1 YOU WILL BE W E L C O M E D. DE PAUL UNIVERSITY MATH AND SCIENCE DEGREES FOR TRANSFER STUDENTS College of Liberal Arts and Sciences
2 MATH AND SCIENCE DEGREES FOR TRANSFER STUDENTS You ll feel right at home transferring to DePaul University s science and mathematics degree programs. You ll soon discover that a large percentage our undergraduates are transfer students like you. In fact, we welcome more than 1,200 transfer students each year. What s so special about DePaul? Let s find out. WHY TRANSFER TO DEPAUL? You ve made an excellent start on your college education. Now it s time to choose the college or university where you ll complete your four-year degree. There are many things to consider: reputation, available majors, costs, financial aid, location and more. But one single factor can give you the edge: the school s commitment to transfer students. That s where our expertise comes in. DePaul welcomes transfer students; they make up almost half of the university s undergraduate population. We have a staff of professional counselors who work with and only with transfer students, so we know how to give you the support you need to make a smooth transition. At DePaul, you ll gain a high quality, practical education that balances academic knowledge with professional preparation. You ll get the personal attention you deserve from our professors, many of whom are nationally or internationally known. After all, DePaul s student to faculty ratio is just 16 to 1, and the ratio is even smaller in many of our math and science degree programs. And, your personal network will include our 135,000 alumni, including about 60,000 living in the metropolitan area. Best of all, you ll get the value and prestige you want. DePaul was named by Careers and Colleges as one of 12 colleges that offer a top education at less-than-ivy-league costs. In short, DePaul can streamline your transition from community college through a four-year degree to a bright future. MATHEMATICS AND SCIENCE AT DEPAUL As a scientist or mathematician, you ll be in demand. Employers in Illinois and around the world are seeking mathematically and scientifically literate workers to conduct research, design products and services, and teach K-12 students. The need far exceeds the number of graduates. DePaul has embraced this challenge, which makes it a great place to complete your bachelor s degree. Both the faculty and the number of students enrolled in mathematics and science at DePaul have increased steadily over the past decade. Science majors will learn in The William G. McGowan Biological and Environmental Sciences Center, built in 1998, and the Monsignor Andrew J. McGowan Science Building, which opened in You'll gain handson research and laboratory experience with the latest equipment in these state-of-the-art facilities. The new buildings are complemented by a number of grant-funded initiatives, including the $1.1 million Science Talent Expansion Program. This partnership between DePaul and two City Colleges of Chicago is designed to increase the number of graduates in science and math, particularly minorities and women. Through this initiative, you ll be able to tap into peer networks, mentoring and research opportunities with scientific institutions in the metropolitan area. You ll find that hands-on experience and a commitment to undergraduate research and scholarship are hallmarks of DePaul s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (LA&S), which includes the math and science programs. DePaul s oldest and largest college, LA&S has 424 full-time faculty members in 38 undergraduate and 22 graduate degree programs.

