2 Management Course Stage 1 The Solicitors Regulation Authority s compulsory course which all solicitors below 3 years PQE must attend. The course covers the basic principles in areas such as: Understanding the environment for legal practice Managing law firm finance Client care and managing people (organisation, motivation, delegation and dealing with underperformance) This case study based course has been fully updated to include details of the latest SRA Handbook, Legal Services Act and Alternative Business Structures. It is delivered by CLT s highly experienced trainers who have extensive training and practical law firm management experience. Events are run with limited numbers and will allow you to take away practical advice which can be applied at your firm immediately. Management Course Stage 1 satisfies the training requirements for the SRA Code of Conduct (supervision of a practice) and counts towards the supervision skills requirements of the Legal Services Commission Specialist Quality Mark Standard. It can be followed by Management Course Stage 2. CLT also offer separate tailored Management Course Stage 1 courses for in-house lawyers and local government lawyers. Trainer: Geraldine Gee, LLM, FRSA, Solicitor. Since qualifying in 1994, Geraldine has practised in local government and the public sector and is a monitoring officer and senior manager. 4 Management Course Stage 2 Developing the Manager The need for effective management in law firms has never been more crucial than in today s rapidly changing environment. As your career as a solicitor develops your ability to manage becomes more and more crucial. If you have or are hoping to have additional management responsibilities as a senior solicitor or new partner in private practice this is the course for you. This course covers strategic practice disciplines and the skills and personal qualities sought in a successful manager and partner. The course covers the basic principles in areas such as: Business planning Drivers of profitability Marketing Role and responsibilities of a manager Developing leadership skills The Solicitors Code of Conduct Practice Rule 13 makes the effective running of the firm a matter of professional conduct, requiring partners to be able to produce evidence of a systematic and effective approach to management. This course will help you meet this requirement. CLT also offer separate tailored Management Course Stage 2 courses for in-house lawyers and local government lawyers. Trainers Peter Scott is a solicitor and former managing partner of Eversheds London and European offices. He acts as an adviser and coach to many law firms in the UK and abroad in relation to their financial, strategic, performance, compliance and business development issues. Previously head of a national solicitors network, he is now concentrating on risk management. Damon is also a Law Society approved adviser for the Lexcel standard.

6 Management Courses for In-house Counsel Stage 1 for In-house Lawyers This course caters for those who have trained or moved in-house and are required to take Management Course Stage 1. Topics to be covered include: Understanding your client Building relationships Managing colleagues and yourself Managing legal services Trainers Mark Prebble worked for 20 years as an in-house lawyer for companies in the UK and Europe. He then set up Lawyers in Business, an organisation dedicated to supporting and developing in-house lawyers. Emma Wilson, MA (Cantab), Solicitor, started her career at Allen & Overy before moving in-house where her roles included Legal Director of Hasbro Europe, Legal Director of Peregrine Systems and Head of Legal for PA Consulting Group. London 14 October Management Skills for Leaders of In-house Legal Teams This course meets the needs of those managing an in-house team or have aspirations to do so. It complements Management Course Stage 1 for In-house Lawyers which provides an orientation for inhouse lawyers in the early stages of their career (and was previously called Management Course Stage 2). If you are new to a management role this course will provide you with the training you need or, for the experienced manager, it will provide calibration that you are on the right track or a stimulus to adapt your approach. Trainers Anthony Inglese was the top lawyer at five government departments before his retirement.
