6 INVESTMENT IN HEALTH SPONSOR: Public Health Agency The Public Health Agency (PHA) was established in 2009 with the overall aim of protecting and improving the health and wellbeing of the population and to reduce health inequalities in Northern Ireland. Workplaces represent an important setting that provide not just employment for an individual but one which can also encourage motivation, satisfaction, a sense of pride, purpose and identity, ultimately affecting an individual s health and wellbeing and their quality of life. With the latest figures from the CBI showing that a staggering 172 million working days are lost every year across the UK to sickness absence, costing businesses around 13bn annually, there is good reason to focus on encouraging employers to create a healthy workforce.
