Signed Date Returning Student Scholarship Application Instructions This scholarship application contains scholarships for current undergraduate Trinity students who will be returning for the 2014-15 academic year. Because most of these scholarships are awarded according to academic major, the application is organized in sections by academic major. The final section contains other scholarships that are not major-specific. When applying for scholarships, use your anticipated grade level for the Fall 2014 semester. For instance, a student who is completing her sophomore year in the spring 2014 term should apply for junior-level scholarships. To apply for scholarships, simply check the box by each scholarship for which you would like to be considered. If a scholarship requires additional materials, like an additional special application*, an essay, or a letter of recommendation, it will be noted. Returning Student Scholarships Art Scholarship o Joann Leo Art: One $1000 one-time scholarship awarded to a junior or senior art major who plans to utilize his/her skills in an art field vocation, with a preference toward the field of art education. Biology Scholarship o Gary VanDyke: One $1100 scholarship is awarded to a returning rising junior or senior biology major that has a commitment to Christian stewardship and shows an interest in attending graduate school and/ or pursuing a career in ecology, botany, or environmental science. Business Scholarships BUSINESS SCHOLARSHIPS SPECIAL APPLICATION REQUIRED for these scholarships, available online o Janet Andre Bootsma Women in Business: Two $2250 awards given to students pursuing a degree leading to a career as a woman in business. o Henry and Karen Doorn: Two renewable $2700 scholarships available to accounting students entering their junior year. A minimum 3.3 cumulative GPA required. o David Koole Memorial: A one-time award of $1000 is available to a rising senior business major with a minimum GPA of 2.5. o John W. Kooyenga Business: A $1300 one-time award given to a senior accounting or business major with a minimum 3.0 GPA. Chemistry Scholarship o Luke and Pauline Schaap Science: One $1300 award is available for a rising junior or senior science major. Preference will be given to a chemistry student, as well as those with financial need. Student must posess a minimum 3.0 GPA and demonstrate Christian integrity and commitment. Communication Arts JOURNALISM SCHOLARSHIP SPECIAL APPLICATION REQUIRED for this Scholarship, available online. o Mary Beth Bootsma Memorial: Two awards of $2250 are given annually to rising junior or senior students interested in journalism and communication arts, with preference given to women. A special application is required, available online. Computer Science/ Math/Math Education Scholarships o Rich Kooy: One $1000 award is available to a computer science, math, or math education major with strong academics, with preference given to a rising sophomore. o Henry and Minnie Liepitz Memorial: One $1000 award is available for a rising junior or senior mathematical science major with a minimum GPA of 3.0 who plans to pursue graduate work in the field of mathematical science. Financial need is not required to receive this award. Education Scholarships EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIPS SPECIAL APPLICATION REQUIRED for these scholarships, available online o Butch and Dot Bruinius Scholarship: One $1000 scholarship awarded to a junior or senior special education major. o Education and Adult Studies Intern Teaching: One award of $250 is available to two students annually, one in the traditional program and one in the adult studies program; students must be teaching during the fall or spring of the next academic year. o Edwin Gabrielse Memorial Scholarship: One $1000 one-time award given to a rising junior or senior from Wisconsin who is majoring in special education or social work. Preference will be given to those with a diagnosis on the autism spectrum, and then to those that seek to work in the social work or special education field with those that have autism. Submit a short essay describing your personal experiences with autism, or why you chose to study in your major. o Dennis and Jeni Hoekstra: A $1300 award is available to a rising junior or senior education major. Submit an essay on why you would like to work in the education field in the inner city or in a Third World country.
