In recognition of the important support role they play, the Law Society of Singapore and Temasek Polytechnic have jointly developed a foundational certification course on various aspects of Procedural and Substantive Law, Legal Communication Skills and Practice Management specifically designed for these stakeholders. Each aspect of this Course, from its content to structure to duration, has been crafted based on the valuable feedback we have received from key users of paralegal services, including Managing Partners/Directors of law practices and Heads of Legal Departments. This ensures the unsurpassed quality and relevance of this Course. Each Module is conducted using a combination of lecturettes, case studies, exercises and concluding with a simple written test. Participants who attend each Module in full and pass the written test at the end of each Module will be awarded a joint Certificate of Completion for the Module by the Law Society of Singapore and Temasek Polytechnic. 2 3, 16 & 30 September 2015, 2.00pm-6.00pm (137 Cecil Steet, Level 3) MODULES Module 1 (3 September 2015) Basic Principles Of Drafting Pleadings In A Civil Action (Note: Limited to 40 places, to be conducted at 137 Cecil Street, Level 3) This topic will enable participants to have an overall view of pleadings and their respective purposes in a civil claim commenced by way of a Writ of Summons. It will cover: The nature and purpose of pleadings Essentials of well drafted pleadings How to draft a Statement of Claim cause of action, particulars, prayers How to draft a Defence implications of specific traverses and non-traverses Function and purpose of Counterclaims Appropriate situations to file a Reply. Module 2 (9 September 2015) Drafting Transactional Documents in Conveyancing Transactions (Note: Limited to 25 places, to be conducted at Temasek Polytechnic, School of Business, Blk 26 Level 1 Unit 15 : Lab 5 - Legal) This module aims to give a hands-on introduction to drafting relevant documents in conveyancing transactions. The documents include: Caveats Instrument of Transfer Instrument of Mortgage Option to Purchase (examining key terms)

3 3, 16 & 30 September 2015, 2.00pm-6.00pm (137 Cecil Steet, Level 3) Module 3 (16 September 2015) Effective Oral and Written Communication (Note: Limited to 40 places, to be conducted at 137 Cecil Street, Level 3) This module aims to provide participants with an overview of what communication in the legal context is and the factors that hamper effective communication in the legal context. It will also introduce participants to the skills necessary for reading in the legal context, and oral presentation skills. Skill/ Topic Understanding basic principles of oral and written communication in the legal context Introduction to skills for effective reading of various legal texts (including case reports) for general and specific information Introduction to skills for writing of various legal texts (including legal letters) Specific Learning Outcomes Define communication in the legal context. Identify factors that impede effective oral and written communication in the legal context. Identify the different purposes and readers of various legal texts. Sectionalise various legal texts into their different parts/components for more effective reading. Differentiate between skimming and scanning as essential reading tools. Read a legal text for its gist. Identify the different purposes and readers for writing various legal texts by paralegals. Use the various stages of the writing process (pre-writing, during writing and post-writing) to ensure good writing. Module 4 (30 September 2015) Basic Principles of Drafting Minutes and Resolution (Note: Limited to 40 places, to be conducted at 137 Cecil Street, Level 3) This module will equip participants with a basic understanding of: corporate secretarial functions in relation to drafting minutes and resolutions; legal principles relating to minutes and resolutions; & skills required in drafting minutes and resolutions Skill/ Topic Prepare the documents required for members and directors meetings Specific Learning Outcomes Identify the documents to be prepared for convening a members' and a directors' meeting. Distinguish between the matters deliberated by the Board of Directors and the members. Draft the documents required for convening a members' and a directors' meeting. Draft the resolutions and minutes of a meeting.

