LEADERSHIP STATEMENT FOUNDING DEAN CATERPILLAR COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY
THE OPPORTUNITY Bradley University - - an institution with rich tradition, national reputation, and vibrant academic and student life - - announces a nationwide search to recruit a Founding Dean to the newly endowed Caterpillar College of Engineering and Technology. Founded in 1897, Bradley University is an independent, privately endowed, coeducational institution. Bradley offers its approximately 5,000 undergraduate students more than 100 programs among five colleges: Foster College of Business Administration; Slane College of Communications and Fine Arts; Education and Health Sciences; Caterpillar College of Engineering and Technology; and Liberal Arts and Sciences. The University s nearly 1,000 graduate students are offered 14 graduate degrees in 31 academic areas including the Master s of Science in Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. Bradley employs approximately 350 FTE faculty and has an annual operating budget of more than $150 million. U.S.News & World Report recognized Bradley as the top Illinois university of its type and number six overall among Midwest universities providing a full range of undergraduate and master's programs. The $150 million Campaign for a Bradley Renaissance is nearing its successful completion and that has resulted in the construction of a new recreational center, two new athletic facilities, a new alumni center and the renovation and expansion of an academic building to house the College of Education and Health Sciences. The design phase is underway for the construction of a Business and Engineering Convergence Center which will house both the Caterpillar College of Engineering and Technology and the Foster College of Business Administration. THE POSITION Reporting to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Dean is the chief administrative officer of the college and is responsible for the effective execution of its academic mission. The new Dean will provide leadership and vision for the success of the engineering and technology programs, nurture and facilitate Bradley's new "Engineering/Business convergence" model, and serve as an important and contributing member of the university's academic affairs administrative team. The new Dean will understand and be supportive of the fact that the hallmark of engineering education at Bradley is applied research and design accomplished through faculty- student collaboration. An exciting dimension of the position relates directly to Bradley's new innovative "convergence model" for Engineering and Business education. Over the past few years, the University has been developing an educational concept for students majoring in Engineering and Business disciplines. The strategic focus is to prepare Bradley students with an added- value education that will make them more competitive in the workforce upon graduation. Through carefully crafted curricular and extracurricular activities, Bradley is providing engineering and technology students with exposure to business principles of profitability, supply line chains, developing a business plan, etc. (Conversely, Business majors are being given the opportunity to develop the ability to work alongside Engineers in understanding product
development, material use, and design engineering). This convergence knowledge should allow Bradley graduates to be more effective collaborators in the interactive engineering/business real world. Student participation in the convergence education program is optional and students will be able to select from four different levels of emersion activity. It s important to clarify that the convergence educational model is not attempting to turn engineering students into business students or vice versa, but rather train students for excellence in their own disciplines through best practice traditional methods, and then adding to that the ability to speak the language and successfully collaborate on applied projects with their counterparts, engineers or business professionals. Ultimately, this is what they will be required to do in the real world. To maximize the success of this educational initiative, as well as to significantly enhance all of our programs in the engineering and business colleges, Bradley is in the design phase of building construction for a new Business and Engineering Convergence Center. This will be a state- of- the- art facility that will house the entire Caterpillar College of Engineering and Technology and the Foster College of Business Administration. In addition, the building will have convergence space for students and faculty in the two colleges to work on interdisciplinary projects and hold interdisciplinary educational activities. The building will be transformation on the Bradley campus and will match the national distinction that we believe our academic programs will demonstrate. The incoming Dean will need to embrace the convergence knowledge educational model and be able to work closely with his/her counterpart Dean. It is anticipated that the best candidates for the post will have vision, the highest integrity, exemplary communication skills, a collaborative spirit, and a consensus- building leadership style. Reporting to the Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs, the Founding Dean of the Caterpillar College of Engineering will possess the following qualifications: Demonstrated strategic leadership with the ability to encourage innovation and collaboration across the college and to maintain excellence and promote high visibility of the college and its programs and students throughout the engineering and technology industry. Ability to be both a strong advocate for the Caterpillar College and a university leader. Evidence of success in fundraising or a willingness and capacity to engage in fundraising.
Personal integrity and a demonstrated commitment to the values of intellectual openness and transparency which will support the building of productive relationships with multiple constituencies within the college, university, and externally. Significant administrative experience with supervision, planning, and fiscal management responsibilities. Demonstrated record reflecting an understanding and commitment to the educational and cultural needs of diverse populations. National reputation based on scholarly, professional, creative, and/or research accomplishment and record appropriate to a tenured academic appointment at the rank of professor. Evidence of accomplishment as a teacher and/or mentor. A Ph.D. in an Engineering and Technology discipline. This is an exceptional opportunity for a distinguished leader to be interested in the Founding Dean position. THE COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY The College of Engineering and Technology has a long and successful history and has recently received a major gift of $30 million from Caterpillar Inc.
