Speakers biographies Nicholas Makin Nicholas Makin BEd TTC MIITD MCIM is a former Training Director with one of the "Big Five" Irish law firms. Specialising in practice management issues, Nicholas has acted as a consultant to a number of law firms both within Ireland and internationally. Nicholas brings a practical approach to his seminars, which most participants find engaging and useful. Maureen Daly Maureen Daly is Partner and Head of the Technology And Brands Unit at Beauchamps. She advises on all aspects of intellectual property ( IP ) and technology matters (both contentious and non-contentious) including the protection, defence, enforcement and exploitation of IP rights; the seizure of counterfeit goods; domain name disputes; IP and technology due diligences; website privacy statements and terms & conditions; end-user agreements; software licence agreements; software/website development agreements; support and maintenance agreements; biotechnology collaborations/research agreements as well as joint ventures between academic and commercial organisations; advising on compliance with consumer protection and data protection legislation. Maureen has lectured extensively on technology and intellectual property issues. She is the author of numerous articles as well as being the Irish contributor to a book on Character Merchandising in Europe (published by Kluwer Law International). She is also a contributor to books entitled Technology and IP Law (published by Tottel Publishing) and Data Protection Laws of the World (published by Sweet & Maxwell). Maureen has an honours science degree in Biochemistry (University College Dublin). In addition to being a solicitor, Maureen is also an Irish registered Trade Mark Attorney and Community Trade Mark Attorney. Maureen is a committee member of the Irish section of the Licensing Executives Society as well as the Technology Committee of the International Bar Association. Maureen is also a member of the Association of Patent and Trade Mark Attorneys, the International Trade Mark Association, Marques and ITechLaw.Maureen is a member of the IP Law Committee of the Law Society of Ireland. She is also an officer of the Technology Law Committee of the International Bar Association and is Chair of its User Generated Content subcommittee. She has been recommended for her work by independent international commentators and guides such as Who swholegal, European Legal 500, Practical Law Company Which Lawyer?, Chambers Europe, Managing Intellectual Property Handbook and Best Lawyers. Gerard Kelly Gerard is a Partner in Mason Hayes & Currann Commercial Litigation Department, practising mainly in the area of intellectual property law. He advises clients on intellectual property disputes, including substantial passing off, trade mark, copyright, design right and patent litigation. He has been involved in some of the most high profile IP

litigation cases in recent years in the Irish Commercial Court and the Supreme Court, including many of the most recent preliminary injunction applications. Gerard is a registered trade mark agent in Ireland and a European Trade Mark and Design Attorney. He also has particular experience in non-contentious IP matters such as advising on protection and licensing strategies for intellectual property rights. Gerard previously practised in another leading Irish law firm with their intellectual property group. Carol Plunkett Carol is a highly respected commercial litigator, with particular expertise in intellectual property disputes. She also acts for a number of State Regulators, advising on regulatory disputes. Recent significant cases include advising: Pfizer in the Irish proceedings relating to the worldwide dispute regarding Lipitor, the largest selling drug in the world Enercon (Aloys Wobben), the worldwide leading wind energy company, in a patent infringement case The Commission for Aviation Regulation in relation to claims by Ryanair relating to airport charges The Commission for Communications Regulation in relation to statutory appeal and enforcement proceedings by eircom Carol is a consultant to the Law Society School of Education, a member of its standing Curriculum Development Committee and lectures widely on intellectual property and regulatory law. According to Chambers Europe, 2013, Carol Plunkett is widely acclaimed as 'just brilliant. She has fantastic expertise in both intellectual property and commercial litigation...she is regarded as 'a lawyer with a longstanding reputation as one of the best.' Legal 500 EMEA, 2013, hails Carol as 'a star of the Irish IP fraternity'. Sources of Chambers Europe, 2012, universally regard Carol as 'one of the finest IP litigators on the market'. Legal 500 EMEA, 2010 lauds Carol as a 'go-to-lawyer for IP work because her relaxed approach sets her apart; she secures results in a seemingly stress-free way, and praises her for being 'very experienced and calm. ' Rob Corbet Rob s practice is focused on technological innovation and, in particular, the protection and commercialisation of intellectual property. He is ranked as a leading individual in Ireland for both his Information TEchnology and Intellectual Property practices by The Legal 500: EMEA. Rob has presented internationally at conferences on ebusiness, data protection, betting and gaming and IP law. He provides the expert commentary for the Data Protection Ireland journal, he is a founding member of the Internet Growth Alliance and he is Co-Chair of the ABA International Committee on Privacy E-Commerce and Data Security. Rob is co-author of Technology and IP Law, (2008, Tottel Publishing/Law Society of Ireland), Business Law, (5th Edition, 2012, Oxford/Law Society of Ireland) and the International Privacy Guide Irish Chapter (2009, West). He is the Co-Chair of the Cloud Computing and Virtualisation Committee of the American Bar Association International Law Section (ABA International). Rob is also member of the firm s Asia-Pacific Group.

Robert McDonagh Robert is a Partner in the Commercial Department of Mason Hayes and Curran. He advises on all forms of commercial contracts, and has particular experience advising on large ICT and outsourcing transactions. Robert also works closely with public and private sector clients in devising their data protection strategies and compliance programmes. He advises a number of leading online trading, gaming and social media companies. Robert has a focused regulatory practice, particularly in the area of public procurement. He is the head of our public procurement practice and advises on all forms of ICT, Construction, Energy and other projects as well as public procurement disputes. Pearse Ryan Pearse qualified with a large Dublin firm and subsequently worked in their corporate department. Pearse then spent a year and a half in the corporate department of Nutter McClennan & Fish, a large US firm in Boston (like Arthur Cox, Nutter McClennan & Fish is a member of the international group of law firms known as the TechLaw Group). Subsequently, Pearse completed his LLM in IT & IP in London, following which he spent four years in the UK with the legal department of Northgate Information Solutions plc, an IT solution supplier. Pearse joined the Technology Department of Arthur Cox in late 1999. Pearse specialises in the areas of information technology (including IT disputes), sourcing, outsourcing, computer security/fraud, e-commerce and intellectual property (with an emphasis on IT related matters). Pearse works mainly in the technology and life science sectors, specialising in sourcing, outsourcing and project work. Pearse acts for mainly customers in the public sector and for both customers and suppliers in the private sector. Much of Pearse s practice is in the area of structuring procurements and projects, including re-structuring, as well as dealing with legal and contractual matters. This requires a strong commercial and technical skill set. The scope of work extend from project initiation through procurement and contract negotiation, to project implementation and contract management/dispute resolution services Jeanne Kelly Jeanne is a partner in the Commercial Department of Mason Hayes & Curran. Jeanne studied law at University College Dublin and at the Université de Haute Normandie, Rouen, France.