o Ben Hofman Memorial: A one-time award of $1300 is available to a rising junior or senior special education major who demonstrates financial need. o Tom J. Krygsheld Memorial: A $1200 renewable award is available to a rising junior or senior education major planning to teach mathematics or one of the natural sciences at the junior or senior Christian high school level. o Ellyn Lubbers Special Education Teaching: Two renewable awards of $1600 given to juniors and seniors enrolled in the special education program. o Clarence Solle Memorial: Two $1000 scholarships are available to rising senior education majors with a minimum GPA of 3.0 who plans to teach in a Christian elementary school. o Char Sytsma Memorial: Two $1000 awards will be given to a rising junior or senior special education major. Submit a short essay on your love for people and why you want to teach in the special education field and one recommendation from a leader in your community. (Preference given to students who have a desire to teach at Elim Christian Schools.) o Roger & Gerrie Triemstra Center for Special Education: Two awards of $1000 are given to rising junior or senior education majors with a 3.0 GPA or better, with preference given to special education majors. o Ed VanderWeele Memorial: One $1200 scholarship is available to a rising junior or senior who is accepted into the teacher education program, exerts positive Christian influence among peers, and shows high potential for success. o Vander Ark Family: An award is given annually to a rising junior or senior student teacher in the teacher education program. o Woo Family: Two $1000 awards given to applicants who demonstrate a heart for Christian education, a love for one another, and a passion for ethnic diversity. A 3.0 cumulative GPA or higher required. English Scholarship o Gerda Bos English: An award of $500 is available to a rising junior or senior education student with a major or minor in English and who demonstrates academic ability, Christian qualities, and service to the College community. Music Scholarship o Karen L. Buikema: One $1100 award given to a rising junior or senior majoring in music, preference given to students with minimum 3.0 GPA and who are enrolled in organ instruction. Nursing Scholarships special application may be required, available online. o Community Foundation of Northwest Indiana, Inc.: Two $1250 awards will be given to rising junior nursing students who maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA, are from Northeast Illinois or Northwest Indiana, and demonstrate financial need. o Nancy Drenth Nursing: Two awards of $1000 each will be given to a rising junior and senior in the nursing program who demonstrate need and have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0. o Gary & Cheryl Ericks Nursing Scholarship: Two one-time awards of $2000 are awarded each year to rising juniors and seniors in the nursing program with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0. Financial need, Christian commitment, and a goal-oriented work ethic are considered. Preference will be given to students from Michigan. o Elizabeth Anne Hoelzel Memorial: A one-time award of $1000 is available to a rising senior nursing student who demonstrates compassion and skill in caring for patients. o Hoitenga-Roelofs Nursing: One $1250 award is available to a rising senior with a nursing cumulative GPA of 3.0 who shows commitment to nursing as a life-long calling to serve Jesus Christ through competent and compassionate service to people of all cultures. Submit a 200 word essay describing your commitment to nursing as a lifelong calling to serve Jesus Christ through competent and compassionate service to people of all cultures. o Dr. Donna Ipema Compassion Nursing Award: Reflecting the life and passion of Dr. Donna Ipema, this $1000 scholarship recipient will have demonstrated compassion for others, will have academic accomplishments in nursing (GPA), will demonstrate financial need, and will have future plans that include graduate school. Submit an essay describing how you meet these criteria.
