Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering Developing Leaders of Innovation

At the U.Va. Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, our faculty and students serve society s need for sustainable and adaptive infrastructure.

Our Students At the U.Va. Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, we offer a curriculum that is comprehensive, well-balanced and unique. Our students build a foundation of knowledge in science and technology and develop the analytical skills necessary to lead the profession in the planning, design, analysis, construction, operation and maintenance of a sustainable infrastructure for the 21st century and beyond. Moreover, our students embark on their careers with a commitment to environmental integrity and with the skills and expertise to be leaders in preserving that integrity. Our faculty, who are frequently honored with teaching and research awards at the University and national levels, empower our students to become leaders in research. Our students participate in research on a global scale through the engineering thesis and faculty laboratories as well as a variety of exciting experiential programs, such as the minor in engineering business, the Science and Technology Policy Internship Program, study abroad programs, the Engineering in Context capstone experience, and interdisciplinary study within the School of Engineering and Applied Science and throughout the University. As a result, our students are prepared for success in many fields. While 75 percent of our graduates work within the field of civil engineering including consulting firms, government agencies and industry others pursue career paths in a wide variety of fields, such as education, information technology, marine engineering, aviation, law, environmental policy, planning and more. In addition, over 40 percent of our graduates pursue advanced degrees in fields including: engineering, law, business and management, medicine, environmental planning and policy, education, landscape architecture and applied mechanics.

Our Research The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering pursues a well-funded and diverse research agenda that is supported by internationally renowned faculty and state-of-the-art facilities. We collaborate with government agencies, private industry and foundations to identify and address research needs while developing new approaches for sustainable infrastructure development and the preservation of our natural environment. Our research program is further enhanced by our long-standing and ongoing partnership with the Virginia Transportation Research Council of the Virginia Department of Transportation. We have organized our research efforts into four key areas: environmental and water resources, structural engineering and solid mechanics, transportation engineering, and pavement engineering Environmental and water resources engineering applies basic principles of science and engineering to the analysis and design of systems that conserve, restore and protect our environment. Research in this area addresses a wide range of natural and human-made problems that exist in developing countries and highly technological societies alike. Our civil infrastructure systems thrust has three core program areas. The structural engineering and solid mechanics program uses state-of-the-art experimental, analytical and computational techniques for determining the response of complex structural configurations to mechanical, thermal and time-dependent loading. Our nationally renowned research program in transportation engineering at the Center for Transportation Studies is extensive, covering such areas as transportation systems planning and operations, highway safety and more. Finally, our pavement engineering track, offered jointly with the Virginia Transportation Research Council, allows students to work closely with research scientists and field engineers involved with pavements design and evaluation. Civil & Environmental Engineering at U.Va. Civil and environmental engineering applies science and technology to the planning, design, analysis, construction, operation and maintenance of infrastructure and the natural environment. These engineers improve upon our civil infrastructure systems to support basic human needs and enhance our quality of life. Founded in 1836 and imbued with the visionary ideas of University of Virginia founder Thomas Jefferson, today s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering promotes scientific inquiry in support of practical solutions for tomorrow s needs. The department s focus is centered on two main program areas: environmental and water resources engineering and civil infrastructure systems. Incorporating elements of sustainability, each program area features adaptive design with a strong focus on the incorporation of information technology. The department offers a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering as well as a minor in civil engineering. Graduate students pursue Master of Engineering, Master of Science and Ph.D. degrees in civil engineering with a concentration in either environmental and water resources or civil infrastructure systems. Within civil infrastructure systems students can specialize in transportation engineering, structural engineering and solid mechanics, or pavement engineering. Snapshot At the University of Virginia Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering More than 50 undergraduate students graduate with a degree in civil engineering each year Over 60 graduate students are pursuing advanced degrees in civil engineering, and most are financially supported by the department Approximately 15 full-time tenured and tenure-track faculty form the core of our more than 25 affiliated faculty members, a distinguished group that includes two members of the National Academy of Engineering Undergraduate and graduate students participate in innovative research activities and publish their results in archival, peer-reviewed science and engineering journals
