Frequently Asked Questions Why Gymnastics? Although it is often seen at Olympic level and viewed as high risk, in its basic form the building blocks of gymnastics are fundamental movement skills, teaching children how to jump, hop, skip, run, roll, swing, throw, catch and land safely, amongst many others. All the vital skills children need to learn in order to participate in any sport. A number of elite athletes competing in various sports, started with gymnastics and many sporting organisations are seeing the benefits of what gymnastics activities can offer to their sport. To find out more information please visit the 'Why Gymnastics' section on the Gymnastics Queensland website. So what's so good about the LaunchPad initiative? The LaunchPad initiative is designed to equip Aussie kids with the fundamental movement skills required in all types of physical activity and hopefully to lead a happy, healthy life. By participating in a LaunchPad program children will develop their fundamental movement skills, strength and fitness all while having a great time. Furthermore, LaunchPad programs are not just a work out for kid s bodies, but also for their brains, with activities designed to benefit learning, concentration and brain development. LaunchPad also helps develops children's social skills through team work and cooperation. Does LaunchPad fit/link with the syllabus? LaunchPad has been designed to fit with the current State based primary school syllabuses. LaunchPad aims to offer teachers the opportunity to align lessons to their state curriculum objectives. With the introduction of the national curriculum, Gymnastics Australia will link LaunchPad lessons to specific curriculum learning outcomes explicitly in due course. Is it worth attending if I am a high school teacher? Although the LaunchPad initiative is focused on the 0-12 year old age group, this course will provide all teachers with the knowledge of the basic building blocks of gymnastics and overall movement. There will be lots of useful activities that can be incorporated and adapted into school programs in order to teach the basics, for students to master before progressing to more complex skills. By completing this course, this will enable teachers to progress into the intermediate coaching course (please see certification process section and the coaching framework diagram above), as part of the Gymnastics Australia coaching framework, in order to gain more technical knowledge. For further information please contact Gymnastics Queensland on 07 3036 5600.
