11th Sunday in Ordinary Time: June 14, 2015 It is the smallest of all seeds, and becomes the largest of plants, -Mark 4:26-34 Pastor Reflection We either pay attention to or ignore clock time as we play in the summer sun and note the earth s tilt and the lengthening of days. We live by time. We reckon time in seconds and minutes and hours, or we use bigger chunks like suppertime and summertime. God keeps another sort of time. God speaks to us of saving time, that is, the time of salvation. This sense of time is called kairos, and this time is always now, always present and available, always revealing, often surprising. This Sunday s readings alert us to the reality and import of God s time. Ezekiel and the Gospel of Mark remind us that our labor and our plotting and our planning rest in God. For God takes our smallest efforts and makes them great works. Paul points us to the harvest time, urges us to be watchful for its coming, and calls us to recognize that we must spend our time in pleasing God. Welcome PPAV Festa! Today is the P.P.A.V. Festa celebration. The events will follow 10:30 a.m. mass at St. Mary s. Welcome PPAV members and Festival Participants! St. Mary s Tabernacle You may notice that the tabernacle will absent from St. Mary s Church for about the next eight weeks. This is due to the work of a generous donor who has offered to have the tabernacle refinished. We look forward to the beautiful results upon its return. GOD S SAVING TIME We are a people who schedule, plot, and plan. Even in the summertime, we live in a world of adjusted clocks and tight schedules. Even in the summertime, we are obsessed with time, striving to own it, stretch it, or save it, if only to waste it in the end. Thank goodness that even in summertime we are reminded that God s salvation God s Saving Time is always at hand. Thank goodness that we are able to plot the time of summer in order to consecrate it and there encounter the God who orders not only all things, but all time as well. Whatever grows around us on the windowsill or in the garden, whatever appears fresh at the market, can remind us of plotting time and of the surprises of time s unfurling, the benevolent time of God s coming. That is why this time is as good a time as any to nurture the inner ear, the inner eye, and to move to the rhythm of God s saving time, God s surprising salvation. PASS A GOOD TIME In Louisiana s Cajun country, folks invite one another over to pass a good time, cher. We who are church are here to pass a good time, to tend to one another, to tend to God s good earth and our good gardens. We are here to be wide awake to God s saving time within all and through all. We pass a good time here but once, however, so we must take time to proclaim God s timeless faithfulness through summer s short nights and to sing of God s endless kindness at summer s fresh new dawn. We must give ourselves and others the time to grow and prosper under the watchful eye of God, who, as an old prayer reminds us, dwells with us in time beyond the region of thunder, in a land that is always peaceful, always serene and bright with... resplendent glory. Today s Readings: Ez 17:22 24; Ps 92:2 3, 13 14, 15 16; 2 Cor 5:6 10; Mk 4:26 34 HELP WANTED. George McCann School is accepting applications for a part-time Junior Kindergarten teacher. The Junior Kindergarten position is for the afternoon. We are also accepting applications for a part-time teacher for our 3 year old enrichment program. This position requires early education units. If you or anyone you know is interested in either of these positions, please pick up an application from the school office. (732-5831) CONGRATULATIONS, FR. JORGE ROBLES! With praise and thanksgiving to God, Bishop Armando X. Ochoa ordained Jorge Robles to the priesthood this past Saturday, May 30, in St. John s Cathedral. Our diocese is blessed to welcome Fr. Robles whose first assignment is to St. Anne / Holy Cross in Porterville. Please keep Fr. Robles and all our priests and seminarians in your prayers and remember to pray daily for vocations to the priesthood, especially here in our diocese. Priests Retirement Fund Collection Father s Day Weekend Once a year, we are asked to remember the retired priests who have served faithfully for many long years in the 90 parishes in our diocese. The annual cost of retirement continues to grow, as our compensation to the retired priests becomes more and more realistic. Serra Club Meeting June 22, 2015 6 pm at the Serra Center Guest Speaker: Fr. Rene Panlasigui Rej MARRIAGE & FAMILY LIFE Continued One of the topics addressed at the October 2014 Synod of Bishops on Pastoral Challenges to the Family in the