Content Fifth Meeting Towards Establishment of the Turkish Arctic & Antarctic Research Program (TuArk) Aims TuArk Activities Activities of the METU IMS

Aims of the meeting To keep momentum on establishing the Polar Initiative To expand the Arctic & Antarctic network in Turkey Transfer of knowledge Discussion on legal issues regarding polar regions To approve Turkish Arctic & Antarctic Research Program (TUARK) Involvement of stakeholders. Identifying initial activities for polar research Funding opportunities

Why Antarctica Antarctica and the surrounding ocean are presently dedicated to science and peace Antarctica is an exemplar of outstanding international cooperation and environmental protection Antarctica is a continent and its surrounding oceans of significant resources The future of continent is agreed internationally through the Antarctic Treaty Turkey does not have a voice on the future of the continent To achieve the voice in the future of the continent it is an essential condition to have a long term, high quality Antarctic research programme Antarctica is changing rapidly in climate and politically (Rodger, 2014)

Turkey science contribution Turkey is very well placed to contribute novel international quality science in a number of science areas including:- Geology and geophysics Biological, chemical and physical oceanography Climate change Medical science Other key dimensions that science in Antarctica will offer: Capacity building for scientists, engineers and technologists Public outreach of science and technology

Benefits to Turkey A full role in the future of Antarctica Use of natural resources Environmental protection Turkish scientists addressing key current issues affecting the future climate of our planet Development of new technology and access to other technology through collaboration To be a member of a vibrant international research community A raised diplomatic profile A raised international science profile Skills and experience to apply to other issues and areas Training of the next generation of scientists and engineers Antarctica is an excellent subject to engage the public in science and the other values Antarctica represents (Rodger, 2014)
