About Smart and Skilled Smart and Skilled is a reform of the NSW Vocational Education and Training (VET) system. It's helping people in NSW get the skills they need to find a job and advance their careers. From 1 January 2015, Smart and Skilled provides eligible students with an entitlement to government-subsidised training up to and including Certificate III. Below is the course information Course description The Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care prepares students for the role of educator in a range of early childhood education settings, operating under the national and state legislative guidelines and regulations provided for education and care services. Educators support the implementation of an approved learning framework to facilitate children s wellbeing, learning and development. The Certificate III in Early Childhood Education & Care is a nationally recognised qualification from the Community Services Training Package. It is for those who wish to commence a career in the early childhood sector and those already working within the sector who wish to gain qualifications in the field. Employment opportunities for those attaining Certificate III in Early Education & Care include Child Care Educator, Family Day Care Educator, Nanny or In Home Care Educator. Course delivery PEAK training offers this course via correspondence. It is also available in metropolitan and regional NSW in a classroom setting provided there are from 12-15 students wishing to complete the course via face-to-face classroom delivery in a given region. There are 18 units in the Certificate III program. Students are provided with a timetable to follow with due dates to submit their assessments. The course fee covers completion of the course in up to 12 months. An extension (up to 6 months) can be requested but additional fees apply. Students will be issued with a nationally recognised Certificate III in Early Childhood Education & Care (CHC30113) upon successful completion of their course. CLUSTER 1 LEGAL AND ETHICAL COURSE STRUCTURE Units of competency for the CHC30113 Certificate III in Early Childhood Education & Care This cluster of 4 units ensures that methods are current and appropriate under the Regulation and Quality Assurance systems, as well as providing sensitive and appropriate care for young children. CHCCS400C Work within a relevant legal and ethical framework CHCPRT001 Identify and respond to children and young people at risk HLTWHS001 Participate in work health and safety CHCECE014 Comply with family day care administration requirements CLUSTER 2 HEALTH AND CARING This cluster of 5 units explores relationships with young children from birth to five years old and their families as well as methods of providing care that will enhance the growth of young children. CHCECE002 Ensure the health and safety of children CHCECE004 Promote and provide healthy food and drink CHCECE005 Provide care for babies and toddlers CHCECE003 Provide care for children HLTAID004 Provide an emergency first aid response in an education and care setting (completed at another registered training provider - please see below) PRACTICUM 1 1 week work placement (total of 40 hours) Please note: Students must attain competency in cluster 1 & 2 written assessments prior to commencing Practicum 1. The students will be required to complete a practicum workbook during their placement, which comprises of the final practical assessment for each unit in Clusters 1 & 2. successful completion of all practicum requirements. Once competency is attained in Cluster 1 and 2 students can progress to Cluster 3. CLUSTER 3 LEARNING & DEVELOPMENT This cluster of 4 units concentrates on the educators being able to act on information received or observed and explores development and play. CLUSTER 4 CHCECE009 Use an approved learning framework to guide practice CHCECE010 Support the holistic development of children in early childhood CHCECE011 Provide experience to support children s play and learning CHCECE013 Use information about children to inform practice SUPPORTING CHILDRENS RELATIONSHIPS This cluster of 2 units is essential in developing respectful relationships with children. CHCECE007 Develop positive and respectful relationships with children CHCECE013 Support children to connect to their world CLUSTER 5 STRENGTHENING CULTURAL RELATIONSHIPS This cluster of 3 units focuses on building strong relationships with co-workers and families from diverse backgrounds. CHCECE001 Develop cultural competence HLTHIR404D Work effectively with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people HLTHIR403C Work effectively with culturally diverse clients and co-workers PRACTICUM 2 2 week work placement (total of 80 hours) Please note: Students must attain competency in Clusters 3, 4 and 5 written assessments prior to commencing Practicum 2. The students will be required to complete a practicum workbook during their placement, which comprises of the final practical assessment for each unit in Clusters 3, 4 and 5. Competency in each unit is attained after successful completion of all practicum requirements. Once competency is attained in Clusters 3, 4 and 5 students will have completed the qualification. First Aid Qualification As part of Cluster 2, all students are required to provide proof of attainment in HLTAID004 - Provide an emergency first aid response in education and care settings. this unit therefore students must obtain the qualification externally and at their own cost. Students provide a certified copy of the Statement of Attainment accompanied by a Credit Transfer form to PEAK Training to arrange Credit Transfer. Practicum requirements Students must complete a total of 120 hours practicum in two blocks under the supervision of a regulated education and care service that caters for the full age range 0-5 years. In each practicum, students must apply the knowledge and skills required to achieve competency in a practical and meaningful manner with babies, toddlers and preschool aged children. Each student is responsible for arranging their own Practicum placements in collaboration with PEAK Training. Official written confirmation of practicum placement details from the regulated education and care service and the PEAK Practicum form completed and signed by the student must be received by PEAK Training 2 weeks prior commencing practicum. 1. The following student fee exists over the 12 month delivery of course: Payment on Enrolment Payment on 3rd Cluster Payment on 5th Cluster Total Subsidised Training Fee $650 $550.00 $390.00 $1,590.00 ** Please note: Individual payments must be paid before continuing to the new cluster If an extension is required, students will need to negotiate this directly with Student Support staff at PEAK Training. Recognised Prior Learning (RPL) and Credit Transfer (CT) Recognised Prior Learning (RPL) is for applicants who can provide detailed evidence to show that they have demonstrated the competencies for one or more units in this course. The scheduled cost for RPL assessment of each Unit of Competency will be equivalent to the cost of the CHC30113 Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care. PEAK Training follows guidelines for CHC30113 Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care; RPL Assessment as outlined by the Australian Government Department of Education and Training (DEEWR, 2013) and Mapping of Units of Competency as outlined by Community Services and Health Industry Skills Council (2014). Deferring and Discontinuing Training Applications for deferment/discontinuing are accepted at the discretion of PEAK Training. If student wish to defer or discontinue your subsidised training under Smart and Skilled, student is required to fill out appropriated form and must be approved by PEAK Training. Deferral may only be granted no more than 12 months from the date of receipt of notice from student. Deferred student must recommence before deferral expires otherwise student will be withdrawn from the course. Discontinuance will only take affect from the end date which student indicates on the approved form. Student then will be issued with a Statement of Attainment and associated transcript for completed Units of Competency achieved within 21 days of notification of the discontinuance. Resources Each student will be given the relevant text book for this qualification to keep, and a password to access our online learning platform ( Moodle ) for additional resources. Moodle resources consist of a different range of current resources, templates, videos and work samples to help students complete each unit. Students must have access to the internet with current Adobe software, to access the PEAK Moodle online learning platform. Support available to students PEAK Training has a Student Support team available Mondays to Fridays (8.30 am 4.00 pm) to assist students with any of their assessments and/or questions relating to the course. PEAK utilises qualified Trainers and Assessors with current industry knowledge and experience to help students attain their chosen qualification.