Context of Evangelization, was the need for a new way of communicating Church teaching about marriage in contemporary society, using positive, elevating language that invites. As the synod s final report stated this need will not be solved by merely presenting a set of rules. Marriage, the report emphasized, is not a yoke, but a school of humanity (Guadium et Spes, 52), a model where God s deeper purpose for our lives is revealed. Today, we must reach people in fresh, new ways that address the real, concrete circumstances of their lives. First, how do we deal with the widespread reality of broken families people who are separated, divorced, or divorced and remarried as well as singleparent families? The words of Pope Francis are especially effective in these situations, as the report stated: The Church will have to initiate everyone priests, religious and laity into the art of accompaniment, the pope said, which teaches us to remove our sandals before the sacred ground of the other. Entering into pastoral dialogue with persons in broken families is needed, the report noted, to discern a constructive response, seeking to transform these challenges into opportunities that can lead to the fullness of marriage and family in conformity with the Gospel. Another powerful form of communication is the joyous witness of Christian couples. One such couple, Jeff and Alice Heinzen of Wisconsin, in testimony before the synod, said that in the age of the diminished family structure, many young people do not see the witness of married love that they experienced with their own parents. We must develop more robust and creative methods, they said, to share the fundamental truth that marriage is a divine gift from God, rather than merely a man-made institution. This will require us to examine the methods by which we teach our children about sexuality and the vocation of marriage and to include marriage in all programs that speak of the call by God to serve. PASTORAL COUNCIL MEETING Meeting Thursday, June 18th 6-8 P.M., St. Therese of Lisieux Room, St. Charles ALL ARE WELCOME! The Word of God, is also a critical source of life and spirituality for the family, as the synod noted. All pastoral work on behalf of the family must allow people to be interiorly fashioned and formed through the prayerful reading of Sacred Scripture. In addition, films and images of beauty often touch people in a place where maybe words don t touch them, according to Helen Alvare, professor of law at George Mason University and communications liaison for the November 2014 Humanum Colloquium, also held at the Vatican. The group focused on new ways speaking old truths. One theme was the beauty of self-gift of unselfishness, of avoiding ego, of gift, of service, of sacrifice, she said. In short, communicating about marriage should not be passive, flat, and rule-based. It should reflect the immense power and love of our Creator, and the fulfillment of the human heart and soul that a successful, Christian marriage achieves. Faith is no refuge for the fainthearted, but something which enhances our lives, Pope Francis, in his EncyclicalLumen Fidei, wrote. It makes us aware of a magnificent calling, the vocation of love. It is a question of allowing people to experience that the Gospel of the Family is a joy that fills hearts and lives, because in Christ we are set free from sin, sorrow, inner emptiness, and loneliness (Evangelii Gaudium, 1). In summary, methods recommended by the synod and others to strengthen communications about marriage include: Constructive language that invites and inspires the vocation of marriage as a powerful sign of Christ s presence and a school for spiritual growth. Renewal in the training of priests and other pastoral workers with a greater involvement of families. Enabling couples in troubled marriages to count on the assistance and guidance of the Church. Joyful witness of authentic love by families. Attention to the Word of God through scriptural readings. Images through art and film of the beauty of marriage. Preparation for marriage in the course of Christian Initiation. Communicating about marriage will be further addressed in the October 2015 Ordinary Synod on the vocation and mission of the family in the Church and in the contemporary world. Topics relating to the importance of family life will also be addressed at the World Meeting of Families in Philadelphia in September 2015. - See more at: http://www.cacatholic.org/policiesissues/marriage-and-family-life/language-invites-how -tell-good-news-about-marriageand#sthash.gd9dkmvl.dpuf Attention Parishioners Daily Mass at St. Mary s on Fridays reverted back to 7:00 a.m. beginning June 5th.