o Harry and Barbara Kampenga: One $2400 award given each year to a rising junior or senior from the southeast Wisconsin area who has a current 3.0 GPA. Preference will be given to a student majoring in the nursing or education program. The scholarship will be awarded by the head of the nursing or education department. o Alf and Marion Larsen Memorial Nursing Leadership: A $1600 scholarship is awarded annually to a rising senior nursing student who demonstrates peer leadership, professional excellence, and Christian witness in the clinical setting. Submit a 200 word essay describing your leadership behaviors in nursing practice, your involvement in nursing related activities, and your Christian witness in professional and personal life. o Jay C. Mol Memorial Nursing: One renewable $2500 award is given to assist rising junior and senior nursing students that exemplify the characteristics of Mr. Mol: including high morals, dedication to serving others, and a strong work ethic. To apply, complete a special application (available online) and submit two teacher recommendations, an essay, an unofficial transcript, and a list of extracurricular/volunteer activities. o Nelson Sterken Memorial: One renewable $1000 scholarship given to a female junior or senior nursing student. Political Science Scholarship Political Science o Jon Cuperus Memorial: One $600 award is available for a rising junior or senior student who demonstrates a genuine Christian commitment to the field of political science. Psychology Scholarships o Psychology Faculty-Student Collaboration: One $2000 scholarship awarded to a psychology major entering his or her sophomore, junior, or senior year who submits a proposal in collaboration with psychology faculty members. To apply, complete a special application available online. o Department of Psychology Honors: Two $1000 scholarships awarded to psychology majors entering his or her sophomore, junior, or senior year. Recipients must have earned a B grade or higher in Psychology 200. Social Work Scholarship o Howard and Verna De Haan Family Social Work: Five $500 awards are available to rising junior and senior social work students who demonstrate a commitment to working toward social justice through advocacy and leadership efforts. A minimum 3.3 GPA is required. Theology Scholarship o Don Sinnema Honorary Research Scholarship: One $500 one-time scholarship is awarded annually to a junior or senior Theology or Church Ministry major or minor with proven excellence in their academic record. Applicants must submit a scholarly research project proposal. For detailed requirements for the proposal, contact Dr. Thianto. Other Scholarships o Cross-Cultural: Up to five awards are available to continuing Trinity students who plan to participate in a cross-cultural summer ministry. To apply, complete the SA and submit a special application available online. o FIHE/UPS Scholarship: One award of $2684 awarded to full-time students who are US citizens, who demonstrate financial need, and who are either first-generation college students, come from a low-income family, is from an ethnic minority, or is a recent immigrant. Recipient is required to send a thank you note to jfuller@acifund.org. o Carol and Henry Kamp/Edith and Clarence Schemper Organ: One scholarship of $1600 is awarded to a rising junior or senior each semester who shows Christian commitment and contribution to church organ music programs, as well as the Trinity organ music program. You need not be a music major, but you must have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5. You must prepare and perform a major Bach work and one other contrasting piece, and audition for the scholarship the previous semester in front of a jury examination committee. Organ lessons are required for all scholarship recipients.
Other Scholarships continued o Bassam Michael Madany: One $1600 non-renewable award is available to a rising sophomore, junior, or senior with financial need and who shows Christian commitment; preference given to an international student with high academic standards. o Peter and Yvette Madany Service: Two $1000 awards are available to exemplary juniors or seniors to defray the costs of serving in a community outreach project, whether locally or abroad. To apply, submit an essay describing the project, including location, start date, duration, and objective. o Student Memorial: A $2800 non-renewable award is available to a returning rising junior or senior of outstanding Christian character. o Returning Student Initiative Fund: $1000 awards are given to rising sophomores or juniors who are in good academic standing who are experiencing economic challenges, particularly those related to an unforeseen financial hardship. To apply, complete the special application available online. o Robert W. and H. Christine McCrory Memorial: A $1100 award will be given to a foreign-born student who has a cumulative GPA of 3.0, with preference given to those of Asian descent. Further preference will be given to sophomores, and then to psychology or education majors, but all grade levels and majors are encouraged to apply. Submit a 300 word essay titled The Integration of My Major and Mission (Calling). o Gerard and Harriet Van Groningen Presidential: One $1400 scholarship awarded to a junior or senior planning to work in a Christian education or church and ministry leadership. Preference will be given to international students and those with financial need. Submit an essay reflecting on your calling to Christian education or church and ministry leadership. o Maurice Vander Velde Junior Scholar: Up to five awards of $1350 each are awarded to rising juniors or seniors to pursue advanced research in their majors, under the guidance of faculty members; see Dr. Craig Mattson for more information. o A. Montgomery Ward Scholarship: One $2000 one-time award given to US citizens with a 3.0 GPA with moderate family income and financial need of at least $5,000. Recipient is required to send a thank you note to jfuller@acifund.org. o Michelle and Peter S. Willmott Minority Student Leadership Fund: One award of $2750 given to a freshman or sophomore minority student.
