Nevada High School Musical Theater Awards Overview - 2016 The Smith Center for the Performing Arts is pleased to invite high schools throughout Nevada to participate in the Nevada High School Musical Theater Awards, a regional program of the National High School Musical Theatre Awards (NHSMTA). The Nevada High School Musical Theater Awards is a celebration of outstanding student achievement in high school musical theater showcasing talent in vocal, dance and acting performances. DEADLINES Applications Due Wednesday, April 27, 2016 Applicants Notified Week of May 2, 2016 Nevada HSMTA May 28 and 29, 2016 National HSMTA - NY June 22-June 28, 2016 - NY June 27, 2016 Eligibility: Participating schools may nominate one student per category (Best Performance by an Actor and Best Performance by an Actress) for the lead role performed in the eligible high school musical production occurring between September 1, 2015 and May 21, 2016. Participating schools are encouraged to nominate a student for each category. Nominees must be enrolled in grades 9-12 in a public, charter or private school throughout Nevada. A nominee must have played the lead role in an eligible full-length high school musical theater production, performed on the school campus. A supporting role does not qualify. The leading role must be from the qualifying roles as listed at www.nhsmta.com. All nominees must submit a five-minute video of their leading role performance or rehearsal along with an application. Application packets will be reviewed and students will be notified of their status to participate in the Nevada High School Musical Theater Awards. If selected, nominees must be willing and available to participate in both the Nevada High School Musical Theater Awards at The Smith Center on May 28 and 29, 2016 and the National High School Musical Theatre Awards program held in New York City June 22-June 28, 2016. Application Checklist - Nevada High School Musical Theater Awards 2015-2016 Each and all of the following items must be submitted for the Best Actor and Best Actress Nomination from a participating school by April 27 Deadline The Participant Information form A recent headshot (300 dpi or higher) of nominated student A program of the school production for which the student is nominated Individual sheet music : Note: The music must be piano vocal sheet music in the key in which it is being performed. If there are cuts, the sheet music must be clearly marked. Instrumental recordings of *** A letter of recommendation student for participation in the Nevada High School Musical Theater Awards A DVD recording, up to five minutes long, of the student performing the role for which they are nominated: The DVD recording must include the student performing one ballad and one up-tempo number from the production The video must be a rec their performance during the eligible calendar year ***Instrumental Recording Details The instrumental recordings being submitted must adhere to the following criteria: File must be in MP3, MP4,.WAV, or.aiff format The track must be submitted in the key in which it is to be performed by the nominee Tracks may be recorded by the nominee (recording your school accompaniment, solo piano accompaniment, etc.) or can be purchased online through various online databases such as http://store1.musicalcreations.com/. Music releases or performance rights do not need to be purchased. Accompaniment should be at least 1 minute 30 seconds in length and may not be longer than 4 minutes 30 seconds The track cannot include any background vocals If your school production occurs after April 27, 2016 The nominated student must provide the participant application form, a headshot, individual sheet music, instrumental recordings and the letter of recommendation by April 27. The nominated student must submit a placeholder DVD showing him/her singing one up-tempo number and one ballad from the show for which they are nominated by April 27. Immediately following, the student must provide a DVD recording up to five minutes long, of the student performing the role for which they are nominated: o The DVD recording must include the student performing one ballad and one up-tempo number from the production o proof of their performance during the eligible calendar year o Additionally, the student must provide a program of the school production for which the student is nominated o The student must provide the DVD and program on or before May 23 No extensions or exceptions Page 2 of 7

Nevada High School Musical Theater Awards Rules and Regulations 2015-2016 The Smith Center for the Performing Arts is presenting the Nevada High School Musical Theater Awards to enable Nevada schools to participate in the National High School Musical Theatre Awards, a national celebration of outstanding student achievement in high school musical theater. Categories: Best Performance by an Actor Best Performance by an Actress Eligibility: Nominees must be enrolled in grades 9-12 in a public, charter or private school throughout Nevada. A nominee must have played the lead role in an eligible full-length high school musical theater production, performed on the school campus, during the 2015-2016 school-year. A supporting role does not qualify. The leading role must be from the eligible roles as listed at www.nhsmta.com. Nominees must be willing and available to participate in both the Nevada High School Musical Theater Awards at The Smith Center May 28 and 29, 2016, and the National High School Musical Theatre Awards program to be held in New York City, June 22-June 28, 2016. Each school must secure all rights to perform the selected show and may be subject to verification by The Smith Center staff. Schools will be asked to acknowledge their participation in the Nevada High School Musical Theater oduction. Language and logo will be provided by The Smith Center. Best Performance by Actor/Actress nominees will perform one solo from the lead role he/she played in the musical for which they have been nominated during the 2015-2016 school-year. The Nevada High School Musical Theater Awards May 29 will be produced by The Smith Center. Lighting and sound decisions are at the discretion of The Smith Center producer. Nominee performance at the May 29 event should be appropriate for all ages. The Smith Center reserves the right to cut any material that is determined by producers to be inappropriate. The primary contact is responsible for communicating any changes from their original application (e.g. understudies, hired professionals) to The Smith Center staff prior to judging. Eligibility is at the discretion of The Smith Center, which reserves the right to amend rules as necessary to maintain a fair process. Failure to attend rehearsal on May 28 will result in ineligibility to perform in the May 29 event. Applications: All applications must be completed in accordance with these rules and regulations. Application packets will be reviewed and students will be notified of their status to participate in the Nevada High School Musical Theater Awards. Failure to submit documents by specified deadlines will result in ineligibility to perform in the audition awards event. Page 6 of 7

Nevada High School Musical Theater Awards Judging Guidelines: Starting on Saturday, nominees will be evaluated through an audition process that includes participation in an ensemble number with all nominees and one solo from the lead role he/she played in the musical for which they have been nominated. NO substitutions will be considered eligible. Participants must provide their own clearly-marked sheet music. All nominees must be prepared. Singing a cappella is not allowed. Two students (one actor and one actress) will be selected as the winners by a panel of judges during the May 29 event at The Smith Center. The judges will also select a runner-up in each of the two categories. Should one of the winners be unable to participate in the national competition, a runner-up will be sent in their place. Expectation of the winners from the Nevada High School Musical Theater Awards The winning student must be willing and available to participate in the National High School Musical Theatre Awards Jimmy Awards program held in New York City from Wednesday, June 22 through Tuesday, June 28, 2016. Winners are required to bring the costume and any accessories or props from their winning roles. The two winners (one male, one female) will travel to New York City with a chaperone representing The Smith Center. Air transportation, meals, and housing in New York City will be provided for the week of the program. Additional release forms for the trip and for the National High School Musical Theatre Awards program must be signed by the student and a parent/guardian. The National High School Musical Theatre Awards includes one-on-one coaching, auditions, and rehearsal for the Winners of the Nevada High School Musical Theater Awards must submit to The Smith Center Education Department the following items by Friday, June 3: Best Actor/Actress Nominee Topic Response Video (no longer than five minutes, topics are provided) Music Submission - Nominees must submit title information and copies of the sheet music for four (4) prepared pieces. The four prepared pieces are: o o One (1) musical theater ballad and one (1) musical theater up-tempo piece. Both of these submissions length and presentation.
