FUNDAMENTALS OF THE POLYMERS BUSINESS A detailed, fast-paced two-day course covering polymer industry fundamentals from production technologies and applications to market dynamics, pricing, key drivers and regional market trends. Day 1 REGISTRATION AND Welcome and introduction Understanding petrochemicals and polymers What are petrochemicals and where do they come from? An overview of polymer chemistry explaining what are monomers/polymers, thermosets vs thermoplastics Polymer feedstocks explained What are the key polymer feedstocks The main routes to making ethylene and propylene The other raw materials butadiene, styrene The ethylene, propylene and butadiene value chains explained Introduction to polyethylene Brief history and early days of development Different types of polyethylene and key applications LDPE, LLDPE and HDPE properties, production process, technologies and grades/applications Latest developments Overview of global and regional supply/demand, Key end-use segments Major demand drivers LUNCH Introduction to polypropylene Brief history and early days of development Production process, catalysts, technologies, types of PP, grades/applications Latest product developments Overview of global and regional supply/demand, Key end-use segments Major demand drivers Introduction to PVC Brief history and early days of development Production process - ethylene and carbide routes to making PVC Different grades of PVC and their applications Overview of global and regional supply/demand, Key end-use segments and demand drivers Building the value chain Delegates will work in groups to put together the ethylene and propylene chain covering all derivatives. Plastics processing fundamentals The different polymer properties (MFI, etc) and their role in processing Introduction to major processing techniques and their applications (injection moulding, extrusion, blow moulding, thermoforming) Role of additives Substitution and inter-polymer competition Wrap-up and Objectives for Day Two WHY attend THE FUNdaMENTALS OF THE POLYMERS BUSINESS COurSE? A sustained period of low oil prices is impacting polymer markets, prices and profitability. Understanding the fundamentals of polymers business is therefore crucial, particularly during challenging periods when markets are more volatile. Market players in a variety of roles including analysts, marketing and sales functions, purchasing and planning will all benefit from an enhanced understanding of key raw materials, production processes, applications, how markets function and regional differences. Some key questions to consider Exactly how does the polymers market function and what factors drive prices? What are the key technical and commercial aspects of the various polymers? How are polymers converted into finished products? 2
Day 2 Welcome and recap of Day 1 Pricing and markets Key price drivers Cost structure, influence of feedstock costs and margin analysis How pricing is assessed Differences in markets and price mechanisms across Asia, Europe and The Americas China and its influence on markets The role of futures markets in China and its influence on the physical market The world of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) PET and polyester Early days of development Production process Grades and applications Overview of global and regional demand/supply, Key end-use segments and demand drivers Recycling and its importance in the PET business lunch Styrenics - polystyrene (PS) and acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) Brief history and early days of development Production process and technologies Different grades and their applications Overview of global and regional demand/supply, Key end-use segments and demand drivers Major shifts in the PS business Quiz Delegates will work in groups to answer questions. The purpose of this quiz is to reinforce learning from the presentations. Industry trends and company strategies Key business drivers Major shifts in company strategies Investment trends and changes to trade flows Growth opportunities and challenges Environmental issues Course Summary End of seminar The course content is regularly updated to reflect ongoing market changes and is an ideal choice for those seeking an up-to-date and cohesive view of the polymers industry, either as an introduction or a refresher. On completion of this two-day course, you will benefit from all of the following: A non-technical overview of polymers production including technologies and applications Understanding of commodity polymer markets including trends and regional differences Insight into pricing, demand and price drivers A view of the current market: global supply and demand and key players This course gave me a good understanding of the industry and the mindset of players 3
Our POLYMERS Course Leaders Paul Cherry Consultant, Officium Projects Paul has 20 years experience in the petrochemical industry working for Lyondell Basell and its predecessor companies, Basell, Montell and Shell Chemicals. From 2002 to 2010 he was based in Hong Kong and was responsible for supply chain and procurement activities in Asia, Africa, the Middle East and the Indian Subcontinent. After leaving Lyondell Basell, Paul has been working with Officium Projects, a company offering consulting and engineering services to the petrochemical industry as well as the ICIS training business. Paul has a Bachelor of Applied Science degree and Doctorate of Philosophy majoring in polymer science both from the University of Melbourne. Peter Taffe Course Director, ICIS Peter Taffe, a chemical engineering graduate from the University of Leeds in Britain, has over 30 years of experience in analysing the chemicals industry. Peter has been part of ICIS training since its inception. Besides training, Peter is also part of the ICIS Data and Analytics team, which provides context to pricing and news. His present position is Intelligence Editor with responsibilities including Plants and Projects and Chemical and Company Intelligence reports. The Chemical reports look primarily at the market and pricing dynamics of individual petrochemicals as well as the processes used to make them. He is also involved in generating weekly margin reports such as those on ethylene, polyethylene and polypropylene. Choose ICIS with confidence ICIS is the leading provider of petrochemical market intelligence around the globe. Choosing to train with ICIS means you ll benefit from regularly updated course content as well as training and insight from experienced industry specialists. ICIS trainers are all experienced industry professionals who share with delegates their up-to-date knowledge of the marketplace and provide a comprehensive understanding of the industry. Content is not heavy on chemistry and technology but geared towards the needs of delegates in more commercially focused roles.
