but I have since upgraded to Windows XP, and want to use a USB dongle) A. The original dongle must be shipped back to WHI (at the user s expense, using Insured and traceable shipping). A new dongle may be obtained by paying the cost difference (if any) between the two dongles, plus shipping for the new dongle. Please Note: When shipping a dongle back to WHI, please indicate Product Return NOT FOR RESALE on the packing slip. WHI is not responsible for shipping charges or duties imposed. Q. What happens if a dongle being sent back to WHI is lost during shipment? A. Unfortunately, if you did not use insured and traceable shipping, your dongle will be considered lost (please see the previous question regarding lost dongles). Q. What if I have other software that uses dongles? A. You can connect multiple dongles to your computer. Parallel dongles can be plugged together in a chain, while USB dongles can simply be plugged in to available ports. If you do not have enough ports for all your USB devices, you can purchase a port replicator that will expand the number of available USB ports.
