02 Manuale Istruzioni G.N. UTEC B098N.M01.EN 2/10 05/2015 1 Introduction The travelling beam device is used to check any irregularity in both bituminous and concrete road surfaces. It is a detection unit comprising a wheel connected to an indicator. The surface deviation is shown on a scale calibrated in increments of 2 mm up to 10 mm and 5 mm up to 25 mm. The device is supplied as three sub-assemblies, which are quickly assembled on site. The device can be equipped with: WOODEN CARRYING CASE TO HOUSE AND CARRY THE DEVICE DYE-MARKER RECORDING DEVICE 2 Operation A handle is connected to the two rear wheels. It allows the operator to push the device over the area to be monitored. The operator can easily recognize the indications of irregularity. To improve maneuverability and not to stress the mechanism, the central detection wheel can be lifted when no test is executed. LAYOUT + DIMENSIONS Weight (Kg): ~ 55 Dimensions (mm): 3000x800x 1000

02 Manuale Istruzioni G.N. UTEC B098N.M01.EN 5/10 05/2015 5 Calibration The device is calibrated in the factory. Calibration is performed by aligning on a straight line the lowest points of the two slide wheels with the detection wheel. Doing this, the index corresponds to the zero position of the scale. The calibration can be performed by positioning the beam on suitable supports, by pulling a thin thread from one end of the beam to another and keeping it tangent to the lower part of the wheels. Doing so, the central wheel is tangent to the thread and the index is set on the 0 position by tightening and loosening the appropriate beams. 6 Notes on the device The travelling beam device is a rigid beam F RIGID WHEELS AT THE complete with a wheel of detection placed in EXTREMITIES the middle of the fixed wheelbase of the two G DETECTION WHEEL sliding wheels at the ends of the device. L HANDLE The wheel detection is able to vertically move up and down. The index shows on the graduated scale the size of the movement. NB: The travelling beam device can only indicate deviations from a straight line of a point perfectly halfway between the two sliding wheels. For this reason, it is necessary to interpret the collected data following the example below: 5
02 Manuale Istruzioni G.N. UTEC B098N.M01.EN 6/10 05/2015 6.1 Example of operation and interpretation of the evaluation The device slides over an ideally flat surface. The index connected to the detection wheel remains on zero position with no variations. UNREAL HOLLOW The front wheel rises above a bump with height H. In this situation, the indicator falls below the zero position reaching a value -H/2 at a distance of P/2 from the bump. BUMP After travelling the device for a distance of P/2, the detection wheel goes up the bump. The indicator shows a positive value equal to +H. UNREAL HOLLOW After travelling the device for a further distance of P/2, the rear wheel goes up the bump. The indicator will show a negative value equal to -H/2 After moving the device by a sufficient distance to return to the flat surface, the indicator will show again a zero value. 6.2 note If the device meets hollows instead of bumps, the a/m reasoning and results will be applied inversely. 6

02 Manuale Istruzioni G.N. UTEC B098N.M01.EN 8/10 05/2015 RECORDING DEVICE When connected to the Travelling Beam Device, it provides a permanent record of the surface profile drawing a line with a pen on the chart paper roll. It records up to 1000 meters surface on the special chart paper rolls. Supplied complete with chart rolls and fibre-tipped pens. HOW TO ASSEMBLE THE RECORDING DEVICE Remove, by unscrewing the relative screws, the top cover placed in the upper area "P" and the front cover in the "R" position. The top cover will no longer be used. Screw the recording device through the 4 screws K. 8

02 Manuale Istruzioni G.N. UTEC B098N.M01.EN 10/10 05/2015 HOW TO EQUIP PAPER ROLLS + FIBRE-TIPPED PEN Unscrew and remove both fixing tops of rolls. Assemble the new paper roll on the main roll. Run the paper through the front part of the recording area and secure it with adhesive tape to the roller. Reassemble and tighten the tops of the rollers. Insert the fibre-tipped pen KK in the specific holder. 10
