INTRODUCTION Dear Students, Welcome to North Platte High School. Whether you are new to the district, or new to high school, we are glad you are here. We hope that this handbook will assist you as you make important decisions regarding your future. By 2020,the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education has set the goal of every Missouri student graduating high school college and career ready. A critical component of this is the Personal Plan of Study. This handbook will assist you as we work together to maintain your Personal Plan of Study. We will revisit and update the Personal Plan of Study yearly or more often if needed. This guide should be used to help you to reach and accomplish your educational and career goals. It is a good idea to: Review all requirements for graduation Read information about career paths Read course descriptions Work with Mrs. Justus to complete and maintain a Personal Plan of Study (typically done around class registration time). Grade Placement and Credit Information Classification of grade level will be made according to units of credits earned at the beginning of each school year. A+ Program Students that meet the criteria identified below, as well as any other criteria that may be established by the state in the future, and the Missouri General Assembly continues to fund the program, students may be eligible for two years of tuition at a Missouri community college or vocational school. Complete and sign an A+ Agreement and turn it into Mr. Matt Attend A+ school for three consecutive years prior to graduation Graduate with an overall GPA of 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale Graduate with a 95% percent cumulative attendance record for grades 9-12 Perform 50 hours of unpaid, approved, academic tutoring or mentoring Perform 15 hours of volunteer service that benefits the school/community Maintain a record of good citizenship and avoid the use of alcohol and unlawful drugs. Complete the FAFSA after January 1 st of your senior year Register with the Selective Service, if required to do so. Attend a Missouri community college or postsecondary vocational/technical school on a full-time basis and maintain a GPA of 2.5 or higher Score Advanced or Proficient on the Algebra I EOC (End of Course) exam (starting with the class of 2015). To maintain ongoing eligibility after high school, a student must: Attend a public community college or vocational/technical school on a full-time basis. Maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher Make a good faith effort to secure Federal Aid by completing the FAFSA each year. HOW DO I BECOME AN A+ STUDENT? Get a copy of the A+ guidelines and contract from Mr. Matt or Mrs. Justus. Read the guidelines and complete the Program Agreement. As long as you meet all of the requirements you should receive the A+ scholarship. It is a good idea to sign up early for the program so that you have time to complete all of the requirements. Even if you believe that you will be going to a four year college or into the military, or if you believe you won t be going to college at all this is a good opportunity. You are not required to use the scholarship, but it does provide a great opportunity for students if they so choose to utilize it. WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF BECOMING AN A+ STUDENT? Students graduating with A+ designation may be eligible for two years of tuition grants to attend any public Missouri community college or vocational/technical school. As a full time-student. An A+ student may be eligible for scholarships from four-year colleges and universities. The tuition grants may be available to the A+ student for up to four years after high school graduation. Students graduating from a two-year school may be eligible for transfer scholarships to four-year colleges and universities. 6 P age

Dual Credit The North Platte School District offers dual credit courses through area colleges. Dual credit may be earned in high school and college if the student meets enrollment guidelines. The student must apply to the college, be accepted, and pay a reduced fee for college credit to be awarded. At the conclusion of their senior year, students should request that their college transcript be sent to the college they will be attending. Students should make sure that any dual credit course they take will transfer to the college they plan to attend. Assessment Information ACT (American College Testing Program) The ACT is a combination of four exams consisting of English, math reading, and science reasoning. The ACT is required by many colleges as part of the application process for admission. This is the most commonly used college entrance exam in the mid-west. SAT The SAT is a standardized test for college admissions. It is predominately used by coastal schools. ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) Juniors at North Platte High School take the ASVAB. It measures students strengths and potential for future success. The ASVAB also provides career information for various civilian and military occupations and is an indicator for success in future endeavors including college, vocational school and or the military. EOC (End of Course Assessment) End of Course Assessments are required the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education for various high school level classes. North Platte tests in Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, English I, English II, American History, Government and Biology. PLAN (Preliminary American College Testing Program) The PLAN is a shorter version of the ACT that is given to sophomores. It provides practice for the ACT test. It includes tests in English, math, reading and science reasoning. It also contains a career interest inventory. It is very helpful in assisting sophomores as they start post-secondary planning. PSAT The Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test is a standardized test that provides practice for the SAT, and gives students a chance to enter National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) scholarship programs. Missouri Connections Missouri Connections (www.missouriconnections.org) is a web-based resource for exploring career interests, identifying interest areas and researching occupations. It provides information on career paths, clusters, pathways and career options. Students can create a portfolio with their educational plans, resumes and more. 8 P age