4 The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences offers undergraduate degrees in: Biological Science Chemistry Clinical Laboratory Science Environmental Science Mathematical Sciences Physics MATHEMATICAL SCIENCE, MATHEMATICS & COMPUTER SCIENCE More than 30 full-time faculty members teach in these degree programs, which currently enroll over 90 students. You may choose to concentrate in pure mathematics, actuarial science, statistics, secondary education, mathematical computer studies or quantitative analysis/operations research. You have the option of completing a combined bachelor of science in mathematics and a master of science in applied mathematics or applied statistics in about five years. You may pursue a joint mathematics and computer science major, concentrating in theory, computational methods, graphics or an individualized plan of study. The faculty includes recognized experts in statistics and sampling theory, discrete mathematics and combinatorics, harmonic analysis, dynamical systems, abstract algebra and mathematics education. This degree prepares you for graduate study and careers in actuarial work; theoretical computer science; graphics and visualization; teaching; numerical analysis; information analysis; and many other areas. ALLIED HEALTH TECHNOLOGY You may concentrate in clinical laboratory sciences (medical technology), which is similar to the general biological sciences concentration. After completing the requirements for the baccalaureate, you ll enroll for a year of specialized study at a hospital associated with DePaul. You may concentrate in nuclear medicine technology or radiation therapy. In these 3+1 programs, you ll spend three years at DePaul and one year in an internship at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. DUAL-DEGREE PROGRAMS DePaul offers two five-year joint-degree programs with the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT), conveniently located just 30 minutes away via the L. You may earn a degree in chemistry from DePaul and a degree in chemical engineering from IIT. Or, you may earn a degree in physics with a concentration in engineering physics from DePaul and an engineering degree from IIT. In both cases, you'll supplement your DePaul degree with about 20 additional courses at IIT. WHAT WILL TRANSFER? DePaul is on a quarter system that requires 192 quarter credits for graduation. A limit of 66 semester/99 quarter credits can transfer from any community college to DePaul. A limit of 88 semester/132 quarter credits can transfer from a four-year college to DePaul. If you present more credits than can be transferred at the time of admission, you may use the excess credits to demonstrate that you have met certain requirements, but you will need to take additional courses to earn enough credit for graduation. ONLINE TOOLS DePaul offers an online Transfer Center that you can use to see how your existing credit will transfer and select future courses to take. The DePaul Course Equivalency Web site at depaul.edu/ transfercourses shows all of the courses that have been articulated, or matched, with DePaul courses, and how these courses will be accepted for credit in your intended major. The u.select Illinois system (formerly CAS) lets you see how courses at your college are accepted at any participating four-year university, including DePaul. It also provides you with academic program information, the requirements for DePaul s Liberal Studies Program, course descriptions, equivalency guides and more. TEACHING MATH OR SCIENCE All math and science departments collaborate with DePaul s School of Education to prepare students to become certified teachers of math or science at the early childhood, elementary and secondary levels.
5 RECOMMENDATIONS FOR TRANSFERRING INTO MATH OR SCIENCE DEGREE PROGRAMS If you plan to major in science, declare your major promptly in your freshman year, if possible. Most science degrees require a large number of introductory courses. If you don t take certain classes right away, it may take you longer than four years to complete your degree. You should complete two semesters or three quarters of calculus before you transfer so that you are prepared for the quantitative aspect of all science and math courses. If you transfer to DePaul and haven t taken calculus, take it as soon as possible. You have two options for completing the general education portion of your degree. If you transfer from a college that participates in the Illinois Articulation Initiative, or IAI, you may follow the IAI General Education Core Curriculum. After you arrive at DePaul, you ll need to take our mission-based courses in philosophy, religion and experiential learning and the capstone course in your major. Your other option is to use u.select Illinois (see previous page) to select courses that fulfill the liberal studies requirements in your planned major at DePaul. DePaul works with many community colleges to match individual courses with DePaul requirements, a process called articulation. To see if courses at your institution already have been matched, check u.select Illinois or the transfer course lists on the DePaul Web site (depaul.edu/transfercourses). Take introductory or core courses for the majors listed below at your college. You don t have to complete these core requirements before transferring, but we highly recommend you take equivalent courses whenever possible. Along with general education courses, we recommend that you take some of these core courses in your intended major: Biology and Clinical Lab Science: General Biology I, II, III; Ecology; Cell Biology; Genetics; Plant Physiology or Vertebrate Physiology. Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics: General and Analytical Chemistry I, II, III; or General Chemistry I and II; Mechanistic Organic Chemistry; Quantitative Analysis or Analytical Techniques; Physical Chemistry I, II; University Physics I, II, III. Environmental Science: General Biology I, II, III; General Chemistry I, II, III; Ecology; Earth System Science. Math: Calculus I, II and III. Physics: University Physics I, II, III and Calculus I, II and III.