4 3, 16 & 30 September 2015, 2.00pm-6.00pm (137 Cecil Street, Level 3) Module 5 (7 October 2015) Basic Legal Research for Law Office Staff (Note: Limited to 25 places only, to be conducted at Temasek Polytechnic, School of Business, Blk 26 Level 1 Unit 15 : Lab 5 - Legal) This module aims to: provide participants with an overview of what legal research entails introduce participants to the various electronic and non- electronic based research tools introduce participants to the process of systematic legal research Skill/ Topic Understanding basic legal research Introduction to electronic and nonelectronic based research tools Introduction to the process of systematic legal research Specific Learning Outcomes To understand what legal research entails To differentiate primary and secondary sources of legal materials To understand what blind research entails To identify effective search words and phrases To use indexes, digests and other research tools to locate legislation and cases To use LAWNET/LexisNexis to locate legislation and cases To identify attitudes required for legal research To identify preparations necessary before doing legal research To assess the credibility of sources To use case law in opinions and briefs

5 3, 16 & 30 September 2015, 2.00pm-6.00pm (137 Cecil Street, Level 3) PROFILE OF TRAINERS Andrew Chia (Module 1) Basic Principles of Drafting Pleadings in Civil Action Senior Lecturer at Temasek Polytechnic, Andrew spent 12 years in industry practicing law before joining the Polytechnic. During the time in practice, Andrew handled a wide range of legal work with the main focus on civil litigation. Andrew graduated with an LL.B from University of Singapore in 1978 and subsequently obtained his MSc (Criminal Justice) from the University of Leicester in His area of interest includes litigation, arbitration and criminology. Cynthia Rodrigo (Module 2) Drafting Transactional Documents in Conveyancing Transactions Cynthia is an Advocate and Solicitor who was in private practice for more than 15 years. During that time she practiced in law firms specializing in Conveyance, Litigation and Intellectual Property. Cynthia also worked as a legal counsel in both the public and private sector. In the private sector, she worked in a bank and a listed property company handling mainly Banking, Corporate and Corporate Finance work. Her favourite areas of law include Conveyancing, Family Law and Conflicts of Law. Benjamin Ang (Module 3) - Effective Oral & Written Communication Benjamin Ang started his career as a litigation lawyer, but after his MBA and Masters in Management Information Systems, he took on the roles of Director of Technology and later Executive Director of a large Singapore law firm. He then went on to become Administrative Director in a US law firm based in Singapore, before returning to legal practice as a corporate lawyer. Subsequently he became Director Asia in an international legal technology consulting firm, and then General Manager / Legal Counsel in an international media and publishing company. Throughout this time, he has continued to publish articles and speak at regional conferences on law and technology. Pang Kin Woon (Module 4) - Basic Principles of Drafting Minutes & Resolutions Kin Woon graduated from the National University of Singapore with a Bachelor of Laws degree. After being called to the Singapore bar, he started his legal career as a corporate lawyer practising mainly in the area of Corporate Finance. He subsequently joined a listed local company as in house legal counsel and was involved in mergers and acquisitions (M&A) and joint venture work, as well as operational aspects of the business. He later joined a European MNC where he was involved in regional legal work and was eventually appointed as General Counsel, ASEAN. At Temasek Polytechnic, Kin Woon teaches Corporate Law subjects. Moses J Danial (Module 5) Basic Legal Research for Law Office Staff Moses J Danial holds an LL.B(Hons) from the University of London and an LL.M from the National University of Singapore. Before joining Temasek Business School in 2009, he was at the Ministry of Manpower (Legal Services Department) as a Prosecutor. He teaches criminal procedures & evidence, criminal law, commercial law, contract law and law of tort, with a focus on adult learners.

Registration closes on 24 August 2015 (Monday), or once the seats are filled up. The registration fee is due and payable upon registration and must be received prior to the event. Registration will only be confirmed upon receipt of full payment. The Law Society reserves the right to refuse to register or admit any participant, and to cancel or postpone the course or seminar. If you are unable to attend, a substitute delegate is welcomed, provided that the Law Society is notified in writing of the name and particulars of the substitute delegate at least 3 working days before the course or seminar. The Law Society reserves the right to impose a cancellation fee of 15% of the course fee in the event any registrant wishes to cancel his registration or withdraw from the course or seminar after the registration closing date. No refund of registration fees will be made for cancellation or withdrawal made less than 5 working days before the date of the course or seminar. However, a confirmed registrant who has fully paid the course or seminar fees but who does not turn up will be entitled upon reasonable request to collect a set of the materials provided.
