Checking IE Settings, and Basic System Requirements for QuestionPoint This document covers basic IE settings and system requirements necessary for QuestionPoint. These settings and requirements apply to BOTH LIBRARIAN AND PATRON computers. Use this guide to: Check that your settings are correct, if you encounter problems using the software Confirm that your computer meets the basic system requirements Check Your IE Settings QP has an online guide which includes screen shots of some of the following steps: http://www5.oclc.org/questionpoint/chat_setup.pdf Instructions for Internet Explorer 6 For Internet Explorer 7 instructions, see page 3 Adjust Basic Internet Settings 2. Go to Tools > Internet Options > Settings (under Temporary Internet Files ). 3. Make sure that Check for newer versions of cached pages on every visit to the page is selected. 4. Ensure Amount of disk space to use is set to 1 MB. [Higher settings are fine. However, if you notice slow performance during cobrowse, try reducing this back down to 1 MB.] 5. Click OK to return to the Internet Options dialog. 6. Click OK to close the Internet Options dialog. Adjust Security Settings 1. In the Internet Options dialog, click on the Security tab. 2. Under Select a Web Content Zone to specify its security settings, click the globe icon marked Internet 3. Under Security level for this zone, set the slider to Medium. 4. Click on the Custom Level button. 5. Under Allow status bar updated via script, choose Enable. 6. Click OK to return to the Internet Options dialog.
Adjust Popup Blocker(s) and Cookies 1. In the Internet Options dialog, click on the Privacy tab. 2. Under Pop-up Blocker, remove the check in the box for Turn on Popup Blocker. 3. You may have other pop-up blockers running on your computer, such as those included with the Google and Yahoo toolbars. Please disable those as well. (Look at the toolbar to find the popups button) 4. Click on the Advanced button. 5. Under Advanced Privacy Settings, check Override automatic cookie handling. 6. Check Always allow session cookies. 7. Click OK to return to the Internet Options dialog. Adjust HTTP settings 1. In the Internet Options dialog, click on the Advanced tab. 2. Under Settings, scroll down until you see your options for HTTP 1.1 Settings. 3. If you use a proxy server between your workstation and the internet, select Use HTTP 1.1 through proxy connections. 4. Else, select Use HTTP 1.1. 5. Do not select both options. 6. Click OK to to close the Internet Options dialog. Make sure Java Sun or Microsoft Virtual Machine is Installed You must have either Java Sun or Microsoft Virtual Machine loaded on your computer. Java Sun is preferred. To download Java Sun: 1. Log in to QuestionPoint. 2. Download Java Sun from the Download section on the right side of the My QuestionPoint page. Adjust Java Sun or Microsoft Virtual Machine Settings For Java Sun: 2. Go to Tools > Internet options > Advanced. 3. Scroll down to Java (Sun). 4. Make sure the box that says Use JRE 1.5.0_06 for <applet> (requires restart) is checked. If necessary, restart your computer. 5. Restart IE. If your computer also has Microsoft VM installed, make sure the three VM settings below are all UNCHECKED.
For Microsoft Virtual Machine (only if you do not have Java Sun): 1. In IE, go to Tools > Internet Options > Advanced. 2. Scroll down to Microsoft VM. 3. Check that Java console enabled (requires restart) is not checked. 4. Check that Java logging enabled is checked. 5. Check that JIT compiler for virtual machine is checked. 6. Restart IE. Under Security level for this zone, set the slider to Medium high. 4. Click on the Custom Level button. 5. Under Allow status bar updated via script, choose Enable. 6. QuestionPoint System Requirements Requirements for librarian computers: o Operating system: Windows XP or 2000 o Browser: Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 or Internet Explorer 7. Cobrowse does not work with any other browser, including Firefox, Safari, etc. o A high speed connection to the internet o Adobe-Macromedia Flash Player: Version 7 is supported; Version 8 is recommended o A virtual machine (Java engine) from either Microsoft (version 1.1.4) or Sun Run Time Environment 1.4 or 1.5 Requirements for patrons wanting to cobrowse: o Windows XP or 2000, plus Internet Explorer 6 or Internet Explorer 7. o A virtual machine (Java engine) from either Microsoft (version 1.1.4) or Sun Run Time Environment 1.4 or 1.5 o A connection to the internet (the faster the connection the better the experience) If a patron does not want to cobrowse, and only use chat and page pushing, most other browsers will work.
