Course Objective: The microstructure and the relationships between different mechanical properties of low, medium and high-alloy steels which take an important place in industry are the fundamentals of this course. The aim of the course is to familiarize the student with the structures and properties of the major steel alloys and their applications so that they will be able to make a decision for processing and developing of steels, and selecting a material for engineering designs and applications. The course will also provide a base for in depth study and research in the area. Learning Outcomes: 4 5 6 7 To be able to discuss classification and the general properties of steels and make correct and appropriate use of technical terminology in these subjects (areas) To be able to identify the required specifications of steels in definite applications To be able to explain the relationships between structure, properties and processing in steels To be able to evaluate the strengthening mechanisms and relationships between them and the effects on the other properties in steels To be able to design and determine the processing route for the steels with required properties by accounting the functions and variations of the related parameters for the production and processing To be able to select appropriate steel for a definite engineering application To be able to present a research realized theoretically and/or experimentally and its results about steels, in written and verbal (oral) ways To be able to acquire the required knowledge and professional experimentation accumulation for applying and developing the theoretical background on the materials-production-product-performance relationships Learning and Teaching Strategies: Lecture, presentation, discussion, quiz and assignment Assessment Methods: Name Code Calculation formula Midterm MD Wire: 0 45 7 7 Fax: 0 45 7 7 Access: http://www.fbe.deu.edu.tr
